Chapter 10

            Where would she go?

Red thought hard. Where could Lance go? He had notified the police, albeit unwillingly and in a fit of anger, who Catelyn really was. They had managed to trace her family tree.

Let’s see… father from Blackthorn. And her mother was from Viridian.

Both parents were deceased though, but if Lance’s birthplace were Blackthorn, would she go back there…?

            Red nodded.

            “Aeroy, let’s fly…”

The Aerodactyl soared into the sky, brown wings glinting as Red took off into the sky. He wouldn’t cry. He wouldn’t!

            She-she wasn’t worth it. Right?

Black smoke curled around her form, darkness and death and desire, a rhapsody of pain and hate…

Don’t you see anything? Your eyes are good, but you are blind now.

            I still love you.

But I will just hurt you if I stay with you. So I must leave, leave you alone… even though you will come to defeat me. And you will defeat me, since my power has mostly been expended to wreak this destruction and havoc upon the earth.

            Come and fight me.

            I’ll be waiting.

It is an honor to be killed by the one you love, after all…

“You will die.” He said simply. “Even if you’re my friend, I can’t let you live. You’ve caused so much destruction…”

He had watched Pallet burn with a sickening feeling as the dragons flew away.

            He knew she controlled them.

Strange, she didn’t look so frightening, not even as ‘Lance’, standing there with her arms crossed and black cape billowing in the wind…

Why wasn’t he afraid? Had he gone insane?

            Perhaps.

He just felt numb inside. She had been torn out of his heart and the gaping hole left had iced over completely.

He held out his poke ball. He’d gotten it back, stolen it in the middle of the night, but it was worth it.

This one had the power to destroy her.

            “Pika, use Megavolt.”

It had almost worked on Cerise. It would work now. She had no pokemon out, nor any protection – she wasn’t even trying to protect herself! How careless!

She laughed and then the lightning hit and he suddenly heard screams, horrible piercing screams, but…

They weren’t coming from her. No human could scream like that. They were too high, too shrill to be human!

He realized it was her pokemon with a sick feeling.

The dragons were *screaming*. Hakuryuu were supposed to have lovely singing voices, but they were screaming, all of them, from the Aerodactyls to the baby Dratini that were clustered around this place.

            So many dragons…

Accusing eyes fixed on him as the Dragon Master fell to the floor. The thump was very quiet, but he heard it in the silence that descended seconds before the actual event.

Had they known she was going to die?

The corpse was strangely quiet. It was dead after all, blackened and charred by the power of the electrical attack the Pikachu had unleashed.

Red walked over to it. He looked into golden eyes frozen in a look of pain. But no, there was something else…

And the truth descended on him in a wave of gibbering terror as the second realm guardian died and the third rose to duty.

            No. NO!

            < Murderer… > Destiny’s voice hissed in his mind. < Dirty murderer… trusted the rat more than her… >

Hope didn’t respond, but his disappointment could clearly be felt. As for the Master of Hidden Shadows, for Ashura…

The tirade was swift and brutal and merciless…

            I’m sorry….

Sorry isn’t enough, fool! You killed her!
            She broke my heart!
You didn’t even realize she loved you! You played the victim and she paid your price! Now are you satisfied? Won’t you ever learn?

            When will you ever learn?

The tears were hot against his cheeks and his hands shook as he buried her, but he could not resurrect the dead. He couldn’t!

            But oh, it hurt…

Isn’t this the reason why she deceives you? She does it to protect you, she spins her webs of deceit for you, and you don't realize it? You are truly a fool!

I killed the person who loved me. Even if there’s no blood on my hands, even if… oh that must have hurt, and yet she never cried.

She was so brave, even in the end…

            What have I done?

He wanted to die and let oblivion swallow him, but it was now his punishment to live, bearing his guilt.

            In the future, please remember.

I do it to protect you and that…

            I love you.

            He cried.

FINALLY! DONE!

Another angsty fic. Lance and Red really have a dysfunctional relationship don’t they? Not that it wasn’t cruel of Lance to break Red’s heart, but still, did that justify him killing her in response?

Red: *sobs*

Phantomness: *runs away quickly before Red can flame her*
