Chapter 47 – Ash
Life in this realm wasn’t so bad… we had stayed on Karamja for a few more days, before the tropical heat got too much for me. Then, we went gone to Varrock in search of more quests.
“So this is supposed to be a guardian temple of Saradomin?” It’s a temple, and here I am, knocking at the door quietly. Pretty small one, two stories, huge black doors with gold gargoyles on the knockers…
“This is now a Zamorak temple, no matter what it may have been in the past!” Rei said, eyes closed. “I can feel it.”
“That’s no good, I’m supposed to find a priest who got sent here…”
“Hmm….” Rei closes her eyes. “Maybe I could go in and ask?” Well, she is still wearing her Zamorak robes after all…
“That sounds good.” Subterfuge and all that… well, I shouldn’t just charge in, casting a bunch of Avada Kedavra wouldn’t be good…
So now what should I do? Yes, Rei’s idea is the best. Setsuna, Hotaru and I hide behind a tree while Rei knocks on the door.
“Who is it?”
“I am Rei, second priestess of Zamorak, from the Karamja isle, and I demand entrance in the name of Zamorak!”
The door opens immediately, and two monks in red robes usher her in. I guess she’s right… it’s a Zamorak temple now.
So what happened to the priest King Raoul sent? Did he get kidnapped? Is he dead? Better ask…

< Tell me if you find the priest. >
< I will. >
After a few minutes, I get an answer. < They are holding him hostage in a cell. At least he isn’t dead. I’m not sure I can sneak him out though. >
< That’s not a problem. Rei, as second priestess, you can control other members of your religion, right? >
< Yes, but I can’t ask them to release him, Lord Ashura... >
< No, it’s not that… could you sneak me in as a lower-ranked member of your clan? > Please let this work…
< Oh. Yes, Lord Ashura. >
< Good. > “Hotaru, stay here with Setsuna.”
They nod as I quickly change into red robes. Lucky I have so many clothes… okay, now to the door.
“Halt! Who goes there?”
“I am Harry, assistant to Lady Rei of Karamja.”
“Rei, is this true?”
“Yes, brother.”
“Very well. you should have told me you brought a retinue.”
“There was only one assistant though…” Rei winks at me as I follow her inside. This is kind of fun…
Okay, there’s the priest…. Now to deliver my message!
He told me that the river has been polluted, and no longer serves as a holy barrier. Now creatures from Morytania – dark creatures, can cross freely.
Oh no!
Well, okay… what do I have to do?
He says to purify the river, using rune essence. What in the world is rune essence? I’d better ask someone….
But first, let’s get out of here!
We teleport back to Varrock and ask King Raoul about Rune essence. He tells us to go ask Aubrey, who runs a rune shop… ah, there it is…
“Hello, Aubrey…”
“Would you like to buy some runes?”
“Well, actually, where do I buy rune essence?”
“Oh, that? You can’t buy it. You must mine for the sacred mineral. But until you have proved yourself a worthy mage, I cannot give you the secret of its location.”
Argh… more tests?
“And how would I prove that?”
“Bring me the sword of the feared demon Kilissa, and it shall be done.”
“All right… where is Kilissa found?”
“I do not know.”
Bloody…! Ack, why am I wasting time here. Let’s see… “Accio the sword of Kilissa the demon!”
Pretty soon, a giant black blur comes flying towards me. Well, I summoned the sword just fine, but… I summoned the demon by accident too!
Hotaru and Setsuna immediately run for cover, and hide behind Alakazam. Rei smirks and starts casting, and the defense drops by a third. Good!
Demons… dark magic… okay!
“Light card!”
There we go… it drops the sword and flies away… guess that counts. Aubrey stares at me like I’m a god (again), and then tells me the location of the rune stone. I can teleport there from his shop or the two wizard towers.
So we teleport there and Hotaru gives me a quick check, but I don’t need healing yet, and then we fill a bag with 100 rune stones.
I hope that’s enough….
Well, now we sneak back into the cell, and then the priest says that he needs holy water… where am I going to get that?
Rei frowns. She serves the ‘dark’ god, so… she can’t make holy water.
Setsuna and Hotaru aren’t priestesses…
The closest church is back in Varrock. Time to make another trek there…
So I found a church to Saradomin in Varrock and asked the priest for holy water. And then he said he’d only give it to be if I proved myself a pure soul.
Why are these quests so complicated?
And to prove that I am a pure soul, I must donate 1000 gold coins to the church? Sounds suspiciously like bribery to me…
I refuse!
Hmm… right… then, I’ll just steal the holy water… “Butterfree, I choose you! Use Sleep Powder!”
In a second or two the man’s snoring on the ground. I fill two buckets with holy water and then sneak back to the temple yet again.
Then, the priest says to pour it into the river… and the river is in an underground cavern. Why do I bother?
I’d better get paid a lot for this!
“Setsuna, come with me. Rei, you stay here and protect Hotaru.”
“Yes, Lord Ashura.” They chorus as Setsuna follows me with a puzzled expression.
“Lord, why?”
“I need you to cast a fortune for me after we have purified the river.”
“Oh!”
“And I would like it to be private, hence why they are staying out here.”
“I see…”
“Let’s go.” I open the trapdoor to the cavern and lower myself down on the rope, as Setsuna follows, clumsily…
Into the darkness…
