Chapter 8

He quickly read through its contents, suppressing a frown. Yellow had no right to say anything about his love life!

After all, it had certainly not interfered with his battling ability one iota!

            Maybe she was just jealous?

He wanted to toss his pokédex into the spring, but common sense stayed his hand. It was just one email, after all, and if he ruined his pokédex, Oak might skin him alive.

He began composing a reply, keeping it short.

            Dear Professor Oak,

I am currently in training. Where I am is none of your concern. I am not in any danger, and my love life is none of your business!

Red.

            That ought to do it.

He hit the ‘Send’ button with a feeling of vindictive satisfaction, and looked around for a pokémon he had not yet captured.

Hmm, that one over there did not look bad.

He carefully crept forwards to get a better look. It was not a species of pokémon he had encountered in the Seafoam Islands before.

He was used to the Seel and Dewgong, Zubat and Golbat, and the occasional Slowpoke or Krabby, but this was different.

He put his pokédex on the ‘Scan’ function and hit the mute button.

After a few moments, a large yellow question mark beeped up o the screen.

            No Data?

But he already had data on Johto pokémon – oh, it did not matter much. Red nodded as he reached for a poke ball and tossed it at the unsuspecting creature. The pokemon was immediately captured.

He did not even have to weaken it this time.

Lance woke up to find a Poliwrath watching her. Recognizing him as Red’s Poli, she relaxed. Poli was intrigued to notice the interesting markings that now spotted her skin. They were invisible to human eyes, but if one looked with the eyes of a pokemon, one saw swirls of red, blue, and yellow, in featherlike patterns.

Hail the wielder of the three legends!

Lance sighed. So much for being discreet!

As she watched pokémon seemed to appear from all over and spread the news. Red was nearly run over by a herd of stampeding Slowpoke eager to take a look at the new Chosen.

Lance bore it well, though from the twitching in her fingers Red gathered that tonight would be a long night.

            He did not mind, truthfully.

After all, as long as he loved her and she loved him nothing could go wrong!

He might be naive, but he believed this one truth.

If you love someone, and if they do not betray you, then you are safe…

After the last of the petitioners had left, Lance collapsed in his arms with a relieved look. He could see lines of exhaustion marring her beauty.

Speaking of which… had she reverted back yet?

A quick check told him she had, though he had to admit, he did miss her male form just a tiny wee bit.

            “Checking me out now, Red?”

“Didn’t think you’d be this tired.” Red’s grin was pure temptation.

Lance smirked as she held her hands out in front of her. A pale blue glow – Red recognized it as Viridian’s power – suffused her body, and any injuries she might have sustained vanished.

“You forgot about one thing, Red.”

            “You still have it?”

“Of course. Why would I not?”

Red had no answer to that valid point.

Lance kissed him, and then he banished any logical thought to work on later. She was so lovely; he did not want it ever to end. But finally, he leaned against her tiredly, and felt her warm him. It was better than having a fire any day!

Lance wondered what would happen now. She would keep this secret of course, as it was imperative that humans not know. Red and Clair and grandmother Agatha were exceptions. She knew they would not try to capture her.

But what if those she loved did betray her?

            Her eyes glinted. Hard steel…

Then she would have no choice but to kill them and keep her secret safe. Power always came at a price. Silence was often a fair trade.

She watched Red sleep and noticed his pokédex flashing a message. Shrugging, she turned it on.

Ah, so old man Oak had noticed the strange shifting in the elements, hadn’t he?

She typed an email to Grandmother on Red’s pokedex and closed her eyes. The wild pokémon around would fight tooth and nail if anyone came to take her away.

That was one bonus.

Professor Oak and Yellow both watched the sky outside with trepidation. After all, the Viridian forest had started to glow with the three primary colors shortly after daybreak. Now, the glow was fading, but neither of them knew what it was.

Yellow had tried to reach the Forest’s heart, but she had been unable to touch it. Her powers still worked, but… she felt empty.

            What was happening?

            Was it another disaster?

Lance stirred sleepily, as she watched the patterns dance across her pale skin. They were so pretty, but she ought to go to bed. Rest was important to maintaining good health, and if any one came after her she would like to be able to fight them off.

Her two Dragonair, and Dragonite, had come back, and now, they guarded her from fortified positions underwater.

She felt peaceful and protected. With that, she closed her eyes and slept…
