Chapter 2

It’s not that bad father. At least I can still fly.

“You could have been a pretty little dragon like you were meant to be, but no.” Lugia huffed. Ash, being the only one awake at the time, was feigning unconsciousness and listening in… and trying not to breathe too loudly.

Bloody radio wave would have turned me into a Dragonite. Dragonite’s dragon/flying type, but thanks to the dragon DNA I already have, all I got hit with was flying. I don’t know why I’m a Noctowl though.

That makes no sense whatsoever. I’m flying/psychic type.

            Well…

Wait, now Lance’s father was speaking in pokespeech? And what was this about being a flying and psychic type?

            Was Lance’s father a Xatu?

But then, that didn’t make any sense with the comment about dragons…

            I worry about you, child…

            Father…

I can’t reverse this – well, not now, at least. These things take time…

Pity, time’s not on our side.

No. Well, no matter what, I still love you.

The Noctowl nodded and then flew off into an open window.

Lugia fixed a glare on Ash. You can stop pretending now.

“How did you know I was still awake?” Ash decided that maybe coming clean was better than being found out and possibly punished later.

“None of your concern. Lance trusts you, although you’ve done nothing to deserve it…”

            Huh?”

“You can’t journey now. Go see Professor Oak if you think he can provide a cure. But tell anyone – anyone of my son’s condition, and I will kill you.”

            Ash paled.

            Satisfied, Lugia left…

Lance shrugged as he curled up on his bed – or tried to, and his dragon pokemon curled up around him. Ah, back to normal… well, as close as he could get while still being a bird. But being a pokemon wasn’t that bad.

Ash went outside – well, he went looking for Lance, but he found that it was a pain to try and get up stairs when you were only a foot tall, and so he took off to find Misty and Brock. He found Lance’s father trying to drown them in a fishpond. Needless to say, it didn’t succeed with either one of them. Misty was, unfortunately, a water-type, and Brock was struggling too hard…

“I have no idea why you travel with them.” Lugia said huffily. “I suppose you can stay the night if you wish. You’re heading to Professor Oak’s then, I suppose.”

            “Yes…”

“That could be a problem. After all, there’s no way to verify your identity. Your pokemon are gone…”

“What?” Ash gasped. “When did that happen?”

“You don’t honestly think that Cyndaquil and Totodile are the only ones you fused with? The others are all inside of you, but you just don’t see it… Or something like that...”

            Oh no…

“Besides, we are currently in Blackthorn City. There is no mode of transportation that I know of that you can employ… although I suppose we could try sending you through the pokemon transport system. You certainly can’t drive or ride a bicycle, walking would take months considering your states, and… do you think you can fly?”

            Ash looked down.

Lugia shrugged. “Then again, I suppose it wouldn’t hurt if I dropped you off there. I’ll have one of Lance’s Dragonair take you home tomorrow.”

            “Lance has pokemon?”

Lugia shot Ash a look that clearly said ‘Are you an idiot’? “Whose Aerodactyl do you think brought you here?”

“But I thought he got combined with his pokemon as well!”

“Fortunately, only the Red Gyarados he captured yesterday was in close enough vicinity. The other dragons escaped and notified me immediately.”

            “… What?”

“You really must build up your vocabulary – you’re fourteen, aren’t you? Perhaps school would help instead of the journey you insist on going on.”

Why did Lance’s father seem to hate him so much?

            Ash sighed… * It’s not fair! I didn’t do anything! *

You only messed up his investigation into Lake of Rage, forced him to rescue you, blew his cover… and turned him into a pokemon on top of that!

Ash winced. * Shut up, brain. *

            Sorry.

No, things were not going well. A few hours later, after Brock and Misty ad been stuffed into poke balls and sent through the pokemon transporter that Lance’s father – scary person – had, Ash was knocked over the head with a poke ball and also transmitted.

When he was once again released – after panicking, he had turned into red like inside the ball and that was not fun at all! He found Professor Oak staring at him.

            He sighed.

He looked like a Totodile on fire with a human face, honestly.

            “… Ash?”

            “Yes.”

“Oh dear. At first I considered this some prank, but now…”

            “But now?”

“I don’t know how to fix this, Ash. How did it happen?”

            “I wish I knew…”

Oak finally got over his surprise. “Well, it looks like you have Totodile and Cyndaquil DNA, I’ll just take a blood sample, do the same to – those are Misty and Brock, aren’t they?”

            Ash nodded.

“Well, all right, I’ll see what I can do… my, my, how did this happen?”

“We were at Lake of Rage.”

“Lake of Rage Oh, the G-men, just broke that up – turns out there was a Team Rocket Base in Mahogany Town – wait.”

            Ash winced.

“You were there? Ah, can’t you ever stay out of trouble, Ash?”

“Sorry?” Ash said, hoping he didn’t sound as pathetic as he felt.

“Seems like a curse of some sort, you always getting lost and into trouble.” Professor Oak said, as he took out a syringe. “Just a little pinprick, Ash, nothing big.”

            Ash sighed.

This was not going to be fun…
