Chapter 4

“How long will it take you to fix the Teleporter, Bill?”

The scientist looked up. “I don’t know.” He said honestly. “I suppose it’s lucky that only one of the tubes was damaged. Unfortunately, it was the one Brock was currently in, and this is the one where you separate the DNA, obviously. The other tube is used for combining DNA…”

“Just give me a time frame, Bill.”

“How should I know? It took me four years to build this! It’s never failed before, and I have no idea what’s wrong yet besides the obvious – do you know how many wires and codes are in this, Samuel? Don’t pester me! I’m trying to concentrate!”

Oak sighed. “This is not good…”

Ash felt suddenly guilty that he had made it out in one piece and Brock and Misty, quite obviously, hadn’t.

Misty was sure to blame this on him.

            He’d better sneak out first!

            “Um, Professor?”

            “Yes, Ash?”

“I’m going to go look for the rest of my pokemon…”

Oak frowned. “The rest of your pokemon?”

“Yes… I mean, Pikachu and Bayleef and Noctowl were with me too when I got… changed, but I don’t know where they are now… and if they didn’t fuse with me, then…”

“I understand. Take care of yourself Ash. Where are you going?”

“Um… Saffron City first, to catch the Magnet Train to Johto…”

“You might want to transfer a few more pokemon to your team then.”

“Oh! That’s right…” Ash fiddled with his pokedex for a few moments, bringing over Pidgeot. He’d need a flying-type at least.

Climbing on the bird’s back, he took off for Saffron, where he bought a Magnet Train ticket and took the train to Johto…

There, he flew to Mahogany Town and began searching for the area where he had been in with his pokemon…

            Perhaps he could ask Lance?

            But Lance was a Noctowl.

            A Noctowl.

“Oh no…” Ash gulped. “He didn’t combine with my pokemon, did he? That would be bad…”

            Lance yawned.

“He’ll be here soon, I expect.”

Most likely... This ought to be amusing…

“You’re… quite cruel your pursuits, my dear cousin.”

Am I? Oh, I suppose I am, but there’s no fun without a little danger…

            “True…”

The Champion shrugged, if a bird can shrug, and began preening himself again. Lorelei poured herself another cup of tea and went back to her fashion magazine.

“Pidgeot, we’re going to Indigo Plateau.”

The bird yawned, nodded his head, allowed Ash to climb on, and took off again…

            This was…. A problem.

            “Lance!”

“Do you have an appointment?” Lorelei asked, as Ash ran in through the doors.

            ‘Huh?”

“Why are you here? It’s not League season.”

“Can I talk to Lance?” Ash asked.

Lorelei suppressed a grin. “Lance? Why would you need to talk to the Champion? If there’s some problem with your pokemon, I can take care of it.”

“It’s not that,” Ash gulped, but ploughed on forwards bravely. “I think he accidentally got turned into my Noctowl!”

Lorelei dropped her pen in admirable mock-surprise. “What?”

            “Can I see him, please?”

“All right… if he knows you, perhaps he won’t mind…”

She led him down a hallway – marble, black and white tiles, alternating squares on the floor, walls a deep indigo color…

“Lance, visitor for you!” Lorelei said cheerfully, as she opened another door. This one was… well, just an ordinary door.

The room inside was pitch-black. All the curtains were closed. There was a bed with dark blue curtains, but the curtains were drawn with gold cords.

            Ash gulped.

            Lorelei sighed. “Lance… I know you’re here.”

A Noctowl grumpily poked its head out of the curtains.

“Oh, I forgot. You’re nocturnal now, aren’t you? But this is important. Talk to him, all right? I’ll be back in a few hours to see if anything of value happened. Do try not to kill him…”

By now, Ash was turning pale. What had he gotten himself into?

This was not a good thing!

            Well… what do you want?

            “Hmm? I can’t understand you.”

Lance clicked his beak in annoyance. Figures. Without the pokemon DNA you’re just another human, despite your blood… Which is sadly hidden…

“Sorry.” Ash said apologetically. “Lance, do you understand me? Nod if you do.”

I’m not some pathetic bird just because I’m in a bird’s body, and unlike you, I’m not an idiot. Lance huffed, but he nodded.

“Okay, good! Listen, Lance, I think you’ve accidentally got combined with my Noctowl….”

            I already knew that!

“But since Bill’s Teleporter is broken, I can’t change you back… and we don’t know how long it will take to fix it…”

Forever, if I play my cards right, or at least a few months, which is useful…

            “So… um… I’m sorry?”

Lance nuzzled Ash’s chest, and Ash gulped.

“Woah… woah… er, you are Lance, right? Unless he didn’t keep his mind like we did and got turned into a pokemon… um… well, at least I still looked kind of human and Brock does now except for his gray skin but that’s not too bad…”

Ah yes, Bruno hadn’t wanted to harm Brock, and some rock skin couldn’t hurt a want-to-be Rock Master in any case…

They covered his back, and he had an alibi, and one doesn’t just go around accusing the Elite Four of petty crime….

            Sometimes it’s useful having power.

“Hi?” Ash squeaked, as Lance continued to nuzzle him. “Er, Lance, we really shouldn’t… er, I don’t know if you understand me but-!”

The Noctowl smirked to itself and continued to ‘groom’ Ash.

Ash was rapidly turning pink and losing coherency…

Hmm… perfect… This will be fun, Ash so don’t worry…. Lance whispered. Ash was awfully short, 4’10, 4’11 at the most, and a Noctowl stood 5’03 according to the pokédex… this would be fun…

He could still pull off height advantage then.

Ash was an amazing shade of pink, he couldn’t talk, couldn’t move, could hardly breathe as Lance began to peel off his clothes with his beak. What was he doing?

To his extreme embarrassment, something was not right…

“Eek! No! Down! Bad pokemon!” Ash yelped as Lance’s wing grazed a very sensitive area. “Don’t-!”

His breath caught in a gasp – it wasn’t as if it hurt, but!

What was he going to do?

What was he going to do?

Lance continued to hoot softly as he began brushing his wings over Ash’s body, and especially that one spot that just wouldn’t… Argh!

With a strangled shout, he couldn’t help his natural reaction… it wasn’t as if anyone else had touched him there before!

Ash watched in helpless fascination as Lance began to groom him again, stripping the soiled feathers of their clear fluid…

            And then…

Oh Merciful Mew, someone was going to kill him…

He flailed like a sack of limbs for a few moments after Lance pushed him onto the bed, but after that, everything was surprisingly, quite simple.

            It didn’t hurt much anyway.

When Lorelei checked back in on them – it was nearing evening, he could tell because it was dark and everything, he had managed to shower and make himself look presentable again, aside from his beating heart and flushing emotions…

            Was this normal?

He wasn’t sure, but even if it weren’t, he couldn’t help but wonder if they could do it again…

Lance was perched on the bed, fast asleep. Ash sighed. He hadn’t really gotten anything accomplished today…

            Oh well.
