Chapter 2

After the initial shock had worn off, Ash and Co. went exploring. They found a Pokemon Center, but there were no trainers…

Many houses stood around, well kept, but they were empty.

“Chansey, what is glitch city like?”

There are almost no trainers… but the pokemon are easy to catch. That’s all I heard…

            “Hmm…”

“Excuse me!” A man in a black lab coat appeared. “Are you from the other world?”

            Ash blinked and nodded.

“You must be confused. I’m Professor Lithium. I’ll tell you how things work here.”

Having nothing better to do, Ash followed.

“You see, it’s so rare to see a trainer here.” Professor Lithium said. “Glitch City is like a Pokemon paradise in a sense. Practically every species of pokemon imaginable lives here.”

            “Why aren’t there any trainers?”

“The portal only opens when an innocent trainer stands before the gate at exactly the right time, with no idea what awaits.”

            “Oh.”

“Here, you’re looking peaked. Have some of this. I know you’re probably feeling flummoxed right now…”

Ash took the cup, sipped. Hot chocolate.

“So what do I have to do?”

“Nothing, really… just have fun. Relax! Make friends with your pokemon.”

            “… All right.”

“By the way, would you happen to have any rodent pokemon? They aren’t native to this area, and I would dearly like a few…”

Pikachu scrunched down in Ash’s backpack.

            “Hmm… I have Rattata, Nidoran…”

            “I’ll trade you for them.”

            “Oh! Okay!”

“I should warn you though, rarity limits are pretty much flipped here. What is legendary out there is common here.”

            “Hmm?”

“I’ll give you all of these.”

Ash’s eyes popped out as he saw thirty poke balls offered to him. “All of those? But! Isn’t that cheating you?”

“Nonsense! They’re worth much more, remember, you can’t catch them here, but I can’t give you all my pokemon. Enjoy! These are bred to be obedient.”

            “… Okay…”

“Oh, and just find a house you like. They’re all empty anyways.”

“Professor Lithium, are there any people here besides us?”

“Oh… there’s Professor Curium, Professor Titanium, Professor Neon, and a few Nurse Joys and Officer Jennies.”

            “No trainers?”

“You can fight holograms that give experience, but no. We’re the only humans here…”

            That thought was quite frightening.

Ash thanked the Professor, and left.

So a year… cheer up, Master Ash! It may not be that bad. Chansey urged.

            Ash nodded.

A sudden thought struck him, and he went to the Pokemon Center. There, he enrolled in a nine-month course on Pokemon medicine.

It was mostly done through holograms, six hours a day, but occasionally, a Professor would bring in injured or ill pokemon, and he would be able to touch real pokemon.

It didn’t make much difference. They had superb technology, and virtual reality was every bit as real as… reality.

Ash became acquainted with his pokemon, old and new, but he did wish that Squirtle and Bulbasaur could be with him.

The year finally did roll to an end though.

Ash was surprised when he felt that he did not want to leave.

We will be going with you, of course. Pikachu said.

            “I know, Pikachu.”

Are you worried? Chansey asked, busy packing her nurses bag with first-aid supplies in case of any accidents.

            “Kind of…”

            < Why? >

Mewtwo and Mew were busy playing gin rummy along with Skymew and Starmew. They had all agreed not to cheat using their psychic powers. Mew flipped her tail, grinning as she laid down all four aces.

Starmew shrugged. * What to do… I don’t need this… * He picked up the four in the stack, and put down the queen of diamonds.

Skymew drew a card, grinned, and put down three twos, before putting down her last card and bombing everyone else.

            Mewtwo sighed. * Looks like I lose again… *

But he wasn’t angry. Why would he be? It was just a game.

            Master Ash was so laid-back.

            It was relaxing.

Well… he had been quite busy, taking those nursing classes, but he had made time to spend with all his pokemon…

No matter how many of them there were.

            “Professor Lithium?”

            “What is it, Ash?”

“I…I’m not sure I want to go home.”

            “That’s perfectly reasonable.”

Ash nervously fiddled with his poke belt, specially designed to hold up to five hundred poke balls, using very complicated subspace technology.

“But isn’t it infringing on your kindness?”

“Nonsense! If you feel that badly about it, for the next year you can help me with my research?”

            “Really? I can stay?”

“Certainly.” And it was true. * The boy is still as innocent as he was, which is odd… but he does not abuse the power we have granted him… he may even be able to live here permanently… *

            How interesting.

Such a case had happened before, but that was a long time ago… besides, he had only stayed four years, and they later heard from one of his pokemon that he had died in the real world…
