Chapter 36 – Harry

            No.

They can’t close Hogwarts! They can’t! I’ll be sent back to the Dursleys! They’ll kill me! Oh my God!

What am I going to do?

I’m somewhat aware as we leave the Headmaster’s office, but afterwards, when we somehow make it back to the dorm – everyone’s glaring at us, as if we were the ones who killed Justin-! Oh, it’s not fair…

“… Working for the dark lord…”

            “Only way to survive…”

            “Slimy snake…”

            “Traitor…”

“… I heard that he works for You-Know-Who…”

“… How else did he live?”

“Don’t mind them.” Yuki says, as we return to our dormitory. “I’ll figure something out…”

He looks like he’s concentrating really hard, and suddenly… something happens. We’re back inside a black-and-white world. What’s going on?

            “Yuki!”

He looks up sharply. “Harry? What are you doing here?”

            “Yuki! I don’t know… where are we?”

“In the past, when the Chamber of Secrets was opened the last time,” He says shortly. We walk along corridors as a boy walks before us.

I can understand what he’s saying!

Speak to me, Salazar Slytherin, greatest of the Hogwarts four…

Oh no. That is a giant snake! Is that what’s been going around killing people? But then someone must be controlling it!

Luckily, the snake just slithers through us, like we’re ghosts… but as we follow, we see two girls fall…

Well, that’s proof right there then.

With a flash we’re suddenly back on our beds. No one seems to have noticed we were gone.

“What kind of spell was that, Yuki?”

“Eastern magic from my mother’s side.” He says

“It’s cool… and now we have proof. Let’s go find Professor Dumbledore.”

            “Yes, let’s…”

We race out of the dorm and quickly tell Professor Dumbledore the story. However, he doesn’t believe us!

“Now boys, I know you’re excited, but that’s no reason to lie.”

“But I’m not lying!” I protest.

            Yuki just glares at Dumbledore.

What are we going to do? Hunt down the monster ourselves? We have to – otherwise, no more Hogwarts!

            How can he not listen?

“Do you remember where it is?”

I nod. We watched the memory together. “I’m suddenly glad I can speak Parseltongue now.”

            Yuki smiles mysteriously. “Yes…”

We walk into a girl’s bathroom on the second floor, and I open the tap… then we go inside, hoping everything will work…

Sure enough, it’s a mess of pipes down here, but there’s the chamber…

            And there’s the snake…

It’s sleeping, so I feel bad. Do we really have to kill it? But it’s huge! I can’t keep it as a pet…

I look at Yuki. “Do you…?”

“Little.” He says in response, and suddenly the basilisk has shrunk to the size of… well, it’s only a foot long now. Just like what he did to the dragon last year…

“Great,” I say in relief, as Coral slithers out of my robe to take a good look at this stranger. Soon, the two snakes are chatting away and we leave the Chamber.

            Now there’s only one question.

            Who opened it?

A week later, Lockhart is bragging that he defeated the monster in class and I’m getting annoyed. Coral and Crystal – that’s the basilisk’s name – are both curled up in my book bag, listening.

“This man is an idiot.” She hisses.

            “I know, Coral.”

Crystal opens her eyes. “Can I eat him?”

I’m about to say no, but then I reconsider. Why not? It would stop his overweening pride short once and for all…

“Only if you can do it quietly and without being caught.”

            “Understood, Master Harry.”

After I leave class, I see Ron and Hermione whispering about something, before they … kiss.

            Oh my god.

I did not just see that!

Curse you Hermione, you stupid mudblood! You’ve turned my best friend against me! I hate you for doing that!

I hope Voldemort returns to power and kills you all!

Yes… now I realize that it’s a good thing I didn’t kill Crystal. She’s mine now, all mine… and I can purge this school of those filthy nonmagic people…

Where did that thought come from?

It frightens me. But I really hate Hermione!

But I don’t want to kill people!

            What’s happening to me?

            “Master?”

            “Crystal, don’t kill him…”

“Then I’ll just bite him.” She says matter-of-factly. Coral looks slightly jealous. Milk snakes aren’t poisonous.

            Oh well…

Yuki walks by and smiles faintly. He’s as scorned as I am. Well, mostly… the Slytherins have been quite pleasant with us.

Maybe they’re the only ones in this school who know the truth.

            What a pity.

            “Hey, Harry!”

            “Draco!” I wave back.

“Want to study for Charms with us?”

“Sure.” We hardly stay in the Gryffindor Dormitory now… why not extend it further? And pretty soon, we’re all discussing the Summoning charm as we start on our essays for Flitwick.

            Maybe this isn’t so bad…
