Chapter 3

Lance returned that night, and found Red soaking in the tub. He frowned.

“Is something wrong? You seem subdued.”

Red sighed. “Lance, a knight came today.”

“Oh.” He twitched his tail. “Did he do anything to you?”

“He tried.” She said bitterly. “Even with my kingdom gone, it doesn’t matter! They just want my land…”

            Lance licked her face.

“You’re my only friend…” Red sighed.

What sort of crazy person was she? Was it truly worth nothing?

Lance purred as he wound his body around her, licking up her tears. “I’ll protect you.” He promised.

Red considered. Yes, she would like that… she shivered as she leaned against his cold scales.

Lance would protect her. She was his princess, after all.

The dragon growled softly, sensing the change of heart in the Princess. So be it. He would take good care of his Princess from now on, and never, ever leave her….

She lost count of the knights who died in agony, blood and gore streaking pristine white. She lost count of the men who blundered in, caught by traps and taken apart.

            She no longer cared.

If being cold were the only way to escape from men’s grasping desires, she would do so. She would never leave now.

What cared she for her kingdom? The kingdom was a trap baited and set, and any Prince who wanted it could claim it. She refused to rule, because it was not her duty, never her duty.

Her duty had only been to marry.

Well now, she needed not even to do that. She was safe here.  Besides, Lance was better company than tittering maids or glamorous princes…

Lance purred as she brushed his scales. He was such a pretty dragon.

“Do you miss having other people around?” He asked.

Red shook her head. “Not one iota. Perhaps I should, but I cannot. They are…”

            “Worthless?”

“Well yes – I mean no! Human company is not always pleasant...”

“I killed all the ones who came here. Do you cry for them?”

            “No.”

“Then do not worry. You do not need to miss them.”

            “All right…”

            Red sighed.

            “Is something else wrong?”

“No I’m just wondering why you are here.”

Lance blinked as he stretched. Red ran a hand down his smooth scales with a smile. Lance was so cute.

Now if only he were a prince, then she could get married and everything would be perfect.

The light show blinded her for a second, and then Red blinked. “My wish came true?”

            “Apparently.” Lance said dryly.

            “… But how?”

“… I’m only half-dragon.” Lance yawned, showing sharp teeth. “I turn into a human at night.”

“So that’s why I always fall asleep when the sun goes down.”

            He nodded.

“I don’t blame you.” Red shrugged. “It does make me wonder a little, but… are you under a curse?”

“No. I’m just the product of a dragon-human union.”

“… Interesting…” Red nodded. “So you don’t mind if I stay here with you?”

“Of course not. You’re pleasant enough, for a human.” Lance smirked. “And you are quite pretty.”

Red laughed, and hugged Lance tightly. “That’s all that needs to be said?”

            “Mm.”

It wasn’t quite a love story, and it wasn’t very romantic, perhaps, but they were content and that was enough.

And they lived happily ever after.
