Chapter 7: Power doesn’t cure mental illness

“Why was Team Rocket attacking you?” Lance asked.

Ash sighed. “When I first started my journey, my starter pokemon was a Pikachu. They thought it was very powerful so they chased me around trying to capture it. I haven’t seen them since I won the Orange League though, so I have no idea how they found me.”

“Maybe Team Rocket has a few masters in its ranks…” Lance said thoughtfully.

            “Maybe.”

            “So what now?”

“I don’t know.” Ash said. He did feel stronger, but also wary… “Lance. Something will happen in the future that will require my help, right?”

            “Hai.”

“I should have known. After al, I was the Chosen One in the Shamouti prophecy. Why can’t I be normal?”

            “You aren’t.” Lance said simply.

            “What do you mean?”

“You’re not normal, and neither am I.”

            “What…”

Lance concentrated, feeling the shimmering of power inside of him grow stronger. There was a soft sliding sound, and then his wings appeared.

Ash stared in disbelief. Soft, white feathers trailed from Lance’s shoulders. He looked like an angel.

            “Kirei…”

“You can do it too, Ash. Just reach for the fire in you.” Shrugging, Ash did…

And gaped when rainbow-colored feathers revealed themselves.

            “You see?”

            “… How?”

            “We’re both legendary children…”

            “No way!”

“Yes way… Honou is your father and Lugia’s mine.”

It made sense in an odd way, Ash thought. But… wow…

            “Shall we take a flight?”

Ash’s eyes lit up as he took Lance’s hands and they flew. Wow…

            So nice…

No wonder he had wanted to fly! His father was a bird!
No charizard bonding needed this way either…

            It was nice…

Time passed swiftly, as it must, and they grew older.

Nothing was out of the ordinary yet…

            “Let me go!”

“Not until you tell us where Lance is.”

“I don’t know!” Ash struggled against the bonds that held him fast, not sure what element they were made out of, but they were powerful! He couldn’t melt them with his fire either, even though he had tried…

Giovanni sighed. “He’s being difficult, isn’t he? Give him the neural stimulant.”

            “NOOOOOOOOO!”

Ash blacked out as the drug took control.

            “Well, where is Lance?”

“Whirl Islands.” The drugged trainer choked out.

“Take him away, we don’t need him any longer.” Giovanni laughed.

Ash woke up perhaps an hour later in a cell.

            “Why’d I tell? I thought I was stronger than that…”

They’d taken all of his pokemon. There was nothing left…

With a shudder, Ash pulled his necklace out from underneath his shirt. It was just a gold locket with a picture of his mother, but…

Focusing his powers, the metal melted and he forged it into a tiny, sharp sliver of gold, not pretty, but useful for this task, before he slit his wrists.

            Gomen nasai, Lance… I betrayed you…

            Somewhere else…

Lance sighed as he and Lugia closed down the viewing portal.

< Ash can’t die, luckily. Honou’s a phoenix, and they get reborn. However, when the rebirth process does happen, he’ll be at Tin Tower. >

            < Excellent. >

< It’ll get him out of TR Headquarters, luckily, but… >

< Are there side effects? >

            < Not quite… >

< Still, I hadn’t quite expected a reaction like that. > Lance frowned. * It wasn’t Ash’s fault he got kidnapped and drugged. *

Why would the child resort to such tactics? It couldn’t possibly be a plea for attention…

            Confusing.

            Ash woke up.

He did not understand why he was still alive and unharmed. Honou quickly put him straight, and also lectured on the evils of stupidity.

You idiot child of mine! If you hadn’t been a phoenix you would have died! And would that have solved the problem? No! Why did you have to be so stupid!

Ash meekly did not say anything.

Well? What do you have to say for yourself?

            “I’m sorry…”

Honou puffed out a wall of flame, but Ash was unharmed. The legendary just needed to blow off a lot of steam.

Being a parent was so unnerving…

That was why he had left Ash’s mother to care for the child, but she had stupidly tried poison mastery when he was two and died in the attempt.

            Foolish woman.

He’d found Delia for Ash as a foster parent. She truly loved him, and he appreciated the single woman’s sincere efforts.

Blaine kept an eye on Ash as well. Blaine didn’t know he was the father though.

            No matter.

So while Honou lectured Ash, Lugia and Lance put their plan in motion. First, though, they had to evacuate Whirl Islands.

< The exterior may be destroyed but the dragon shrine will remain. It will never fall. >

Lance nodded as he finished putting up the seals. Then, the two of them fled. By the time the rockets got there, the caves were completely empty…
