Chapter 3

“You did pretty well.” Red offered, as soon as the battle was won. Which, well, if he were being totally honest, could count as a tie, or maybe even a win for her…

Still, Attract was a cool move, if a bit cheap…

Her tactics reminded him too much of Blue.

            Blue…

Blue had gone off to Johto to ‘do research’. Well, he didn’t blame her, and Green had run off somewhere…

Yellow… still had his Pikachu. He hadn’t seen him in a while. He wanted his Pikachu back though…

Red quashed the feeling of jealousy. He was the one who had caught and raised Pikachu, so…! Pikachu was still his!

He couldn’t understand why Brock and Misty had given their precious pokemon away to Yellow. True, Misty had his Krabby, but it was a fair trade for her Gyarados he now had… but to give away pokemon?

He did not understand it at all…

            “What should I do?”

Pikachu shrugged. It was in the best interests of all if Red and Yellow got mated, in his opinion, but Yellow was so stubborn…

Why wouldn’t she tell Red the truth?

If she did, then there would be no problem… right?

Now this opponent had to be quickly taken care of…

What to do? What to do? Why were humans so strange?

Lance was about to leave when Red grabbed her arm.

            “What is it, Red?”

            “I sense danger…”

“Danger?” Lance frowned. “What do you mean?”

“It is just a feeling of being watched…”

Behind the bush, Yellow and Pika blinked. How had Red sensed that? He might have a bit of natural empathy, but that was all, wasn’t it?

Red would have said more but then a strange pain began to tingle in his fingers. “What? What’s going on?”

Catelyn looked around, sharp eyes spotting the two concealed in the bushes. No acting now, unless she wanted to amnesia them.

            Useless.

            “Can you help me…?”

            “What is it?”

“Call out… one of my pokemon, get to the Pokemon Center.” That was all Red got out before he blacked out.

            She understood.

She released his Gyarados and it eagerly flew them to the nearest Center, which wasn’t all that far away.

Then, a worried Nurse Joy took Red inside.

Ah, well, these things did happen, unfortunately…

Red woke up, wondering if he had contracted some strange disease, which made him faint all the time.

He felt tired, but his skin was buzzing. Eek! What was going on?

As he concentrated, he saw the faintest feather-pattern on his arms. Feathers? But he wasn’t a bird pokemon! He really wasn’t a bird, was he!

No. He was being ridiculous. Of course he wasn’t a bird. He was a human, a trainer, a Champion…

Nurse Joy came in a few minutes later.

“Nurse Joy, what’s wrong with me? I feel weird.”

Nurse Joy frowned. “All I can tell is that you seem to be dehydrated. Well, perhaps there’s a bit of malnutrition too, but that’s it. Eat a few good meals and drink lots of water and you should be fine from now on.”

            “Thank you very much!”

“Your girlfriend is waiting for you outside.” Joy said.

Girlfriend? Oh, Catelyn must have brought him here… he was about to say ‘She’s not my girlfriend’ by Nurse Joy had already left.

Catelyn came up with a basket of cherries.

            “Are you feeling any better?”

“A little bit, thank you.” Red grinned wanly. “So what about you?”

“Me? I’m fine I just brought you here like you told me to.”

Well, she could follow directions at least… * She’s not so bad *

“So you really are all right?”

Red popped a cherry in his mouth and grinned. “Fine now. Anything’s better than the hospital food they serve.”

Nurse Joy let him out ten minutes later after she had give him one last check through. “Take care of yourself, Red.”

            “I will!”

“So, where do you want to go for dinner?”

Catelyn blinked. “You’re taking me out?”

“I can’t cook, not really.” Red shrugged. He’d lived off canned, tinned, freeze-dried, and instant food during his journey, except for the meals he’d been treated to often as part of Champion and general all around do-gooder status…

He really did not want any of that tonight, after the stress of fainting…

“Well, it’s your choice, since you are paying.”

“You rushed me to the hospital. I’ll treat you out to dinner and we’ll clear all debts between us. How does that sound?”

“Well, when you put it that way, do they have Italian here?”

            “Probably, let’s look around.”

Back home, Yellow was reading a popular female magazine to try and figure out how to win Red’s heart and eliminate the opposition…

She should have expected it. There were fangirls everywhere, but still!

            Hmm…

Unfortunately, she was only nine, and not quite old enough to deal with some of the things discussed in the book that she had absolutely no desire to know.

            Grr…

I love ‘One Card Short’, the Yu-gi-oh movie song… it’s so cool…

‘Stacked the deck myself, so there’s no one else to blame…’ should we cheat in life then? *Laughs*
