Chapter 6: Nice to have friends in high places

            “So I guessed right.”

It was perhaps four days later. Lance was kneeling next to a small statue of Lugia and communing with the legendary.

            < Yes, Chosen. >

            “Why?” < Why? >

< Well… I don’t think Honou just knocked up the woman because he found her attractive, but I honestly have no idea. My best guess is because… in the future, the world will need a hero. >

            < A… hero? >

< And unfortunately, the way the wheel spins this time around, it had to be either his child, or my child, or Serebii’s… >

            < I see… >

< No. I understand your confusion. > He felt Lugia smiling in his mind. < After all, you are _my_ child. >

            Lance froze, golden eyes wide. < … > * What? *

            It couldn’t be!
Actually, current circumstances notwithstanding, his mother had died in childbirth and no one knew who his father was but!

Could it… Did that explain his visions then? The strange fractured dreams of destruction and healing that repeated over and over.

His thirst for power… and the power that supplied him…

            Was it because of this?

< Yes. You are mine. > Lugia said with satisfaction. < I did not know of Honou’s plans, but your mother was my choice. That is why you are my Dragon Master. Child. >

Seductive warmth beckoned, and Lance stepped into it without a backwards glance. Fanfare and the clash of arms thrummed in his heart as he drowned.

Lugia smiled as the boy appeared in Whirl Islands. He’d return him before tomorrow and the other boy woke up, but tonight, there was a lot of work to do! To make it simpler, Lugia took human form, picked up a brush and silver ink, and got to work.

Lance woke up the next morning feeling… power. Yes. Power was nice. It shimmered and glowed and flowed in his eyes and under his skin and it was so pretty…

            “Wake up!”

He opened his eyes lazily, meeting red. “Morning, Red.”

            Ash grinned. “You remembered!”

            “What?”

“My name! My name! I hate being called Ash! You kept calling me Ash yesterday but today you remembered!”

            “… I see…”

“Your eyes are so pretty!” Ash squealed.

            … My eyes?

Lance looked in the mirror, gaping. Okay. So. His golden eyes were now… silver. No, they weren’t. They kept changing color. Blue, gold, silver…

And his hair… well, the gold and silver streaks looked nice. * But isn’t this kind of obvious that… I’m a legendary’s child? *

Oh well. Maybe it pays to advertise.

His eyes settled on silvery gold, electrum, as he nodded and another day began.

            *Crash*

Lance looked severely ticked off, as the roof of his cabin was suddenly, irrevocably, gone. “What was that?”

Ash stumbled out of the bathroom with a towel wrapped around his waist and Ninetails behind him. “It wasn’t my fault!”

“I know.” Lance looked up through the hole and spotted what looked like a helicopter with a red ‘R’ painted on the side.

            “Prepare for Trouble!”

            “And make it Double!”

“To protect the world from devastation!”

“To unite all people within our nation!”

“To denounce the evils of truth and love!”

“To extend our reach to the stars above!”

            “Jessie!”

            “James!”

“Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light!”

“Surrender now or prepare to fight!”

            “Meowth, that’s right!”

            “Hey, it’s the runt!”

“Good! Now we can get Pikachu! Arbok, go!”

            “Wheezing, go!”

“I don’t even have pikachu!” Ash complained. “Ninetails, use Flamethrower!” Arbok went up crispy and black.

            “Wheezing, use Sludge!”

Lance’s eyes glowed as a Hyper Beam smacked Wheezing back out through the hole in the roof. He was not in a good mood. Part of it was the fact that the omelet he had been eating for breakfast when the roof imploded was now inedible…

Another part was that his house had been wrecked.

“Get out of my house!” Lance cried in exasperation.

“Never!” Jessie pulled out – a gun?

Bullets began bouncing off the walls while the two Masters respectively stayed under their protective shields. It took a while for them to run out of ammunition, but it was done.

             “Dragon Rage!”

The two went blasting off as Lance attacked. Considering his level of anger, that was a pretty strong blow.

Ash looked down at himself and quickly decided to put some clothes on.

Lance tossed out the inedible food and tried to figure out what to do. His house was currently a mess…

            < Father? Any ideas? >

Lugia’s laughter ran out in his mind. < Ah, how intriguing… >

< My house has been utterly destroyed. Team Rocket is so annoying! Can I come live in Whirl Islands with you? >

< You could, I suppose. But Ash is a fire Master. He’d be quite uncomfortable here, being as we’re underwater.... >

< Right. > Lance considered. < Well, do you think Honou will let us crash with him? > Even though he didn’t quite relish the thought of living in a tower…

< No harm asking, child. Go ahead and try. >

Honou was quite surprised at the request, and also at the reason behind it. However, he accepted, since Ash *was* his child.
The two moved into Tin Tower and training continued.
