Chapter 2: Netted but not defeated

Ash landed on top of Furret, as Quilava fell on him. The three rolled down a long tunnel, before light finally peeked out.

Ash took a careful look around, and then sighed.

They were just in an empty room.

            “This was some great secret?”

            I don’t think that’s it. Quilava warned.

Furret looked alert. Danger! Danger comes!

Quilava spat out a Flame Wheel, just in time to hit a grand total of three different Unown pokemon.

“Yeek!” Ash said, catching them all with poke balls. It was lucky he had bought 27 at a discount despite the man’s odd looks.

            More unown attacked…

By the time Ash had finished, twenty-three poke balls lay next to him.

He quickly ran to the Center, after having collected the poke balls. Strangely enough, they weighed almost nothing and didn’t transfer.

            Ash shrugged it off.

            He still missed W, Y, and T.

Still… were these unowns good for anything?

The next day, Ash got his answer.

A wild Phanpy had KO’d Quilava and was attacking Furret when his poke balls glowed and Unown G came out.

With a strange humming noise, the Unown glowed and attached itself to Furret’s head.

Furret suddenly glowed, before attacking with…

            SURF?!

            Ash gaped.

The Unown looked immensely pleased with itself.

“Wow!” Ash said, as he threw a poke ball at the fainted phanpy.

The ball twitched before the female was captured.

Then, the H unown came and healed all of his pokemon.

Ash learned his lesson quickly. Never underestimate a pokemon.

But the unowns seemed to accept him.

            That was good.

Surprisingly, they were good conversationalists too.

As psychic pokemon, they began talking to him in telepathy. It was like a group of friends… or advisors.

            It would work.

            He trusted them.

They began to trust him too…

Trust is hard to earn, but Ash was no fake. Everything he did shone sincerity and that was important.

Fakery was not something to be tolerated by the ancient mystics.

Ash spent almost three months in the ruins, learning the ancient history and legends. The unown were happy to tell him.

            After all, they were lonely.

It would all work out for the best after all.

That was also when the bonding occurred.

Ash found himself glowing, eye color melting into a vibrant yellow, as the power poured into him.

The unown were melding their powers into him. A mass of psychic swirls prettily filled the air.

After all, they needed a focus.

So be it. he would be more than human and perform the will of the pokemon.

That was not a bad thing.

            They had Chosen him.

            Elsewhere…

            Golden eyes gleamed happily.

            < Not bad. >

< Quite an interesting approach, isn’t it Lugia? >

< I would not have expected, but he will certainly be more open to suggestion now. >

            < I understand. >

            < Patience, Chosen… >

            < I can wait. He’s still young. >

The two figures lapsed into silence.

Bugsy looked up, someone was in her gym.

            Interesting, the bugs weren’t attacking.

She walked outside with Scyther. “Hello?”

            “Hello.”

A boy wearing black clothing with purple bands on the sleeves stood there, with a Quilava next to him.

“You wanted to challenge me for my Hive Badge?”

            “Yes.”

“Let’s do it.” Bugsy took a fighting stance. “Scyther, go!”

Ash closed his eyes as Quilava attacked.

            Unown S was watching, anyways.

            Seek…

It would alert him to any danger.

Quilava finished off Scyther and the Metapod that followed, so Bugsy gave Ash the hive badge.

Still, she was a bit unnerved.

            Was he psychic?

            Maybe…

The unown had woven their powers into him. An invisible web of energy hummed over his body.

It was part of them and part of him, two in one.

            Was it the perfect combination?

            Maybe.

In any case, Ash enjoyed the power and companionship. He didn’t have that many pokemon yet, but he could work on it later.

After all, the bard and the legend owners followed him.
