Chapter 2

The next morning, Ash she took her fishing rod and bait out to the stream that ran between Pallet and Viridian. Maybe she could fish up a water pokemon or two. They were only within two miles of Viridian now, if the signpost was correct.

At the water’s edge, Ash spotted another girl.

            “Hi!”
“Hey! This is my private fishing spot! Get lost!” The irate ugly orange-haired, flat-chested girl snapped.

“Well excuse me, but I didn’t see your name on it.” Ashline retorted.

            “Why you!”

“What? It’s true, isn’t it?” Ash asked, as she sat down by the water a good ten yards away, baited her hook, and threw out her line.

“Hmph! You’re so ugly you’ll scare all the fish away.”

            “I resent that!”

“Oh yeah? Let’s settle this with a one-on-one battle! If I win, I get all your pokemon and equipment!”
“You’re on!” Ashline’s temper flared. She wouldn’t lose.

            “Great! Misty chooses Staryu!”

            “Ekans, I choose you!”

The purple snake was well rested after a night and some good food as she stretched and appeared, ready for battle.

            “Staryu, use Tackle!”

“Ekans, wait for it to get close and then Bite!”

Ekans nodded. As Staryu spun closer, she found a spot not quite covered by the spinning motion and chomped. Hard.

            OW!!! The star shrieked.

Seeing a reaction, Ekans bit it again.

Staryu staggered in pain, spots flaring in its field of vision. Misty blinked. “Staryu, what are you waiting for? Tackle now!”

As Staryu prepared to charge, Ekans let go.

Wind rushed by the area as the Staryu charged, only to receive Acid in its ‘face’. Blindly blinking, it was vulnerable. Ekans took full advantage as she took careful aim this time and bit down hard.

Staryu fainted from the pain. Besides, dark beat psychic, right?

            Misty’s eyes flashed. “No way!”

“I won, didn’t I? Now hand over your pokemon like you promised.”

“Oh yeah? Stealing pokemon is against the law, sucker!” Misty pulled down her eyelid. “So there-eek!”

While she was taunting, Ashline had come up next to her and shoved, hard, but not before Ekans’ Glare attack had paralyzed Misty. Misty fell into the water with a splash and began sinking.

Seeing the struggling human girl, or at least trying to struggle since she was paralyzed human girl, several Gyarados swam up, feeling hungry.

“Sayonara, Misty!” Ashline said, as she put Misty’s poke balls and supplies in her own backpack. “It’s your own fault for welshing on the bet!”

            “Now let’s see what I got…”

Ekans watched as Ash removed a Full Restore. “Ah… this’ll be good.” Pidgey was released and the medicine applied, and then Ashline turned to the poke balls.

            “Staryu… Starmie… and Goldeen… okay! I’ll trade the Staryu and Goldeen off…”

Taking the red bike that was also lying by the stream, Ash biked on to Viridian, while Pidgey battled the few Rattata that had shown up along the way. Not bad, not bad at all, what had happened!

It served the girl right anyways!

At the Pokemon Center in Viridian, Ash healed her team – now she had *five* pokemon, not two!

            But… hmm…

A sudden solution to pokemon theft presented itself.

“I wonder if the EX ball will work on you two…” Ash said, up in her room after she had collected her pokemon from Nurse Joy.

It would save her the trouble of explaining how she had gotten Misty’s pokemon. With a nod, Ashline took out the experimental poke ball and threw it at Staryu.

The ball flashed the number 222 before the ball spit out a Corsola.

            “Interesting.” Ash said, re-capturing the former Staryu. “Well, now I have a rock/water, a water/psychic, a poison, a flying/normal…”

She decided to do the same to goldeen.

This time, 56 popped up and a Mankey was released.

“Well, that’s that!” Ashline said. “Let’s go out and train!”

Maybe it wasn’t the most balanced team, but it was better than all one type…

Misty woke up with a throbbing headache.

“That was quite careless of you, little sister.” A voice said.

            “D-daisy?”

“Not likely. You think those three harlots at the gym would care what happened to you?” Laughter sounded.

            “Dad?”

“That bump on the head must be making you delusional. Our father’s dead, been dead for years, remember?”

            “Lance?”

“None other, *little sister*.” The leader of the Elite Four said. He looked at her sideways, golden eyes sharp. “So tell me, why were you nearly about to become a Gyarados dinner?”

            “You saved me?”

            “Who else?”

“I…” It would make sense though. Rumor held that Lance could control wild dragon pokemon.

Misty wouldn’t doubt it. She’d seen it in action before. Of course, Lance was… slightly insane, but he had just saved her life.

Lance was currently grooming his purring Gyarados.

“You are going to answer eventually, right?”

“It was… oh! I remember! There was a girl trainer! She pushed me into the water!”

            “And why would that be?”

            “Er…” Misty blushed and looked down. “I… um… there…”

“You made a bet and didn’t carry out the requirements once you lost, and that’s why you’re poke-less and penniless now.”

            “Nani? How did you know?”

“I guessed right.” Lance said simply. Misty realized that she had just given away her entire story.

            “EEP!”

            “I’d assume that’s why you’re poke-less right now.”

            “AH! Really?”

“Yes…” Lance drawled. “I know your seel is still at home, but aside from that, where *are* the rest of your pokemon?”

            “Oh no! They got stolen!”

While Misty ranted, Lance went to his computer and ran a search through the trainer database, looking for the missing pokemon.

“It’s got to be in here somewhere…”
