Chapter 8

Ashline skipped off to Vermillion cheerfully.

Lance put another video in, after having taken a half hour break to rest his eyes. * This is more complicated than I originally presumed… *

He would find a way to her heart though! Somehow…

Somewhere, somehow, in some way, I won’t lose him – um, her this time around. I promise…

He had to keep it.

“Well, who are you?”

“I’m A.J. Matthews! And you?”

“I’m Ashline Ketchum, new trainer.”

“So, want a match?”

“For what?”

“My badge of course!”

Ashline blinked. “You’re a gym leader?”

“Of course I am! Haven’t you heard of me?”

“Not really…”

A.J. scowled. “Never mind.”

“Bye.” Ashline walked on. * Strange guy… *

            Wild Pidgey appeared!
Ashline threw the EX poke ball at it. She hadn’t used it in a while, but might as well test…

            Does it still work?

Ashline closed her eyes and prayed.

When the ball stopped blinking, Ash realized that it had… to some extent.

She was now the proud owner of a Hoothoot, whatever that was…

It was still a bird, but not a Pidgey. Oh well! Better than nothing! Ashline caught three more pidgeys that day.

            Well, they were initially Pidgey.

            One became a Dodrio.

            Another became a Wingull.

And the last was… an Umbreon? Lucky!

So that made her current roster Umbreon, Arbok, Mankey, Corsola, Starmie, and Pidgeotto. Not the best, but not the worst either. *hopefully not the worst… *

            She’d work on it.

            A Dark, Poison, Fighting, Rock/Water, Water/Psychic, and Flying/Normal.

She would switch Mankey off later. Maybe Starmie too, if it still remembered Misty, which Ashline highly doubted.

She made sure of the memory wipe…

            What could she use instead?

“Mostly water and flying.” Oak was busy cataloguing Ashline’s captures. “Oh well, at least she’s caught fifteen or so for the pokedex.”

            Gary yawned. “Whatever.”

“Gary! You should be ashamed of yourself!”

            “Why?”

            “Well, you’re rivals!”

“Not all the time… besides, I’m bored. What’s the point of becoming a Master?”

            “G-Gary?”

            Blue eyes opened.

“AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! You’re not Gary! Venusaur, use Vine Whip!”

“So observant.” Duplica grinned. “Prepare to die, Professor!”

A death-cry was heard and then there was silence…

Lance put in yet another video.

            “I need eighteen poke balls.”

The store clerk blinked. “That many? Are you chasing a legendary or something?”

            ‘No, if I was I’d need a lot more…”

“Suit yourself kid.” Ashline paid and then waved goodbye.

            The EX ball was powerful!

That afternoon, she caught four Diglett. One stayed a Diglett. The other three didn’t. One became a Bellsprout, another a Hitmonlee, and the third, a Magikarp. But Magikarp evolved into Gyarados, so it wasn’t too useless…

            Right!

What puzzled Ash, though, was that when she tried to send them to Oak’s, the pokedex backfired.

She found a small pile of pokeballs (all hers) by her feet.

            “What the?”

The only time the trainers would get all their pokemon was… oh no! The lab was in danger! So was her house then!

Fearing danger in Pallet, Ashline released Pidgey and flew back.

She was met with the burning remains of Oak’s research Center. Her house, being close, had also caught on fire with a multitude of others.

            “Oh no!”

Ashline quickly released all her water pokemon and ordered Water Gun or Hydro Pump attacks. A pity it was too little, too late…

Her fake mother had perished as well. No matter, really…

            So the house was gone…

Ashline watched the ashes of her house as she cried. What was left?

            Her bank account…

But what would she do now?

            Oh, it was so confusing…

Ashline sighed. She’d think about it later.

For now, she just wanted to cry…

            Warm arms wrapped around her.

            “Daddy?” She whispered. * So warm… *

            Please… let it be true…

My parents aren’t dead, are they?

“I’m not…” Lance whispered. “But I’ll take care of you. I promise.”

            She cried.
