Chapter 3

“You’re only going to lose again! Raichu, Mega Punch!”

Pikachu dodged, using Agility. Then, she darted in for a quick attack before darting back out.

            “Thunderbolt!”
The resulting electricity blew out all the windows in the gym, and Surge fully expected it to win the match.

Lance silently thanked whoever had created pokemon that dragons only took 1/4 of the damage from electricity. Still…

Ash stood up, brushing black crispy electric dust off his clothes. After Pikachu’s many shocks, he had developed some kind of resistance.

However, Pikachu had wrapped itself in reflect for defense.

            “Now Pikachu, use Double Team!”

Pikachu copies filled the room, as Raichu attacked several, but ran through them, just clones. It was tiring visibly, breathing hard.

            “Swift!”

Little stars… once, twice, and then… one more.

Raichus had as bad defense as Pikachus had, and they had worn down her HP.

“Well, maybe you’re not such a baby after all.” Surge said. “Here’s the Thunder badge.”

Ash had just exited the gym when Team Rocket showed up.

            “Prepare for Trouble!”

            “And make it Double!”

“To protect the world from devastation!”

“To unite all peoples within our nation!”

“To denounce the evils of truth and love!”

“To extend our reach to the stars above!”

            “Jessie!”

            “James!”

“Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!”

“Surrender now or prepare to fight!”

            “Meowth, that’s right!”

            “Hand over Pikachu right now!”

Pikachu smiled. She hadn’t used any electricity in the battle against Surge, so…

            “PIKACHU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Well, there went team rocket, blasting off before they could even pull out any of their fancy gadgets. A pity? Maybe.

Ash smiled. “Way to go Pikachu!”

“… You need to work on aim.” Lance said, before she collapsed.

Ash quickly recalled her to her Great ball. “What happened?”

I think I accidentally caught Lance with my attack… the only reason she didn’t faint immediately is because dragons only take 1/4 of the damage from lightning.

“Oops.” Ash said, as he ran for the Center.

Within a few minutes, Lance was healed, and he bought a few more poke balls and potions at the mart, before setting out for the next town.

A mountain range was in the way.

So where are we going now? Lance asked.

“Celadon, for the next badge… you don’t mind, do you?”

            Mind what?

“I’m going to compete in the Indigo League.”

… That’s what just about ever trainer does.

“Yes, but I’m, well, your trainer now.”

Speaking of which, you are going to train me, right?

            “Er… yes…”

            That’s good.

Lance returned to her ball. Her five dragon team, plus her other three dragon pokemon – Kingdra, Ampharos, Charmander– had settled in nicely. She copied the image of the Indigo Plateau pokemon habitat and directly transferred it to this poke ball, but it took a while. Still, she had space to spare…

She was busy fishing – how had fish gotten into the poke ball, she didn’t’ want to know – when a tugging feeling announced Ash was calling her. She dropped the rod and reappeared next to him.

            “Genie?”

“Lance, let’s start training. See that Rattata?”

            She nodded.

            “Try a Thunderwave attack!”

Lance nodded, her wings humming, before electricity shot out of them and struck the Rattata, paralyzing it.

            “Good, now use Night Shade!”

Lance concentrated, pulling up a feeling of failure from her mind, and then turning it into waves that shot at the Rattata.

            Rattata used Tackle!

However, when it jumped at Lance, it just went through her.

Lance developed a panicky look on her face. “Genie, genie!”

“Oh no! I knew you were a ghost type, but…”

            “GENIE!”
Ash stared as Twister swept Rattata up in a cyclone, kind of like Dragon Rage, and sent it flying away.

“Urk. Now she’s angry. Lance, return!”

And it was back into the poke ball.

Lance flopped down on her bed. * So I guess the ghost-type listing wasn’t just for show… *

We can feel you. Hakuryuu said, nudging her.

            I know, Hakuryuu…

It was smart of Ash to recall her, though, she thought as she went back to fishing. She might have attacked him in her anger.

She needed time to thick this through.

Firstly. She was solid enough except when being hit by normal attacks, at least at this point. That was good.

Secondly. Ash was at least trying to train her, so she should not nag at him.

Thirdly, she wasn’t really angry with him.

Lance blinked at the trout flopping on her line, shrugged, and tossed it to Dragonair, who caught it in her teeth.

            Fishing was remarkably relaxing.

Ash waited about two hours before he let Lance out again. “I’m sorry! I’m sorry! I’m sorry!”

            I’m not mad.

            “You aren’t?”

No, now that I’ve thought about it, there’s no use reversing the past that I know of, so…

            “Hmm?”

You can make it up to me by training me to be the best ‘pokemon’ pokemon champion!

Ash grinned in relief. “All right! Let’s get to work then!”

An Oddish stuck its head out of a patch of grass.

            “Lance, use Twister!”

Twister was good with STAB as a dragon, and several other pokemon went flying away that night.

Rattata were plentiful, and they couldn’t hurt her.

            That was useful.

Three nights of camping were needed before Celadon loomed.

On the second day, Ash surprised a Weepinbell colony. They also tried to eat him. Who knew?

            “HELP!”

Pikachu was shocking bellsprout right and left, but it didn’t seem to be doing much good…

“I wish I was out of here!”

Lance blinked, granting his wish, the vines dropped him. Ash immediately threw out his Charmander, Pidgeotto, and Butterfree.

            “Flamethrower, Wing Attack, Confusion!”

That vanquished almost all of the carnivorous plants before the rest escaped. Lance helped, even though Nightshade wasn’t that good of an attack.

It was after the battle that Pidgeotto evolved into Pidgeot. She had received a giant EXP chunk all at once.

            But…

One little thing nagged Ash. He hadn’t been counting, but now he realized he was carrying _seven_ pokemon.

Why hadn’t any been sent to Oak?

            Unless…

Upon closer inspection, Dexter revealed that Ash’s pokédex contained an Override chip – able to carry more than six. Was it just a fluke?

He didn’t think so, but… in any case, he sent Oak a Bellsprout and Weepinbell.

            “Dexter, what’s Lance’s status now?”

“Level: 16. Attacks: Disable, Thunderwave, Twister, Night Shade, Confuse Ray, Dragon Rage.”

“Maybe I should teach you some TMs…”

            Lance crooked an eyebrow. “Genie?”

            “Well, right now…”

Lance nodded. I don’t have a good attack base, do I?
