Title: Evergreen dawn

Chapter 1

The world in its best state is fresh and green and new… it is a safe place.

The world however, is not perfect.

            Nothing is.

The four looked at each other and sighed.

Fire. Water. Earth. Wind. They were the four guardians of the elements, and they kept the balance between the worlds…

“This cannot go on.” Lance said softly. Guardian of Wind, he received the news from all four corners of the earth without fail.

Misty frowned. Guardian of Fire, she was hot-tempered and volatile.

Ash shook his head. “Should we activate Chain Destruction then?” As Guardian of Water he was the most adaptable.

            The fourth remained silent.

            “Is there another way?”

            “Not that I know of.”

            “But what can we do?”

“Sitting here looking pretty is not an option.” Lance said firmly. “If this continues, the balance breaks, and our lives are forfeit.”

            So maybe he was selfish…

            Still, it made sense.

“We must find the Black Orb then.” The last member said quietly.

            “Zachary, are you sure?”

“Sure!” The boy cried. His Pikachu and Bellsprout nodded in agreement.

Lance sweatdropped. What had possessed the High Council to make _this_ idiot a guardian?

Ash nudged Lance slightly under the table. < What an idiot… >

            < I can’t believe he’s on our side. I’m worried. >

            < So am I… >

            The meeting was adjourned.

The Black Orb it is then…

Ash and Lance retreated to their room.

< How did it go? >

            “Not well, Psychu…” Ash sighed.

The electric/psychic mouse fixed a surprised expression on her master. < Why not? > Purple fur met their sight.

Spirita, the ice blue flying pony, also resided in Ash’s room, and so did all the eevelutions.

< We’re going after the Black Orb. >

Psychu sucked in a breath. < Very dangerous! >

            < I know… >

< Is it our only hope? >

            < I’m afraid so… >

            < It’s not fair! >

            < Hmm? >
It was Vaporeon speaking, her eyes dilated with rage. < It’s not fair. >

< Life is never fair; guardians just have a slightly better chance than the average kid on the streets. >

< But how are we going to find the Orb? >

            < We’ll see… >

Lance closed his eyes, concentrating. <… Father? >

            Lugia responded. < Chosen? >

< Do you know of the Black Orb? >

He felt rather than heard the gasp of breath. < Why do you ask? >

< It is our last hope; father… the only other option is to wipe out humanity. >

Lugia’s anger sparkled along the link. < Then kill them! I am not sacrificing my child and Honou’s child to some legend of demons! >

            Ash frowned. < Lugia-san, why us? >

< Misty… Fire Guardian… she is in League with the users of the Black Orb. She has long been jealous of your skills. She will kill you and then claim the Black Orb as her reward. Oh yes, the balance will fall… >

            Ash gulped.

He knew that Lugia was part psychic and could see the future…

< Is that the only path for us? >

< Death is all you can look forwards to, children. >

< Very well. > Lance said respectfully. < Thank you, Father. >

            The communiqué ended.

            “I can’t believe they…”

< Why not? Zachary is a fool, and Misty could easily sway him to her side… >

Ash’s eyes widened at the implications.

< You are too innocent. > Lance scolded.

            < I never thought! >

< No, you didn’t. > Lance snapped, slightly, as he pinned Ash to the floor and kissed him, hard.

            < … Lance? >

He was dimly aware of blood rushing through his ears and the feeling of arousal flooding his body like a breaking wave.

< Maybe not… > Lance’s telepathy sounded in his mind thoughtfully. Ash blinked, before the door swung open.

“Lance – woah! Sorry! I did not see that!”

The door slammed shut as Zachary’s steps went running down the hall.

< He’ll be back in a few minutes. But we have to leave now, that act will only buy us so much time. >

Ash nodded, as he quickly threw his poke balls and magic equipment into his carrying bag, Lance doing the same, and then teleport warped them away.
