Chapter 46 – Syaoran

I come out of sleep fuzzily, but it did help, and even if Touya died, it wasn’t my fault. He attacked me with a sword!

The cards are duty-bound to protect me after all…

Yukito peeks into the room as the door creaks upon, a shaft of light falling onto dusty wooden boards. “Are you all right?”

“The ceremony! Oh no! What am I to do now? The country will be in danger if I don’t summon Clow!”

“Shh, you should rest…” But I can’t, and I cannot believe I didn’t see… damn you, Touya, I trusted you!

            I trusted you…

Now I know to never trust again. I will be betrayed in the end…

“I cannot! There has to be – yes, that will work.” And Yukito stares at me as another card shimmers into existence, “Return!”

I don’t know how Touya pretended to be one of my warriors, but now is not the time, now is no time to…

            And everything changes.

I slam back into reality and Yue and Yukito catch me, and everything seems to be fine because I can feel Clow – father, well not in this universe but – I can feel his smile in the back of my mind, and I can’t remember what I did because two different timelines are too complicated…

But it’s all right. Everything will be all right….

            I have to believe that…

“You did it!” Cerberus shouts, as he pounces on me with joy, and Yue and Yukito shake their heads, and the cards cheer…

I did what I had to, and now I’ve fulfilled the destiny this world chose to give…

You mustn’t forget the three wishes, Syaoran-sama. Firey whispers, and I nod. Of course…

“I wish for this country to stay safe and protected, and for all its inhabitants to be happy…”

There’s a flash of dark light, and I hear a whisper of affirmation…

Strange… Yue told me that if the Priestess was weak, the god would devour her, but I don’t feel tired at all…

Well, now for my second wish… I’ve done my duty to this country now, haven’t I? But what do I really want? Wishing for Yue to always love me would be selfish, so I won’t wish that….

“I wish all my cards and the guardians, and Sakura would be happy as well….”

I’m really not trying to be selfish, and I can hear affection in the second ‘Granted’…

Now though, what do I do with the last wish? Perhaps I should wait…

In any case, I smile at the two of them, and then Cerberus suggests that I wish for a feast, and Yue smiles fondly at his almost-brother and says that it’s a good thing Cerberus isn’t the Priest, or he could have wished for the entire country to be made out of candy, and Cerberus shoots back and inquires what’s wrong with that?

And I feel happy again, just like the Mirror of Erised promised…

Perhaps I’ll keep the wish for now…

We can possibly stay here for a few more days before I use the Gateway Card. I can’t go back to Hogwarts yet.

Even if I used Erase on all of their memories – that definitely will not be strong enough…

It’s all right. Everything fades in time…

Only Dumbledore and a few others saw our teleport… so… in a few years, there will only be a few people to Erase… I’ll start now…

Erase winks at me and shoots off to do her work…

There’s a soft rain drizzling outside. I cannot believe I didn’t know this country was in a state of drought.

It’s all right, Syaoran-sama. The world isn’t yours. I’m glad you could help it though!

            “Thank you, Flower.”

Flower smiles at me and then holds out a rose. Interesting. It’s a pretty rose, a palest purple tinged with darker violet. I thank her and then she smiles and prances off.

Oh… it seems that when I wished for happiness, I should have defined it, because when I walk into the bathroom, I see Watery and Bubbles splashing each other in the tub, and Windy and Fly are playing tag around the room…

I suppose they wanted to be more than cards. Does this mean that they aren’t cards any more?

No, I don’t think so… I still have the deck in my pocket, but most of the cards are blank, so the spirits must be out playing…

Yue comes flying out of another room being chased by the Change card, and Change grins at me as he dashes after Yue…

Wait…! I thought Change was a blue lizard. Now, though, he’s a boy with spiky blue hair and a lizard tail, dressed in blue…

Well, maybe he wanted a human form…

Apparently, some of the inanimate – well, all of the inanimate cards decided that having arms and legs and such would be much more fun…

Sword’s turned out into this ninja-like girl with hair in a long braid and a rapier in hand, and Shield’s this peaceful-looking woman in white with a breastplate and a large Western knight-style shield in her hands…

            Fascinating.

So right now, I’m playing tag with the twins and Dash – he kept his fox form, and I nearly ran into a tree that sprouted out of nowhere, and Wood laughs because the Twins have climbed up into the branches, and so I activate Jump and go after them, and then Dash sticks out his tongue and tries to trip me, but I manage to grab one of the twins first, and then the other pushes me out of the tree, giggling, and we all land gently on the dust with Float’s help…

Jump vanishes and the little bunny positively grins at me as he tackles Dash to the ground, and Dash bares his little teeth but it’s all in good fun, really… as they wrestle on the ground, sending up puffs of dust, and then Windy flies by and laughs and makes us even dustier…

After a while, though, we get tired, and Cerberus comes out dragging this mountain of hamburgers, and so we eat, and the villagers come and share the feast, and I didn’t know Card spirits could eat but apparently they can, even though it’s a new thing, and then there’s a problem at night…

Because all of them are trying to get in the same bed with me, supposedly since it makes them feel safe – I don’t blame them, they were just magical cards a few hours ago, but getting in bed with a bunch of card spirits is a bit impossible…

Finally, Little gets annoyed, and shrinks us all, even Yue and Yukito and Cerberus, and we all pile onto the one bed in the temple, and fall asleep, and it’s kind of nice being snuggled…

Besides, this way, no one’s going to attack us in the middle of the night, right?
