Chapter 2

The Dragonair come up again, just as the sky is starting to turn a grayish-pink, the color of dawn. They are carrying what looks like seaweed, a bright blue seaweed, and she blinks. Yellow is cold, but she senses that something important will happen soon.

Red smiles sadly at Vee, but Vee shakes her head and she hops into his arms for a hug. And he smiles as he hugs her, and a moment later, the hug is over.

Red takes the evolution stones out of his pocket now, the three legendary stones from Vermillion, of Fire, Water, and Electric, and then he hesitates, before Vee starts to glow. Yellow recognizes it.

            Evolution…?

Vee continues to glow, and finally, she turns into a pokémon Yellow does not recognize. She is all night-black with golden rings around her legs, and dark red eyes, and Red laughs and recalls Vee.

She thinks she hears him whisper “Thank you.” but she is not sure.

Was there some strange ceremony he had to come here for? She is surprised that Vee evolved – and without the stones too, but she does not have much time because Red places one more stone on the ground.

            It is a Leaf Stone.

Then, the Dragonair come and they lay their seaweed on the stones, most of it, and Red does not say a word as one of them hands him a piece – a slab, really.

The sun is coming up as he presses his hands to the pile, and then the next thing she sees is a light so bright that she has to look away.

When the dizzy spots are finally blinked away from her eyes, she sees nothing. Red is gone. So are the dragons.

She looks around frantically, but there is nothing there!

            Where did he go?

A feeling bubbles up in her chest, and she recognizes it too late. Terror…? Why?

In any case, she has to go tell Professor Oak of this development quickly, so she flies away, hoping that she is not too late.

“I missed you.” He whispers, and even if Lance’s eyes are flat golden and there are strange markings around his eyes, almost like tattoos, only they are red slashes right underneath his lids, it is him.

And when Lance smiles at him like that; it makes everything worth it.

Red closes his eyes as he feels Lance wrap strong arms around him. He feels safe and warm, and if Lance’s teeth are a bit more pointed than he remembers, well, what of it? And he can feel the changes spreading through him, too, as Lance holds him.

He does not know where they are. The place they are in is very bright, but the ground is soft, and off in the distance, he sees what looks like a pair of hewn stone doors, thousands of feet high.

            A whisper of black smoke…

What would he give up for Lance?

            What a silly question. Anything!

The doors shine, and he feels wrenching pain in his chest for a moment but then it fades, and Lance kisses him so he thinks on it no more.

He doesn’t notice that his eyes have become ruby slits, and that his teeth are strangely pointed.

Lance is alive, and safe for now… and his mind drifts to more pleasant matters as they embrace. Always together, never to be parted again, Red swears.

            And Lance agrees.

By the time Yellow makes it to Oak’s, she is exhausted, but she blurts out her tale. The Professor looks absolutely baffled by her story, and begins calling his acquaintances.

Perhaps Red discovered some radioactive seaweed? Or the energy of the evolution stones caused an unstable reaction?

Her head is swimming as the Professor lists theory after theory, but none of this is helping any, so she goes back to Red’s house to await his return, and she finds Pika asleep on the sofa.

She smiles and they go to bed, despite the very late – or early – hour.

            Pika sneezes, and she laughs.

            Silly Pikachu.

He feels Lance’s fingers in his hair, and he relaxes, closing his eyes. Ever since he had brought Lance back, he had seemed a bit different. Almost too perfect to be a mere human…

But then again, as he looked in the mirror, his skin was as pale as death, and his clothing… it was a deep, rich red color. Lance was wearing something similar, only in black with red accents.

            He liked it.

He did not question how strange things had become. It seemed that they no longer needed food to survive, but… other things.

Of course, they had found this out the hard way. Blood worked in a pinch, but really, what they really lived off were elemental stones.

It was a pity they were so expensive.

Red did not think they would have to worry for a long while though, what with the legendary stones of Vermillion in their blood. For he felt the echoes of the Thunder and Leaf stone in his body, and he was sure Lance held Water and Fire.

How odd things had turned out.

            They would always have power.

            He was happy.

Lance smiled as he stroked Red’s forehead. “I am glad you did what you did.”

He did not care that he had crossed the limits of humanity. In fact, he felt elated. Finally, he was free of his cursed blood!

His pokémon were every so happy to see him again. And his power was a lovely thing. Viridian’s gift bloomed still, but now, he could mold fire and water to his liking. It was very useful.

Red did the same – plants almost followed him around, basking in his touch, and he could fire lightning from his fingertips in defense if he wished.

Everything was perfect, and if anything wished to shatter his perfection…

Lance’s fingers curled into claws that took on a dull metallic tint, elongating and becoming pitch-black…

“You’ll hurt them.” Red’s voice was a gentle purr. “You’ll kill them for me.”

            “Would you like me to?”

“Yes.” Red squirmed slightly in Lance’s arms. “I want them to hurt. After all, they hurt you.”

It was nice to have a protector, especially when it went both ways. He smiled.

Vee yawned, as she looked at her Master and her Master’s mate. Master had changed, somehow, become stronger, with powers like one of them, but she cared little. The rings on her body flared slightly as she stretched, but the glow died down soon enough. She watched as they slept.

            Nice Masters.
