Chapter 1

He was a child of light, such a pretty little child, who shimmered like the sunlight. The shadows did not drown his soul in blood, but prettily accented the mischief in those clear eyes.

            “So pretty…”

It was too bad, really, that fate was against it. Strong fate, apropos, for it was fate that cannot be denied, did not agree.

            Still…

Even the cleverest knots can be unraveled in time, especially if you have all the time in the world.

Immortality is a blessing and a curse, it all depends on what you do with it, doesn’t it?
            Doesn’t it?

He licked the blood off his fingers with a disquieting gesture, as one of the shadows paused before him. “My lord.”

“Yes…” He drawled, looking at the mangled remains of a once-proud soul that had been condemned to his kingdom of shadows.

It was eternal night, but it wouldn’t be night for much longer. Oh no, no, even the underworld needs some light to shine in it, and he knew exactly which light to capture and hold and protect.

He would protect it and it would shine for him, and then he wouldn’t be in the darkness alone anymore.

The Dragonite behind his throne spread its black wings and soared off, summoned to another duty. Claire was calling.

Lance turned to the Aerodactyl who had brought the message and waited for the remainder.

“It will not be an easy task…”

“That I know already, get to the point…”

“However, it can be done, for tomorrow Lady Delia leaves to spin the stars into a tale of two lovers, and he shall be alone.”

“Excellent…” Lance said, as he stood up, cloak rustling like leaves around that lithe body. “Enjoy your reward.”

Aerodactyl’s eyes gleamed with malice as it flew off. Yes…

There is never any true light in the land of the shadows, which mortals have decided to call the underworld for lack of a better word. The darkness entangles all in its web, and the creatures of the night blend in and hide, submitting their will to only one high Master, the ruler of the dead. However, seven are the others who inhabit the realm, the lesser masters of dragons, of ice, of darkness, of the mind, of sight, of poison, and of puppets.

Claire. Lorelei. Karen. Will. Morty. Koga. Sabrina.

They all live in the shadows of endless night; but they have adapted and they need not the light of day to see. For their eyes are not eyes truly, but eyes of the soul and see only what they wish.

The silver blades of death dance in the night when the Dragon Master deals death to the ones who cross the threshold.

Be very wary, those who might trespass, for this world taints and corrupts and the shadows will steal away the soul.

But of course, still the fools come ever present.

The seven guard the gates, and pity the one who happens upon them, for justice is swift and vengeance strikes without warning.

            The balance remains.

Ash hugged the purring Pikachu to his body, enjoying the warm spring day. Flowers bloomed in an idyllic pastoral scene, the meadow scented with wildflowers spiraling to the blue sky.

Pikachu flipped her ears, and settled down to rest.

Ah… days like this were so common, it was lucky that Ash had not yet been gifted with a duty by the higher powers…

He was still a child in their opinion, though he had ceased to age. All Chosen by the legendaries had their own sphere of influence, and their own role to carry out. Immortality then, was a blessing.

There was endless time to learn and grow and shine.

However, it had been nearly two hundred years since he had first been brought into the world, and although that was young for an immortal, Pikachu wondered if he did have a place.

It wasn’t as though she minded; she was one of his chosen pokemon and would stay ageless as well.

But… sometimes, it got really boring.

Pikachu slapped that thought to the back of her mind, she would yearn for these days soon enough when Ash got his real job, right? So why fuss now.

            She went back to sleep.

Ash smiled as he watched his pokemon frolic. So cute!
Still… he was kind of bored. But Ho-oh and Mewtwo both said he couldn’t’ leave the area, and explore…

That wasn’t very fair, but he’d live with it.

I do hope something interesting happens soon.

            “Ash!”

            “Yes, mom?”

Delia smoothed down the warm brown dress and over-robe she wore as the patron of mothers. “I have much work to do, for several days, so I shall not be here with you. Take care of yourself.”
            ‘I will.”

“And don’t go off on an adventure!”

Ash sighed. “Yes, mom, I know…”

But I’m not a kid! I’ve seen lots of things that aren’t nice, and I’m still me. What’s wrong with exploring?

Delia clucked to the doves that carried her chariot off into the sky as Ash groomed his Eevee.

            “Well, I hope something happens.”

Careful what you wish for. Eevee said with a yawn.

            “Right…”
