Chapter 4

Ash glanced around, not sure what he was doing. Marill squeaked in worry as he approached the pokemon. The little Zigzagoon was injured, bleeding badly, but Ash didn’t think it was dead yet.

He carefully wrapped it in his jacket and ran to the Center.

Part of Ash’s mind screamed at him. What did he think he was doing? He couldn’t allow himself to get attached, certainly not to a little raccoon that probably wouldn’t survive the night, but he’d seen Team Rocket and… he couldn’t just ignore it!

Nurse Joy watched as he burst in the door, took the Zigzagoon from him carefully, and then went into the healing room.

Ash sighed, as he looked at Marill. “I hope I did the right thing…”

I think you did, Master. Marill said confidently. Ash just blinked. He couldn’t decipher the little squeaking noises, so he smiled.

            Marill didn’t seem angry…

A few minutes later, Nurse Joy came back out.  “Well, Ash.” She said. “Your Zigzagoon should be fine.”

            “Really?” Ash asked, surprised.

“Yes. Pokemon are amazingly resilient to injury, you know… they’re so hardy. Your Zigzagoon…”

“Um, actually-.” Ash began, but Nurse Joy continued on as though she hadn’t heard him.

“You should probably let her rest from battling for a week or so, just to be on the safe side. I’m sure she’ll be glad to see you.”

Ash followed Nurse Joy into the recovery room mutely, not sure what to say. The Zigzagoon on the bed did look remarkably healthy, and whole, so he felt better.

            “Zig!” She uttered.

Ash gave a tentative smile, which the Zigzagoon returned. The boy didn’t smell like the ones who had hurt her…

Was he the one who had brought her here?

“Now then,” Joy was businesslike. “What happened to her? Those injuries didn't look like they came from normal competitive battling.”

“Team Rocket.” Ash said, unable to keep the anger out of his voice.

“What? Team Rocket here in Houen?”

“… Is that bad?” Ash ventured.

“Bad? Of course! The balance of power is already unsteady, what with Team Magma and Team Aqua squabbling all the time, battling in the streets, even! And now if Team Rocket joins the fray…” The Nurse looked rather faint. “I must inform the authorities immediately!”

She left Ash in the room with the Zigzagoon, while she went downstairs to make the call.

            Zigzagoon continued to watch Ash.

Ash stifled a yawn behind one hand. It had been a rather tiring day, and it was getting late. “Well, Zigzagoon, I’m glad you’re better.”

Zigzagoon wagged her tail. His voice was kind, even though she did not wholly understand what he was saying. Marill, who had been raised in a pet shop, knew a little more and squeaked a translation.

To Ash’s surprise, the little raccoon actually looked like it was turning color. Worried that this might be something bad, he was about to go downstairs and summon Nurse Joy to take another look at her when Marill grabbed his leg.

            “Marill!”

Zigzagoon shook her head, before she ran up to Ash’s backpack, which he had left on a convenient chair. Ash watched as she rooted through it before she found a poke ball and pressed her nose against it.

She vanished in the capture beam, much to his surprise.

“She wants to come with me?”

            Marill nodded.

Ash almost cried then and there. A pokemon wanted to come with him? It was almost like… almost like Skittle had come back…

The pain of her loss suddenly seemed less.

Maybe getting more pokémon would help…

A few minutes later, Ash decided that it was time to get dinner and some sleep, so he got himself a cheese and egg bagel sandwich at the supermarket/deli, and then showered and went to bed.

He hoped Nurse Joy wouldn’t know his father was still in Rustboro and looking for him… coming back to Petalburg to train had been a good idea.

After all, now he had a Zigzagoon!

Jacques looked over the daily news. Ash’s name hadn’t appeared in any context, so he was going to assume that no news was good news. He hoped the boy knew what he was doing.

Well, at least he had Marill to protect him…

Zigzagoon was cute, even if it was a common pokemon, Ash decided. He fell asleep that night, and had no nightmares.

He hoped he never ran into Team Rocket again! Well, he didn’t want to fight them yet.

            He wasn’t strong enough…

So he had to get Brawly’s gym badge quick!

But how could he win? Brawly’s Makuhita had really pummeled Marill when he had tried yesterday, and he wasn’t sure how much better his new Zigzagoon would fare.

Normal types would be weak against fighting moves, right?

If only Makuhita’s Bulk Up attack weren’t so powerful…

He pondered, frowning. What to do? He could try to catch more pokemon – maybe a bird?

Flying types were strong against fighting pokemon, right?

There were cute little birds around Petalburg City – quite a lot of wild flying, bug, and normal types, along with a few water-types. It shouldn’t be too hard to net a little bird. Besides, maybe…Maybe Lance was right.

He’d need a lot of strong pokémon if he wanted to take down Team Rocket…
