Chapter 41 – Syaoran

I don’t know how it happened since one minute I was fighting a Dark Wizard, and the next I was somewhere else… oh yes, somewhere else. I was sprawled in the middle of a dusty road, somehow once again dressed in my green ceremonial robes, and Yue was trying to wake me up with some light shaking. It worked.

            “Yue, I’m awake!”

“Syaoran.” He finally stopped his shaking and gave me what would be a smile. “I’m sorry.”

“Where are we? Where are Ash and the others?”

“I do not know. I think we were hit with some sort of a Teleport spell… and even though I’m not an expert in this area, I’ll hazard a guess that we’re in a different dimension.”

            “Oh, this isn’t good.”

“Don’t worry, it doesn’t feel too dangerous.”

“You should probably hide your wings though, Yue.”

He smiles and they vanish. A few minutes later, a man in Chinese clothing – well, at least it looks Chinese, comes out. He’s wearing a straw hat and leading a water buffalo, so that cinches it. Some peasant…

“Where did you two come from?” He frowns. “This is no place to vacation! You’re on the border between Konan and Kutou!”

“We are?” Yue asks, and then he starts to turn paler.

“Are you a foreigner?” The man asks suspiciously. Well, he’s speaking Chinese at least. This I can deal with.

“I’m sorry, but we’re lost.” I say, and I think that satisfies him. He leaves us alone, and then I turn to Yue.

            < Yue, what’s wrong? >

< I’ve heard about this… a land of four countries and four gods… the Universe of the Four Gods! Clow had the book in his possession for a short while… >

< What do you mean? >

< We’re inside a magic book… no, we’re in another dimension all right, reminiscent of ancient China… >

< All right. > I can deal with that. But Yue still looks frazzled, if for lack of a better word. < What’s wrong? >

< Syaoran, do you have any wishes? >

            < … What? >

< The book itself is a spell… ‘And whosever opens this book and becomes the Maiden of Legend will have three wishes granted….’ >

< What, wait! Firstly, Yue, I’m not a girl, and secondly, even if we’re in this…. Book-world, why should a legend matter? >

< Just be wary, all right? >

            < All right, Yue, I will. I promise… >

Nothing really eventful happens as we continue to walk down the road, so I eat a quick dinner of bread and milk, and then Yue and I fall asleep…

The next morning, we wake up and continue on our journey North. The area seems peaceful enough, if a bit desolate – it’s like we’re wandering through an uninhabited region. However, in this case, it’s not a bad thing….

We spent perhaps a week in a forest, following a stream, until finally, we came upon a small town. We were running low on supplies, and Yue didn’t want me to use the Create card, for fear that someone could sense it, so with the bag of coins that the dimensional teleport had provided, I was going to buy some provisions and then get out of there.

It didn’t quite work out that way.

This blind old hag took one look at me – my aura, I suppose, while I was getting some steamed buns from a street vendor and screamed. “Look! He’s the Priest of Clow, the Chosen One!”

            … What?

Wait… priest of Clow? Did they mean, as in Clow Reed? I didn’t really have time to think, though, because suddenly, this awfully familiar looking winged-lion thing bolted out of a house and pounced on me and started licking my face… < Yue, help! >

Perhaps that was not the smartest course of action either, because as soon as he came and managed to pry the Cerberus-clone off of me everyone started chattering about how this proved that I was Clow’s Chosen One, with two of the seven warriors protecting me already, and the next thing I knew some rich cloth merchant had invited me over to his house for dinner!

So I sat through the courses feeling utterly befuddled and didn’t eat much of it, Yue touched a few dishes just to be polite, although the Cerberus-clone did eat his weight in the after-dinner sweets, and then finally, finally, the old crone came up and decided to explain what was going on to me.

Her explanation matched Yue’s legend too closely for comfort. So to save this country of… Clow, I had to gather the seven warriors of Clow and then summon… Clow himself? This was making less and less sense.

And then I suddenly wondered if I would have to summon Eriol? This must be something of a parallel dimension….

So since I couldn’t really do anything about the situation, I decided to accept. How hard could it be to find the other five warriors, if I already had two?

The next day, I left the village – the old crone had given me the sacred scroll of Clow. I looked through it, trying to find descriptions of the other warriors, but all I found were drawings of Yue, Cerberus, and the Clow Cards. Quite nice, and obviously Clow’s work, even if this was another Clow, but not helpful at all…

Clow… he seemed the same no matter which dimension I went to. It was odd.

Yue and Cerberus didn’t know either – I didn’t expect the stuffed animal to know and Yue’s not from this country. That’s a troubling thought. What if there’s another version of Yue, or worse, one of me, already in this world?

That would be scary, meeting myself…

But then I remind myself that I don’t look like ‘Li Syaoran’ anymore. My hair is white and my eyes dark blue, though they’re turning silvery. It’s almost like Yue… I wonder why. Is it the moon magic we share?

I’ll find out in the future.

Perhaps Ruby Moon and Spinel Sun are two of the seven warriors? That would make sense, like Cerberus and Yue…

Now what am I going to do? I guess it’s away to search, I’m all packed and ready, and my compass is out, and the blue beam scatters in several different directions but the strongest one is pointing Southwest, so I suppose we’ll go there first…
