Chapter 5

“I want to kiss you.” He whispers.

His lover smiles back, a predatory expression in golden eyes. “I know.”

It is wonderful, this new system that they have implemented. The legendary stones still glow warmly within their hearts, and their lives had stretched out over the centuries.

They are peaceful now and forever. The former gym leaders and Champions have become Elite, along with a select few – Color trainers, all of them.

Now, the pokémon and the remnants of humanity live in perfect harmony.

            There is nothing wrong.

Of course, there are still some fools that argue for the reiteration of the system, but any fool can see that it was corrupt to begin with.

As a matter of fact, they have an audience with them right now.

The man looks ill at ease – he is wearing a stiffly starched business suit that must have belonged to his great-grandfather. The other man is likely that great-grandfather, as his hair is pure white in what few wisps remain, but the whites of his eyes are rolling madly. There are liver spots over his body.

Red feels a twitch of sympathy, but it fades instantly. After all, this man is trying to destroy their utopia!

There is a little girl peeking in on this conversation, but he is not really interested about children.

After all, the children all read the history the Elite have written.

“You murderers.” The man hisses, and he sees the little girl gasping in utter shock. He pretends not to notice.

Lance smiles, a harsh smile. “Murderers?”

“Yes. You Elite Four have caused untold destruction all over Kanto, and now you claim to be the ones that brought peace? Lying bastards!”

“You are mistaken, old man.” Lance continues placidly.

The man bangs a fist on the table. “You creatures are all unnatural, that’s what you are! You should be long dead!”

“We did bring peace to Kanto.”

“By destroying the cities?” He rages.

“What of them? As you can see, humanity has endured without problems.”

That is not quite true, but their Nurse Joys recognize the potential troublemakers and kill them before they leave the womb. It is most efficient.

Soon, the old vestiges will die… and everything will end.

            “You have NO RIGHT!”

“We called you sir, in order to endure civil conversation.” Red cuts in crisply. “So far, you have shouted obscenities and little else.”

“That is quite… irritating.” Lance added.

She wonders why her grandfather is so rude. After all, the Elite Four did what they did to help people and pokemon, and now everyone is happy and there are lots of pokemon to play with!

            Why is that bad?

She is happy to be with all the cute pokemon, and she is happy to be here…

She wants her grandfather not to make the Elite angry. Only stupid people do that.

            Is Grandfather stupid?

And Grandfather pulls something out of his jacket with a laugh, and it fires and she screams because it’s loud, and Red falls over and he is bleeding!

Why would Grandfather hurt an Elite?

Lance simply laughs, and then he moves so fast she can’t see it, and Grandfather falls down to the ground paralyzed, and there are sparks crackling between his fingertips.

“That was foolish of you.” Lance says, and then the guards burst in.

They are all wearing the white body armor of the Elite bodyguards.

She should feel sorry now that Grandfather is gone, but she doesn’t.

“You can come out now,” Lance says, and she shyly comes in.

Red sits up, and his eyes look like he hurts. She reaches into her dress for a candy and gives it to him.

            She hopes he’ll smile.

He does, even though it’s only a caramel, and then he tells her not to worry. They are Elite, after all.

She nods, and he looks at Lance for a moment, before he nods.

And the next thing she knows, she’s riding with him on his Aerodactyl, and the wind whistling through her hair is so fun!

“I am sorry you had to see that,” He says.

            “It’s not your fault.”

            “Was he your grandfather?”

She nods, ashamed that such a bad person is related to her.

“Don’t worry.” Red tells her. “But it’s getting dark. Are you going back to Houen tonight?”

She nods. It’s not every day an Elite actually talks to you, after all!

            “Have fun.”

            She does.

Of course, when she’s older she thinks on it, and wishes she had said something, but there’s no point to.

Elites are special and the world belongs to them.

And she’s perfectly happy to be at home with her Poochyna – now a Mightyena, and plant bushes full of berries.

And all is right with the world, right?

“Indeed.” Lance tells Red, and they laugh. That old man was the last of their detractors. Now, no one except the pokemon will remember the past… and the Elite, but the Elite are all Elite, and will not fight one another.

            It is nice that way.

            Their dream worked after all.

Isn’t it odd how things turn out?
