Chapter 5

            “Woah…”

I have wings, so surely I can fly. Lance said, as she did a few loop-de-loops around his head.

They were in a deserted part of the forest between Celadon and Saffron; it was about five or six days later.

Angle them upwards a little more! Pidgeot instructed.

Ash once again remembered that during their last meeting at Oak’s, he had forgotten to ask about the Override chip.

            Oops.

Lance shot into the air, before diving back down and landing next to Ash. What do you think?

            “That was so cool… I wish I could fly…”

            Lance sweatdropped. “Wish granted…”

The next thing Ash knew, they were soaring through the sky hand-in-hand. It was fun while it lasted, for about an hour and a half, before the wish wore off.

            Do I… like her?

            Well… she is a pokemon, isn’t she?

I’m sorry for turning her into one though. She didn’t get mad. That’s good, no Misty-like temper…

            Do I like her?

I don’t think so… maybe as a friend, but um… not in _that_ way!

            Lance blinked. Ash?

“Oh! Sorry. I’m spacing out. What do you want for dinner?”

            I’ll be fine.

Ash nodded as he began setting up camp and heated some canned pokemon food for his pokemon.

He did try to take care of them…

Lance was cleanly eating a fish, and Ash took care not to look. It was just… well… kind of scary. If one ignored the wings, she still looked human, and seeing her eat an entire raw herring pretty cleanly was unnerving.

            Then there were the fangs.

Ash suspected those had been around before her transformation, but in any case, they were very sharp looking…

            Oh well.

Lance finished devouring the fish and smiled. I guess I’ll turn in for the night.

            “All right, return.”

Ash clipped her poke ball back onto his poke belt. What to do… what to do…

He had to contact Oak ASAP.

            “Prepare for Trouble!”

            “And make it Double!”

“To protect the world from devastation!”

“To unite all peoples within our nation!”

“To denounce the evils of truth and love!”

“To extend our reach to the stars above!”

            “Jessie!”

            “James!”

“Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!”

“Surrender now or prepare to fight!”

            “Meowth, that’s right!”

            Ash stared up… and up… and up…

            What was that thing?

The robot resembled an onix, coated with rubber. In an instant, it had leaped down and wrapped itself around Pikachu, before wheels appeared out of the bottom and it began running away.

“Oh no you don’t! Pidgeot, go!” Ash said, jumping on his bird and taking chase. “Come back here!”

Pikachu struggled in the coils, but could not move.

“Bulbasaur, I choose you! Use Razor Leaf!”

The leaves simply bounced off the rubber. Frustrated, Ash sent out Charmander with an order for Flamethrower, trying to melt the robot.

            “PIKACHU!!!!!!!!!”

Lightning bounced off the onix, reflecting into the air, and hit Pidgeot, sending her plummeting to the ground.

Ash struggled to his feet. Charmander had a giant bump on his head and surrendered to KO status.

“Haha, twerp, looks like you’re out of luck!” Jessie laughed.

Ash shrugged, switching for Butterfree. “Butterfree, use your Whirlwind attack!” The Pokebot was too heavy to be blown away, but it was spun around in place.

            Butterfree smiled. This works!

            “Now, use Confusion!”

Meowth began to scratch randomly at the robot, sending shards of rubber flying everywhere.

“Hey! What are you doing?” Jessie demanded. “Arbok, go!”

Butterfree stopped the Whirlwind and nailed Arbok with Psybeam when it got close.

“Oh no! Weezing, I choose you!”

Weezing self-destructed, sending TR – with Pikachu in tow – blasting off again. Ash stared in disbelief.

            No choice then…

He tossed Lance’s poke ball forwards, as the genie emerged.

“Lance, I wish all my pokemon were healed back to full health.”

She nodded, as a yellow glow began to emit from her body. Ash looked surprised, since her power had always been blue before.

In an instant, his pokemon were healed.

“Thanks, Lance. Now we need to go rescue pikachu. But I don’t want anyone to see you like this…”

Lance concentrated, before her wings vanished and her clothes changed into her normal black bodysuit. “Done.”

“Okay, I wish we were where Pikachu was.”

A flash of light later, they had teleported off.

            It was… dark.

It also looked kind of familiar.

            “Boss! We finally caught Pikachu!”

Apparently they were in… Er, actually, they were on top of a bookshelf in the darkened portion of an office.

A pikachu in a jar rested on the desk.

“So you two screw-ups finally caught this Pikachu. Excellent! Very well, dismissed…”

The trio exited while Giovanni looked at the Pikachu.

            Pikachu glared back.

“Don’t bother, it’s not you I’m interested in. I’m sure your trainer will be here to rescue you, and he’ll have his genie with him.”

Ash and Lance both tensed. How did he know?

“You’re surprised? Why wouldn’t I want to keep tabs on my dear daughter? Oak was more than happy to fax me the records once I told him why I wanted them. I even have the records to prove it…”

There was a sudden burst of light as Lance jumped off the bookshelf and seemed intent on throttling the life out of Giovanni. Ash hurriedly grabbed Pikachu’s jar, broke it, and released her.

Pikachu immediately nailed both of them with a Thunderwave. Ash caught Lance, despite her glare.

Giovanni slowly pulled himself to his feet.

Neither of them had been much affected by the Thunderwave. Giovanni sighed.

“I know we haven’t seen each other in five years, but surely…”

“Genie! Genie! Genie, genie, genie!” Lance yelled.

Ash blinked, wondering why she had reverted back to pokemon speech. What was going on?

            Giovanni was Lance’s father?

            What in the world?

< Lance, please. Listen to me explain. I never meant to… >

< Never meant to knock up my mother and have me, and then keep me in Team rocket for nine years until I escaped? > Lance shot back.

            < How did you? >

< You were the person who forced me to cast the illusion, didn’t you? I knew there was a reason… >

< Sharp as ever, my girl. >

< The Surge has already started! That’s why you let me go! You knew I’d evolve eventually! >

            < Clever, clever… >

            < And you too… ground, isn’t it? >

When in the world had Lance learned telepathy? He had never known! It would have been so much more convenient.

< I vowed not to use the powers you forced upon me, but now I have no choice. >

            < Can’t we talk this over? >

< Fine, > the genie did not look convinced. < But you’d better come clean… one wish and I’ll be rid of you. >

            Giovanni sighed.

“Where do I begin? It’s not a hard story. I loved your mother but she died in childbirth, so I decided to raise you as my own.”

< Somewhere along the line you slipped up. >

“Yes, I admit it. I wanted you to become the next leader of team rocket, so all your waking time was taken learning how to run the organization…”

            < I was angry. >

“You didn’t realize what I was doing until you were nine. Then, you somehow escaped… and after that, well, I never saw you again… until now.”

Phantomness: Everyone thinks Giovanni is Ash’s father. Why not Lance?

Lance: I don’t look like him! In the manga we’re trying to kill each other over a boiling volcano!
Ash: But he didn’t kill you

Lance: *sweatdrop*
