Chapter 7

Lance finally grew bored of fighting Yellow – she’d taken out the Doduo and Golem as well. With a snap, the Chosen sent the other girl vanishing into the obscurity of deep space.

It wasn’t really killing her. She’d just find it difficult to get back here…

Red continued to slumber on; wholly unaware of what had transpired. And as Yellow had no pokedex or other tracking device on her, her disappearance was summarily ignored.

Lance let herself sleep. Red would be out for a few days… and she could use some magic replenishing as well…

Ah how life was in this world. Kill or be killed. None of that Live and let live the peacemakers talked about. In some ways, those that tried to make peace were worse than those that made war…

            In any case, Lance slept.

Red woke up feeling strangely refreshed an indeterminate amount of time later.

Lance was waiting with a mug of hot chamomile tea. “Well, I’m glad you’re up. You’ve been out for a week.”

            “A week? Impossible!”

“I’m afraid it’s very possible.” Lance shrugged. “Here, drink this.” Red took the proffered mug and sipped slowly. The tea was spicy and quite good, plus it helped his mild headache ebb away…

Maybe he had been tired enough. Or he hadn’t slept the whole time, only most of it, thanks to the fever he had been running. He felt fine now though. Was that normal?

Lance smiled and then presented him with egg pudding. It had protein and would not alarm his stomach after days without food. Red finished off three puddings before he slowed down.

Lance made a mental note and then they continued on their journey, after Red had taken a nice long bath in the stream… ugh.

            Fevers really sucked.

They were heading to Mahogany town. Red had decided that he had to conquer his fear of ice-types, and what better way than battling a gym leader that controlled the ice type? Or at least it made sense in his mind. Not that his logic was twisted, it was just that Pryce was evil.

No. Really. Perhaps there was some conspiracy to make higher elemental masters evil? Perhaps… but that wasn’t important.

“So,” Lance said, as they walked into the town, “Which of your pokemon are you going to use?”

“Mm, I don’t know. Poliwrath won’t have much of an advantage and if I use Venus, she’ll definitely be at a disadvantage. Maybe Aeroy or Gyara.”

“Interesting. I didn’t know you liked dragon pokemon.”

“Oh I do, it’s just that…” Red blushed. “They have a bad rep now.”

            “Oh? Why?”

Red colored. “Haven’t you heard the news? There was this evil person named Lance who led the Elite Four and they were trying to destroy the world!”

Lance seethed inwardly. * I was trying to free the pokémon and destroy humanity, not the world! Stupid media never gets it straight. *

            “So...”

“So we fought them. And we beat them. Me and Green and Blue and Yellow.”

“How interesting,” Lance said after a pause. “What happened then?”

“I guess they all died.” Red said quietly, not wanting to dwell on the unpleasant thought. Killing wasn’t good… “Well, I mean, Bruno didn’t die, but we haven’t seen any of the others, and the volcano did explode…”

Lance resisted an urge to laugh. The Elite were not that weak!

“So how do you know about Bruno?”

            “I fought him.”

“Did you? What pokemon did you use, then?”

            “Poliwrath and Venusaur and Vaporeon!”

            “I didn’t know you had a Vaporeon.”

Red blushed. “Yeah, well, Eevee was still recovering after the incident at Silph, so I didn’t use her in the championships.”

            “Ah…”

            “Why are you so curious?”

“Perhaps I might compete in the Kanto championships this year.”

“Oh, I get it. You want to become the Tenth League Champion. Well, I wouldn’t mind giving you some tips.”

            “Really?”

            “What are friends for?”

            Friends… if only...

Ah, Red, when you find out the truth about me, how will you feel? How will things spin out? What will happen to us now?

No, I must dwell on pleasant thoughts for the short duration that I have them…

Lance forced out a smile and nodded. “I understand, Red. I should probably get some more pokemon.”

“Yes, you need three for each round and more variety than just two pokemon…”

Lance hesitated. “But I only like dragons.”

            “Then we’ll just find some!”

            Naïve child... “All right…”

It was cold and dark and cold and dark until the light came and rescued the one lost in the darkness…

But then darkness tainted light and made it shadow and all was lost again…

“I will not let you win.” She whispered. The blade was in her hand and the flame was in her heart as she brought it down.

It did not matter if an innocent was destroyed. So what if it was one life against the fate of the world?

            Make the sacrifice.

That was the right thing to do.
