Chapter 3

Red stood, stunned, before his brain caught up and he took a few steps forward to Lancefs side. As he rolled him off of Aeroy, he winced. Lance was emanating waves of exhaustion; enough to make Red feel tired him self, but he had to stay awake. He dragged Lance over to the bed, pulled off his boots, and pulled a blanket over him, not sure what else to do. Then he went to fish.

Vee sat by his side, flicking her tails as she stared at the fish in the water below with interest. Red waited until she dove into the water, re-emerging a moment later with a fat silvery fish in her jaws. She devoured it swiftly, bones and all, before licking her whiskers clean.

            gVee?h

            < Yes, Red? >

gHow did Lance heal Aerodactyl? He shouldnft have Viridianfs power anymore!h

Vee blinked. < I do not know. >

gWell, I guess it isnft very important.h Red sighed. gMaybe I can ask him when he wakes up.h

Vee nodded, and Red blinked as a tug came on his fishing line. He swiftly hauled the fish up, smiling.

It looked like he wouldnft be going hungry today either.

Lance didnft wake up until the next day, and Red was half-asleep when he heard him moving around in the small area that served as the kitchen. Lance seemed to be making tea, heating it over the stove. Red had finally discovered it was paraffin stove, and another cave filled with tins of paraffin made him wonder how long Lance had been preparing this hideout and if he had known about the impeding disaster.

            Nahc

Though the presence of several boxes of tinned food did make him wonderc

            gLance, youfre awake.h

The Dragon Master inclined his head in a nod, adding another pinch of tealeaves to the boiling kettle. Green tea simmered slowly as he watched.

gIc just want to say thank you.h Red told him, managing not to stammer.

Lance peered at him. gFor what?h

gHealing Aeroyc I donft know what I would have done without your help.h Red gulped. gI didnft pack any Potions.h

gThat explains why you were trying that.h Lance shook his head. gA word of advice. Self-healing moves will not work on another pokémon. It causes indescribable agony to both the healer and the recipient.h

The tone of the voice indicated that Lance had most likely experienced such firsthand, and Red decided he most decidedly did not want to know what had happened. Still, it was nice of Lance to save Aeroy from a similar fate.

gI could hardly leave a dragon pokémon to suffer, after all.h Lance murmured, and Red could find no fault with that reasoning.

            Lancec

What had happened to his pokémon? Now that he had the opportunity to ask, Red eagerly took it.

gLance, what happened to your pokémon?h

gThey are gone.h The Dragon Master replied in a soft tone.

gG-Gone?h Red goggled at him. gYou released them?h

gIt was not a hard decision.h Lance agreed. gThey were safer where they would not reap the whirlwind.h

gc I have no idea what you just said.h Red told him honestly.

gIt was safer of me not to keep them.h Lance translated. Red gaped at him for a few seconds, before he shook his head.

gWhat do you mean Lance? Youfre their trainer!h

gI was.h Lance corrected. gNow, if youfll excuse me.h He brushed past Red, taking a cup of tea with him, and left the secret cave. Red stared after him, not sure what to say.

How could someone just abandon his pokémon like that? It was so cruel!

But Lance was cruel, wasnft he? He was the Leader of the Elite Four, and had tried to destroy the human populationc Red shivered.

He had allowed himself to believe otherwise, since Lance had been almost nice, but he had been wrong.

            Lance really was evil!

If Red knew where else to go, he would have rushed out, but then his mind tactfully reminded him that at least here he had food and a place to sleep, even if it was just a couch with blankets.

            It was better than nothingc

But then again, Lance couldnft be completely bad! He had healed Aeroy! Right?

Even Giovannic Giovanni wasnft totally evil. He had cared enough for Silver to save him from certain deathc

Red sighed. Sometimes, he wished he had Serebii so he could just back time and save the forest, or Jirachi, so he could wish it back into existence, but that would be cheap.

Would things really be better then? His relationship with Yellow was irrevocably damaged, and he could not forgive her. The grief was still too fresh.

            < Father? >

Red jumped, before realizing it was only Deoxys. He tossed his seventh poke ball forwards, watching as the space virus pokémon materialized.

Deoxys was his child, one of Team Rocketfs experiments made using his blood. Hefd been horrified when hefd discovered the truth, but he could not hate the pokémon who was his son.

Besides, they had managed to survive being turned to stone – three months later, Professor Oak had found a cure and freed them.

Red was still a bit claustrophobic, and his earlier experiences frozen in ice due to Loreleifs cuffs hadnft helped.

Loreleic had changed, when he had met her in the Sevii Islands, but Lancec

Lance frightened him, and as Red watched Deoxys shift to Defense Form, he wondered ifc no.

< Why does he frighten you, Father? > Deoxys asked curiously. < I sense no ill intent. > So that was why it was in Defense and not Attack formc

            Red sighed. gI donft knowch
