Chapter 11 – Harry

I’m in shock. McGonagall didn’t expel me after all! She thinks I’m good enough to play on Gryffindor’s team as Seeker! This is a dream come true! I almost have to pinch myself to make sure I’m not dreaming…

Yuki looks puzzled when I tell him. Ron looks like he’s just won the lottery. I forgot, Yuki’s muggle-born like me… so he wouldn’t know. I have to keep this a secret though, until the first game, otherwise people will complain about the unfair rule bending in my favor. Still, it’s probably smart to keep my mouth shut.

Shoot. Malfoy’s walking over here. Doesn’t he have anything to do besides needle me? I suppose not…

What on earth is a Wizard’s duel?

Ron’s just volunteered to be my second. This is going a bit too fast for me. And Yuki offered to come along too. That means Malfoy will bring Crabbe and Goyle…

I wait until they leave before I ask. “What exactly is a wizards duel?”

“You know, with wands and you shoot attacks at each other.” Ron says.

“Can people die?” I’m starting to feel a sinking in my stomach. I hope not!

“Only officially. Right now you don’t really know any attack spells and neither does he.” This doesn’t make me feel better though.

“What if my wand doesn’t work?”

“Kick him between the legs.” That’s Yuki. “That’ll take him down. I’ve tried it before. Or at least then you can make a run for it. It might be cheap, but it works.”

            Ron nods seriously.

            What have I gotten into?

A cough interrupts us. Hermione Granger was eavesdropping on us, that busybody! Well, this is bad, she’ll probably stop us from going. Doesn’t she know anything about wizard’s honor? Girls! So annoying…

Yuki sighs and then mutters something under his breath, but I can’t catch it. Ron seems to hear though.

            “It’s nothing like that!”

            “What’d he say?”

Hermione’s walked off, so Ron feels it’s safe to talk. “Yuki said to be careful of hating a girl, you might fall in love with her. After all, love and hate are separated only by a thin line…”

That’s interesting! “So do you like Hermione?” I can’t help teasing Ron.

            “No!”

He’s not blushing, so he must be telling the truth.

Ron’s not about to give up so easily, though, and he want revenge. He turns to Yuki. “So you’ve had firsthand experience with that?”

“Hn. Girls are untrustworthy. Don’t ever be nice to them.” He says coldly. “They don’t ever repay favors.”

Or is that the reason he ran away?

Pansy actually looks sympathetic at Yuki, but there’s a weird gleam in her eye. She can’t be… no, it can’t be! We’re only eleven!

She’s not seriously thinking about hitting on him?

Girls are weird. I think I’ve made my point.

It’s pretty late, and I’m yawning. It’s so dusty in the library… Madame Pince checks her watch and announces that it’s nine-thirty and we ought to be getting back to our dorms, so Ron and I leave. Yuki pauses to check out a book.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look interesting. It’s called Mages – fact or fantasy?

            “What are mages?”

“Supposedly, they’re some type of magical creature.”

            “Ah…”

“Wish you could shield, but we’re not learning that until fourth I think.” Ron sighs. “Try your best, Harry.”

I’m feeling nervous but I have to prove to Malfoy that blood’s not everything so I’ll go. Plus, what can happen?

Neville’s back from the hospital wing and he looks like he’s in pain even though his arm’s fine. He forgot the password though, so we told him again. Whoever comes up with these? Pig Snout? At least he’s not hurt anymore… Whatever potion Pomfrey used to heal him must have stung or something… he still looks sick. In any case, I’m half-asleep. Maybe a quick rest now…

Ron’s been reading about curses and counter-curses all afternoon to try and help, but I don’t think it did much good. They’ve started to blur in my mind…

I brush my teeth and then go up to bed. Yuki’s still down on the common room his head buried in the book he borrowed. I wonder what he’s interested in magical creatures for. Maybe he is one?

That might explain something… or who knows? He said he didn’t know his father. So maybe his father’s not a wizard, but a mage?

Yawn… maybe I’ll just a little nap now, so I’ll be fresh when I face against Malfoy… I wake up to find Ron shaking me, the curtains open. The moon’s half-full, shining in the window. Odd angle. What time is it?

“Did you forget? It’s eleven forty-five we can’t miss it!”

I fumble for my glasses and stick them on my face, and then follow him out. Yuki gets up from his seat silently, and then points to a sleeping Hermione Granger on another chair, heavy book in arm.

“What’d you do? Put her to sleep?”

Yuki shakes his head. “She fell asleep while she was studying. I guess she overworked herself.”

“Idiot.” Ron grins, but I’m relieved. No one will be following us then…

We sneak down the halls to the trophy room. It’s dark there, but there sure are a lot of trophies in this place… if I weren’t so tense I might have time to admire all the pretty gold and gilt, but right now, I’m too scared Malfoy’s going to jump me.

I wonder where Malfoy is. It’s eleven-fifty eight and he’s still not here.

            Footsteps!

Yuki puts a finger on his lips as he takes a quick peek outside. He comes back, shaking his head.

            “Not Malfoy?” Ron asks.

            “Filch.” Yuki says grimly.

“What are we going to do! He’ll find us!”

            “No he won’t…”

            “Hmm? You have a plan?”

            He nods. “Illusion…”

The ring on his finger flashes bluish silver for a second, and then Yuki walks out. Ron and I follow. There’s Filch and Miss Norris all right.

“You trying to get us all expelled?” Ron sounds furious. My ear!

I’m about to shut him up, because if he talks that loud Filch will hear us for sure, but he doesn’t see us, or hear us, not even when we walk past him and pass right next to him. It’s only… a few inches between him and us, but he doesn’t notice.

Yuki gives that odd smile/frown and leads us back to the common room. No one sees us, not even Peeves, who was lurking just outside the portrait. But how did he do it?

I’d ask for an explanation, but I’m too tired, so now it’s time to sleep… I’ll ask tomorrow…

Oh, and a Sakura is a cherry blossom in Japanese. Nothing important then, I guess Yuki’s Japanese. That’s where the accent is from.
