Chapter 5: Dreaming of you, won’t help me in this time and place

A few days later, Ash and his pokemon having recuperated, they headed off to Vermillion next.

Ash decided that he could at least attempt to get the earlier badges.

            Surge would be easy.

Not worried at all, Master? Sneasal asked.

            “No.”

            I suppose you wouldn’t be.

            Ash cracked a grin. No.

Xatu flew ahead, occasionally swooping down and capturing a bug. Breakfast on the wing.

She snapped up another caterpillar, gulped it down, and then flew to investigate a blueberry bush peppered with the shiny globules.

            Yummy! < Ah, I love life. >

Sneasal and Cyndaquil also ran to the food.

            Bliss! Joy! Oh, wondrous day!

Ash chuckled as he helped himself to a bowl of milk and chocolate flakes. He sat down by the road and consumed the entire helping in five minutes.

            Yum.

As soon as they were all fed and watered, they began walking down the beaten path again. years of trainers traveling had worn out a recognizable swatch of dirt road.

At least it kept them out of the grass…

Rattata and Pidgey scampered and flew by. Then, Ash went onwards, still seeking for pokemon.

It was slightly disappointing, the lack of people, but he soon cheered up. After all, the world awaited.

Flashes of light heralded the arrival of a pokemon.

            < Hello. >
            “Mewtwo?”
The psychic cat smiled. < Yes, hello to you too. >

            Smiles were exchanged.

            “What brings you here?”

< Actually, I just wanted to check up on you, see if you were okay. >

            “Oh! Thanks.”

< No problem, Chosen One. >

Ash sighed. “Still haven’t figured out my Destiny yet.”

< I am sure you will in time. And you will have help. >

“Thanks,” Ash said with a beaming grin.

Mewtwo waved and then flew off again.

Oh yes, life was very peculiar, but at least some items on the world’s agenda stayed constant.

Three guardians, his pokemon, and an annoying serebii, although the latter was a major annoyance.

            Still… life was life.

Ash groomed Cyndaquil as he watched the clouds laze past.

Relaxation, he had better relish it now before duty smashed into him with a metal hammer.

He wondered what he would have to accomplish this time.

            Elsewhere…

< Well done, my Chosen. >

Lance stared at Lugia through blurred silver eyes, holding the small silver ball of light in her hands.

            < The Dragon’s Orb… >

< Yes, my Chosen. The Dragons’ Orb will be our eyes and ears as it traverses the land. Should it be destroyed, though…  >

< It is my life on the line. >

< Regrettably, that is the trade-off. > Lugia nudged Lance gently, trying to wake the Dragon Master up.

Lance slowly managed to stand shakily, using her wings for balance. < Can I? >

< Sleep now, my Chosen. > Lugia sent, as he picked her up and dove underwater. The orb flew off.

Lance was out for at least a week afterwards. Lugia took good care of his Chosen in that time.

            Meanwhile…

Zapdos soared overhead, looking for his Chosen. * Where is he? Little brother… I have a message for you. *

He finally spotted Ash and his pokemon camping outside Celadon. * Aha! Better use human form though, so nobody tries to catch me. *

Zapdos’s form blurred, as a blonde spiky haired boy in yellow (very ugly yellow) walked into the campsite. “Hi.”

            “Oniisan!”

            “How are you, little brother?”

“Fine!” Ash cheered. “Nice to see you again.”

            Xatu narrowed her eyes. * That’s! *

            < Legendary pokemon! >

“Oh, hush.” Zapdos said, waving off her bowing. “That’s enough. I just wanted to drop by and see you.”

            “I see…”

“In case you were wondering, Lugia and his Chosen are working on a project to make guardianship a bit easier.” Zapdos said. “So you won’t see her until its finished.”

            “Oh?”

            “Yes.”

“And…” Zapdos thought again. “Charlotte and her Chosen are on vacation.”

            “I see.”

“Plus, I just wanted to say, feel free to drop by and see us. We all miss you, little brother.”

“Okay!” Ash gave Zapdos a hug. The bird nodded and then soared off again.
