Chapter 6

            “So what’s the Surge?”

< The Surge is an event that takes place about once every 300 years, when humans begin changing into pokemon. > Giovanni explained.

Lance was busy counting all the ugly brown tiles on the floor. < You haven’t changed the décor since I left. >

            “Too busy doing other things.”

< Like trying to rule the world? > Lance asked sarcastically.

            “Well…”

“I have a question.” Ash interrupted. “Giovanni, you’re a gym leader, right?”

            “Yes.”

“Why do you run Team Rocket?”

            “My mother did before me.”

            “… Oh.”

“Anyways, what I really want to ask is, I have a pokédex override chip and I don’t know how it got there.”

“… Odd.” Giovanni commented. “My scientists developed one, but they’re given out to only the best of our members. You didn’t find it, did you?”

            “No.”

            “Any insights, daughter dear?”

< Quit that, it’s annoying. > Lance said. < And no, I don’t think Ash wished for it. > She continued floating.

“So who did you tell besides Oak that you were transformed?”

< Oak told Agatha, so now she’s standing in as Champion. You’ve got my records since you _are_ my biological father. Um… hold on, Drake found out somehow but I beat the ___ out of him… >

            < Drake? I didn’t tell him. >

“Well, neither did I. Do you think Bill might have?”

            < Why? >

The three of them sat in the ruins of Giovanni’s office and racked their brains for a solution.

“Wish I knew…” Ash muttered softly.

“Genie.” Lance smirked, and then what looked like a T.V. screen flashed into existence in front of their faces.

            “Woah!”

On screen, Drake was talking to Professor Oak.

“Look. I heard from Agatha that she’s taken over as Champion. What happened to Lance? Is he dead?”

            “Er, not exactly.” Oak said.

“Not exactly? Then is he in a coma or something?”

            “No…”

“What injuries could take him out of his position? He didn’t lose a battle, did he? That’d be nice.”

            “No.”

            “So what happened?”

That was when Bill walked in. “Say, Oak, did you actually tell Ash you gave him the override chip for Lance?”

            “No…”

“What? Now I’m confused. Why would you need an override chip for a person?”

“… You explain.” Oak said, rubbing his forehead as a migraine came on, before he beat a retreat.

            And so Bill did.

Drake’s expression flickered through several interesting colors, but in the end, he said, “So Lance is a female genie?”

“Yes. Keep this quiet, will you?”

“Oh, sure I will.” Drake said, before Dragonite and he exited. And that was the end of the slideshow.

Lance took a few deep breaths, blinking away dizzy spots. * I wonder why that wish was so hard… *

            “You okay, Lance?”

            “Genie.”

“What’d she say? Why is she talking like that?”

“You know, Giovanni, I think Lance might be a bit upset with you.” Ash said, before he recalled her to her poke ball. “This wasn’t a good time to have a reunion, if you know what I mean.”

            Giovanni nodded.

“Giovanni, you run team rocket, so you must have scientists. Is there a way to change her back?”

            “No, we haven’t found a way yet…”

Ash nodded. “I guess I’ll be going now. I only wanted Pikachu anyways.”

Giovanni waved a hand. “Keep it. And take care of her for me? I swear I will not try to steal her from you.” * Perhaps you’ll be good for her… I wasn’t a good father in either case… *

A bit surprised, Ash nodded, and then exited the gym.

Something was up, but he didn’t know yet. Oh well…

            Giovanni sighed.

No matter what, Lance was still angry with him. It was his fault though.

            “Sir.”

            He waved the scientist in.

“We’ve received rumors that Team Aqua and Team Magma may be trying to create pokemon-type humans as well.”

            “I know.”

            “Should we…”

“No. We’re not going to play god. It costs too much.”

The scientist nodded, not daring to question the Boss’s orders, though he did wonder.

            Why?

Once inside her home, Lance closed her eyes and let the energy rejuvenator she had created heal her.

            Nice…

It was nice having her power to utilize inside. She was busy decorating the top of the ball with star-spangled night when she felt a tug and was released.

Looking around, the sight was Saffron City.

“Lance, I’m going to fight Sabrina soon. Do you know anything about her?”

Lance thought. No one has gotten a gym badge from her in years…

“What? Then how do they compete in the pokemon league?”

There are two other gyms. Candice with Force Badge in Lavender, and I believe… Sylvester in Seafoam with the Whirlpool badge…

Ash nodded. “Okay.” Pidgeot would probably be his best bet against Sabrina… but he’d try the gym.

He didn’t realize she would have junior trainers… a lot of junior trainers… by the time they reached Sabrina, Pidgeot looked exhausted.

            Oh dear.

< So you wish to challenge me for a Marsh badge? Very well, but if you lose you have to stay here and play with me! >

There was a clank as six of Ash’s poke balls dropped down, locked.

            “What?!”

< It’s no fun if our pokemon fight! Let’s go! > The doll Sabrina was holding giggled, as Sabrina floated towards Ash, glowing with psychic power.

Ash panicked, ran, and tripped. Lance’s great ball dropped out and released her.

            “HELP!!!!”

Lance sighed as she used Night Shade on Sabrina, but it wasn’t very effective.

“Urk. Lance, try a Disable attack!”

Lance nodded, eyes flaring blue as Sabrina was suddenly immobilized.

            “Good… Thunderwave!”

That further disabled her motility. However, Sabrina looked far from giving up. Ash was about to order a Dragon Rage attack, when a voice called for him to stop.

It was a man in a battered green jacket and yellow baseball cap.

            “Who are you?”

            “Sabrina’s father.”

“Oh! Um… well, she challenged me…”

“Yes, I know. I saw the whole thing. You can have the Marsh badge.”

            “Okay…”

After Ash had left, Sabrina’s father sighed.

            What to do?

So the Surge was starting again… he’d better keep more than two eyes on Sabrina, because that might make her a target of Team Rocket’s capture attempts… or even one of the newer teams.

            Why was life so complicated?

“So people are now turning into pokemon?”

Lance shook her head. Only upon stone or evolution items… it’s not very common though, so don’t worry.

Ash sighed. He didn’t know what to do, but oh well…

At least he had Lance to keep him company… even if she was a pokemon.

They stared at the moon together that night.

He hoped he wouldn’t run into any more human pokemon though. Wasn’t sure if he could deal with it…
