Chapter 1

Lance crept through the bowels of Team Rocket’s research facility, still disguised as a grunt. He was surprised he had managed to get in this far, but they would be onto him any moment now…

“Halt! Let me see your identification!”

No choice. “Dragonite, go! Hyper beam!”

Everything within a twenty-foot radius went up in smoke. Lance climbed on Dragonite’s back as they flew off, the floppy disk with the information he had been seeking securely tucked in his jacket as they flew off.

From his vantage point in a tree, a Team Rocket sniper took careful aim, and fired…

Dragonite looked down as his Master suddenly fell, clutching his chest…

He dived down, hoping to catch him… but Lance never hit the ground. Instead, he vanished four feet off the ground. Dragonite immediately flew back to Indigo Plateau, where he knew he would be safe…

Lightning flashed across the dimensional multiverse as Serebii shuddered. This could not bode well…

            “Oh my…”

Delia Kitcham blinked, and blinked again. Yes, there was a young boy lying facedown in her front yard. “Um… excuse me?”

            There was no reply.

Delia frowned. She walked over and turned him over, before gasping.  Blood was trickling from a deep wound on his chest, staining his black clothing red and wet. She quickly called 9-1-1, there was no time to waste!

Lance slowly made his way towards consciousness. Where… was he?

This did not resemble Indigo Plateau. Shimatta! He must have been shot down! He struggled to get up, only to be silenced by a nurse’s screech.

“No, no! stay down, child! You’re still hurt!”

“Hurt?” Lance looked down. His chest was swathed in a violent riot of bandages. Yes… hurt… so it was true.

            “Yes, yes!”

            “Where are my belongings?”

“Oh, you mean your backpack? Right there.” Jill pointed. Honestly, kids these days! She had checked him for Identification, but all he had was a wallet with some money – no, there had been some weird ID card that said his name was ‘Lance Dragyn’ and his age set at 17, but he only looked twelve or so…

            It was probably fake.

            “Where am I?”

            “You’re in Pleasanton General Hospital.”

“… Pleasanton?” Lance raised an eyebrow. “I’ve never heard of the city. How far is it to Indigo Plateau.”

            “Indigo Plateau?”

“Yes, you know… the capital of Indigo Island and Kanto.”

            “No idea, kid.”

“I’m not a kid.” Lance said scornfully. “I’ve seventeen.” * Well, okay, even if I’m not, she won’t know! *

“Whatever… and I’m your nurse. So stay put. You need to stay here for a couple more days at least.”

“A few more days?! I don’t have that time! Team Rocket’s after me!”

“Did you hit your head too hard when you fell or what? There’s no such thing as Team Rocket.” Jill tsked. Kids these days…

Lance’s eyes narrowed. “I should report you for insubordination!”

            “To you? Ha!”

Lance made a mental note to call the Joy cloning facility and give the boss a few choice words. “You can’t keep me here.”

He shot off the bed, grabbed his backpack, and jumped out the window.

            “Hey!”

Jill ran to look, but saw neither hide nor hair of her former patient. What in the world-?

Aerodactyl landed them in a forest several miles away.

“Ptera, Hakuryuu, Gyarados, and Dragonair… all here.” Lance frowned. Dragonite was gone!

Well, at least four of his pokemon were present. Checking his ‘backpack’, he found a six-week’s supply of food for both human and pokemon, his collapsible tent and sleeping bag, a well-stocked first-aid kit, his dragon blades, some healing items, and… his wallet.

            Lance sighed.

            Master Lance?

“This is not good… I do not feel Dragonite’s energy anywhere. Do you?”

All four dragons concentrated, but had to shake their heads in denial.

Lance cursed. “This is just great.. and I can’t help the fact that I look like a child. If  we are truly elsewhere, they may – I may have to be adopted.”

            Oh no!

But for now, he would try to hide…

A week later, Delia was camping with her son Red. All was going well until Red went swimming by himself…

            “Help!”

Lance looked around, wondering  where the voice was coming from. He didn’t like leaving people to die unless they deserved it. It sounded like a child…

He ran through the forest quickly, and spotted a boy drowning. Without a thought, he kicked off his boots and cloak and jumped into the water. Taking a firm hold of the boy, he towed him to shore.

            Hmm… wasn’t breathing…

Sighing, Lance began giving CPR. After a few moments, the boy coughed up a lungful of water, and began breathing normally. Lance sighed in relief.

Red slowly made his way towards consciousness. “Um…”

            “You all right?”

He saw a boy next to him, dripping wet, long red hair hanging almost to his waist. Wow! That was long hair!

            “Y-yes…”

            “That’s good. What’s your name?”

            “Red Kitcham.”

“Nice to meet you, I’m Lance Dragyn.”

“RED!” Delia crashed through the bushes. “Oh honey, you’re all right! I was so worried!” She took notice of Lance’s state, before she hugged him.

“Thank you for saving my baby!”

Lance choked, unaccustomed to this degree of friendliness. “Er.. it was nothing, ma’am.”

            “Where’s your family?”

            “I-I don’t have one here…”

“Oh poor dear!” Now that she thought of it, he looked familiar – he was that kid she had spotted near death and sent to the hospital, and now he had saved her son’s life. Funny how things worked out.

Maybe he had run away from a foster home? She’d heard horror stories about those.

“You poor dear. I’ll adopt you and everything will be fine.”

“… All right.” Lance said, confused. However, this situation would work out… and the boy Red… for some reason, he felt familiar… hmmm… he’d wait and watch and see…
