Prologue: Glacier

She supposed she should have figured it out sooner. But really, she couldn’t have known. It wasn’t as if she kept track of birth and death records. All she had done was carry out the orders of the Chosen pokemon, and wait.

And the years had passed, in wishful anticipation.

How old had she been when the truth finally revealed itself? It was hard to remember. She was an ageless guardian after all. But she assumed that she was in her early thirties when reality finally shocked her out of her blissful unawareness.

He hadn’t been born.

He didn’t exist.

Her dream, her hope, all of them… shattered in an instant. And her reason, too…

For as the madness blazed in the eyes of the ice guardian, the elements themselves heeded the call of the chosen, and ran wild…

The bands of ice shattered her heart and wove around her chest, freezing her immobile as the ribbons of blue clothed her in the power of winter. And from the Plateau outwards, the snows crept, ever coming nearer and nearer. Even the tropical islands close to Indigo did not survive… and Kanto and Johto groaned under sheets of ice.

And they waited.

Waited for the light, and the warmth, and the light that would meld with the darkness to make shadow…
