Chapter 2

“What happened?” Red was frantic. He did not care that Yellow might be awake, as he huddled near the videophone. “Clair, what happened to her?”

“I wish I knew! She said something… I think Grandfather was controlling her… and then she changed…”

“Damn it! I should have sensed something was wrong when she started to talk like that, but I never thought… she always seemed too strong to be controlled. What should I do?”

“I don’t know. She told me not to look for her, Red. I promised that I wouldn’t… and if worse comes to worse, I can’t defeat her.”

“Is she alone?” Red asked. Who knew what she would do alone…

“No, she has Ptera with her, but… none of the others. I’m worried, Red. Please.”

“You don’t need to beg me! Of course I’ll go look for her!”

“Thank you. I’m sorry about telling you this now.”

“It’s not your fault! If you want to blame any one, blame your grandfather. He seems like the one who benefits most from this farce!”

“Yes, I know. But I’m worried about her, Red. You have to understand… I’m not sure she’s quite…”

“Sane? You think I don’t know that? It doesn’t matter, Clair. I’ll find her. And this time, I’ll make sure she comes back safe.”

“Thank you. Do you need me to send you…?”

“No. They would be more hindrance than help. I will be fine. I have Aeroy and Gyara, after all. Goodbye, Clair.”

“Please bring my sister home safely…”

“I will.” Red promised, and hung up.

Yellow huddled next to the banister, shaking.

Who was this ‘her’ they kept talking about?

            Red already had a girlfriend?

            It wasn’t fair!

But then, curiosity got the better of her. If Red had a girlfriend, who was she?

            What did she look like?

Why had no one ever mentioned her?

Yellow did not know, but she swore she would find out. She watched as Red walked outside, and released his Aerodactyl. She did the same, and climbed on Butterfree to follow him.

Red frowned as he flew along. How was he going to find Lance? Aeroy could help, because he and Lance’s Aerodactyl were mates, but if Lance had left Ptera behind, it would make no difference.

Clair hadn’t told Red about the physical changes, but he could probably guess. No more red hair and golden eyes. She’d probably look different…

            It did not matter.

            He would find her.

She looked around at the icy maze she had built with a feeling of satisfaction. She stroked Ptera’s head as sunlight glittered off sharp razors and points.

No one would be able to find her now.

The maze would around them in all its glittering glory. She had a throne of polished ice and plenty of weapons to choose from. Nothing next to a Moltres or Entei would melt the walls of this maze. She was safe.

Now, she could sleep, and forget…

The knowledge that she had stolen from the old man was extensive. She hoped Clair was all right, and Red too, but they scarcely melted her icy heart.

            “Ptera… Return.”

She knew what she had to do.

She had to keep the legends contained now, or else they would be able to wreak havoc, and she did not want Kanto to die, nor Johto, nor even far-off Houen and the Islands…

So now she had Articuno. The first of the birds… it would take time for her to accustom herself to this coexistence, but once she was acclimated, she would go after Zapdos, and finally, Moltres.

She closed her eyes and slept.

Ice wound up her form, keeping her on her throne.

Red looked around worriedly. He was not sure that Seafoam Islands was a good place to come, especially since Articuno was here. Not that he thought Articuno was still angry with him for the Silph Co. fiasco, but Lance trained dragons, and dragons were weak to ice!

He didn’t want to put her in more danger!

However, as he looked around, he shivered. He should have brought a jacket or a cloak or something… it was freezing here!

How was he going to find Lance? Well, might as well start with the tunnels…

Yellow landed quietly as she looked around. It was very cold. She shivered, and wished she had worn heavier clothing. Why was Red flying to Seafoam? Well, it mattered little…

She followed him into a tunnel quietly. Luckily, it was bright and shiny all over the caves. Red was too preoccupied to notice her.

Finally, they walked into another cave, and Red gasped. There, sitting on some kind of ornate throne – was it made out of ice? Was a girl in black armor with wings made out of what looked like shiny metal behind her?

Red rushed forwards, but crashed into an invisible barrier?

It was a wall of ice so smooth and clear that you had to touch it to sense its presence.

Red rubbed his head as he blinked twice in succession, baffled. “Why? Why are you doing this? You know I still love you…”

            There was no reply.

            He took a closer look.

            No, it could not be…

But it was. There was more ice, crystals and intricate helixes, almost as clear as the barrier, keeping her pinned to the throne. He could have sworn some of them went through her chest, though there was no blood yet… Oh Lugia…

            What was he to do?

How would he break her out?

            Would it be dangerous to?

What was he supposed to do now? Just sit here and wait? He growled and wished he actually had a fire pokemon.

It might almost be amusing if it weren’t so dangerous. ‘Red’ had no fire types! Except… Eevee…

It was worth a try. He drew out the legendary firestone and released Vee, nodding.

            Here goes…
