Chapter 3

“Bill, do you think you could help?”

“Me?”

“You still have the Teleporter and the Cell Separation System at your house, right?” Oak asked.

Bill blinked. Yes, he’d accidentally gotten himself combined with a Nidoran M a few years back and a wandering trainer had helped him out, but…

“Why do you need that?”

“You’ll see when you get to my lab.”

“I’ll be there in a few moments.” Outside, Bill released his Farfetch’d and then flew to Pallet Town. It wasn’t that far from Cerulean City…

He found his answer quite quickly. The three trainers who had been turned into pokemon looked absolutely miserable…

If he weren’t so flabbergasted, he would have laughed.

“I see your problem, Samuel…”

“So, do you think you can help?”

“Well…” Bill hesitated. “How did this happen? Normally, if it happened like I think it did, I would just stick them in the Teleporter and initiate the Cell Separation program, but…”

“But what?”

“I’ve never dealt with this – it looks like they’re a combination of two pokemon, or maybe more… chimera.”

“Hmm, I don’t think there was any change in DNA…”

“I guess we’ll have to experiment and see…”

“How long does it take your program to run?”

“Only a few minutes.”
            “Good.”

Ash eeped as Professor Oak told him to get in the machine, but he really didn’t want to spend his life as a pokemon – no matter how much he liked pokemon, he didn’t want to be one, so he went in and waited, and there was this really, really odd tingling sensation, but a few moments later, when he came out, he found that yes, he was human again, and there was a Totodile and a Cyndaquil glomped onto his leg, but…

Where were the rest of his pokemon?

In any case, he went out, and Bill cheered.

“It worked!”

“Yes, but…” Ash didn’t quite get a chance to say anything before Brock was now shoved into the machine…

            Suddenly, an explosion sounded.

Bill gasped and looked out the window, only to see that a Hitmonlee had suddenly, inexplicably, destroyed his beach cottage!

            “What the-?”

            Ash stared. “That’s-!”

            Bruno?

Why would Bruno want to destroy the teleporter?

He watched as Bruno and his Hitmonlee began to run away. “Hey! Come back!”

“Ash, wait!” Oak shouted. “Something may be wrong here! Why don’t you be calm? We’ll see what happened.”

“My Teleporter? It’s…” Bill made a strangled choking sound as he pointed at the metal tube, which had been ripped from the wall.

            “Is Brock all right?”

“I don’t know! The Cell Separation system was still in progress when he was inside. He’s…”

Oak ran over and yanked the door open. Brock spilled out, along with a terrified Zubat. Brock’s skin was still a pasty, rocky, gray though.

            “It looks like Geodude’s still combined…but Zubat isn’t anymore…”

            “What about me?” Misty yelled.

“That’s for later!” Oak said. “First, I want to see what that was all about! I’m calling Pokemon League HQ for an explanation this instant!”

An ominous silence filled the air as Oak pulled out a cell phone and dialed.

“Hello, you have reached the Pokemon League Headquarters. This is Lorelei speaking. How may I help you?”

Misty immediately shut up, hearing her idol’s voice on the phone.

“Lorelei is it?” Oak asked. “Do you have any idea why Bruno just broke down Bill’s sea cottage?”

There was a pause. “One moment. I didn’t know Bruno wasn’t at the Plateau. I’ll ask Agatha.”

There were a few moments of silence before an old woman came on the phone. “This is Agatha. Ah, hello, Samuel Oak. I haven’t spoken to you in a long time…”

“Agatha; now is no time to be coy! Where is Bruno?”

“Bruno? What has our Fighting Master done now?”

“He – or an imposter – just broke into Bill’s sea cottage! I want an explanation now! The Teleporter was destroyed!”

“Hmm…” Agatha nodded. “I’ll check. One moment please…”

There was a clattering of keys as the Elite ran through her computer system. “Bruno’s been on vacation for the past week, but his whereabouts are … he ought to still be in Mount Moon if the tracking device works properly…”

            “He has?”

“Yes. To my knowledge, he ought to still be there. Still, if you would like further reassurance… I’ll send one of my ghosts to check on him.”

“That would be helpful.” Oak said dryly.

“Very well. Was there anything else you required, Samuel?”

            “None of your concern!”

Agatha laughed after Oak had hung up. “I probably stopped some crazy science experiment of yours…. What do you think, Lance?”

The Noctowl shrugged and began to preen.

            “A bit huffy?”

Well, being a bird isn’t that bad of a fate…

            “Can’t you change back?”

            I don’t feel like it.

“Ah, that’s the real reason… may I inquire as to why, Dragon Master?”

I have the rest of their pokemon locked inside my system right now – it will prove interesting when they discover that.

            “Angling as usual.”

Ah, I do what I can for my own benefit…

“Indeed.” The ghost master said dryly. “Indeed…” Well, all that extra mass had to go somewhere… “What have you got?”

            Bayleef, Pikachu, Togepi, Vulpix, Poliwhirl…

“Interesting combination. Normal, grass, lightning, fire, water… the four elements dragons are practically immune to…”

“Yes. When they figure it out, well, things will get interesting…” Lorelei smiled. “You have Noctowl too, right? As your base?”

            Oh, Ash has a Noctowl?

            “He had.”

Lance laughed. This will be interesting…

I’m not too clear on which pokemon Ash has in Johto, or Misty, or Brock for that matter, so I’m guessing…

Heracross and Phanpy were not mentioned. I hope Ash didn’t have Phanpy on him.
