Chapter 3: The long road ahead

“I love camping.” Ash said. They were two days away from Cerulean City, in a propylene pink tent.

            “Really?” Sabrina asked.

Ash nodded. “Yep!” He was making stew over a fire. Vulpix, Eevee, and Dratini were all waiting for their shares, along with Sabrina’s Kadabra, Haunter, and Alakazam.

            I’m hungry!

            Me too!

            Hurry up, Ash! Cook faster!

Can’t you kids be more polite?

            Who are you to talk?

            Yeah!

            Let’s play a game!

No! I’m starving! I can’t play on an empty stomach!

            So am I!

Ash laughed and began ladling the stew out. “Ok, it’s done!”

            Yay!

Ash, Sabrina, and the pokemon sat down and ate quietly.

            Sabrina ruffled Ash’s hair. * He’s so cute… *

            Ash yawned. “I’m tired.”

“Well, it is getting late. Get some sleep.”

“I know.” Ash said. He finished his dinner and then climbed into his blue sleeping bag. “Night, Sabrina.”

            “Goodnight, Red.”

A faint red light and a faint blue light flew overhead for a brief second, but that was all. Red didn’t even stir. His eyes were closed in peaceful slumber. Sabrina slept as well. A peaceful, dreamless sleep.

The next morning, they set off to look for adventure.

“A.J.’s gym?” Ash asked. He shrugged. “Is this a real gym?”

Sabrina pointed to the wall. < See that? Not sanctioned by the Pokemon League. I wonder why he bothered to build it? >

< Well, if he set up a gym, he must be a pretty good trainer. >

< Are you going to challenge him? >

            Ash nodded and smiled.

A.J. was having breakfast with his pokemon when he heard footsteps. “Must be another challenger.”

He walked outside. “Hey! Ash, is that you? Long time no see! Where’s that Pikachu of yours?”

Ash stared. “Not again! Why does everyone think I’m Ash? My name is Red!”

            A.J. stopped. “Oh.”

“And I challenge you to a battle!”

“So be it.” A.J. said. “You have two badges, right? Let’s begin. Beedrill, go!”

“Vulpix, you’re up!” Ash said, throwing the poke ball forwards. “Rapid Fire now!”
Vulpix nodded and started sending fast bolts of fire at Beedrill, who didn’t successfully dodge them all.

“Come on, Beedrill, ah trained you much better than that.” A.J. said. “Twinneedle!”
            “Vulpix, Flamethrower!”
Beedrill flew straight into the flames. When they cleared, it lay on the ground crispified. A.J. gasped in shock.

“Beedrill, return! Looks like I underestimated you. Raticate, go!”

“Vulpix, you’re not up to speed yet. Return. Eevee, go!”

Eevee popped out and took her position.

            “Super Fang, Raticate!”

            “Eevee, Extreemespeed!”

Eevee glowed blue and slammed into Raticate, sending it flying, before it could land a bite on her. Raticate got up and charged again.

This time, Eevee jumped straight up into the air and created many copies of herself with Double Team.

            “Attack ‘em all, Raticate!”

            “Eevee, Swift!”

Stars flew from all the Eevees, crashing into the Raticate.

“Okay, now finish it off with Return!”

Eevee glowed brightly, as a wave of power slammed into Raticate, knocking it out. Since Eevee was extremely loyal to Ash, the attack did a ton of damage.

A.J. was starting to sweat now.

            “Sandslash, yer up!”

“Eevee, return! I choose you, Dratini!”

            “A Dratini?!”

            “Dratini, Surf Now!”

“Ha! My Sandslash is resistant to water attacks!” A.J. said. Ash smiled mysteriously. The area filled with water.

“Okay, Sandslash, drain away the water with Earthquake!”

Dratini flew up into the air, away from the attack. Then, she let off Hyper Beam. Sandslash toppled over, but managed to use Swift.

“Before it recharges, use Ball Attack!”

Sandslash curled itself up into a ball and slammed into Dratini, who retaliated with Ice Beam.

This time, the attack worked. Sandslash, frozen solid, dropped to the floor.

            Ash grinned. “Great job, Dratini!”

Dratini winked and flew back down next to him. I’m the best!

A.J. could only stare in shock.

            “Can we go now, Sabrina?”

Sabrina nodded. * It didn’t bring up anything… odd. *

And so, Ash and Sabrina set off.
