Yes, I am able to make a third Letter series! If you guys don’t like it, don’t read it! Sometimes I need to write these plotless lemons to get my muses working again.

Phantomness plays Reborn the Plotbunny!

Timeline: Oh, near/after the lighthouse with Bill episode

Disclaimer: I don’t own pokemon. Pokemon belongs to Nintendo and Shogakukan Comics. This non-profit, non-copyright infringing fanfiction belongs to me!

Notes: <> for telepathy, ** for thoughts, and italics if a pokemon talks

I suddenly realized that this is not a lemon and will be a new series! All right then, now I just need a title!

Okay. Let’s see. This fic takes place after Mew Amulet and ‘Riding the Tempest’, Mew Amulet was another test for 27 lives, though not explicitly mentioned, and the sequel are ‘Neverland’ and those series.

Summary: Ash finds a poke ball in an abandoned mansion, which leads to his kidnapping? Or are the two events unrelated?

Title: True Ability

Chapter 1

            “Where are we this time?”

Ash looked around. “Er… we seem to be stranded on an island.”

“I know that, how did we get here?” Misty fumed.

            “Urk.”

Brock pulled out a map as he attempted to discern their questionable location. “That’s a very good question…”

            “Huh?”

“We can’t possibly have walked across the sea without noticing, could we?”

            “I hope not!”

“Well, hope or not, we’re stuck!” Misty fumed. “What are you going to do about it now, Ash?”

Ash blinked, wondering why Misty had suddenly become so… well, annoying? Nah, this was old stuff…

            Pikachu yawned.

“Well, maybe we could build a raft and float off.”

“That is the stupidest idea I have ever heard!”

“We could use our water pokemon…”

“To swim across the entire ocean? I doubt if yours know surf.”

“Do you have a better idea?” Ash asked, his temper near fraying.

“Yes. We could look for civilization!”

Brock sighed as Misty yanked Ash’s arm off and they tromped through the sand. Honestly, he was sick of playing babysitter…

Maybe he should just ditch the two here, and with luck they’d wind up madly in love with each other.

One can hope, right? Even if hope is futile…

Once they were gone, Brock released his secretly hidden Omanyte and had it surf him back to Pewter.

            He needed a break!

Squirtle. Bulbasaur. Charmander. Pidgeotto. Butterfree. And, of course, who could forget Pikachu?

After two hours of walking, they spotted what looked like a palm hut. No, actually, it was a menacing castle with wrought iron gates, not rusty though. The gates glittered blackly in the sun.

Ash hesitantly knocked on the nearest fence post. There was no reply.

Misty pushed the gates open. “Come on, let’s go find shelter!”

Ash coughed, wondering where Brock had gone. * Lucky bastard ditched, didn’t he? I hate my life… *

Just in case though, he released Charmander for some additional protection. As it turned out, that was quite necessary.

A snarling – was that a Victreebel? Shot out of the garden. Yes, garden. Lots of large, overgrown gourds…

            Oh. Shoot!
Large overgrown gourds + smaller ones = entire colony of Bellsprout chain. And, Weepinbell and Victreebel are occasionally known to eat people…

            EEK!

            “Charmander, Flamethrower!”

That deterred the nearest plants. The rest backed away nervously. Meanwhile, Misty had made it to the door without trouble. * What’s taking him so long? *

            She knocked.

A roar sounded inside. It did not sound like a happy roar. A minute later, the door opened – and a giant snarling Gyarados flew out.

But how had the door opened?

“Pikachu!” Ash gasped, as the electric mouse fried the rodent. “You know Misty, maybe this is a bad idea.” * Eek! What kind of person lives *here*? *

Gyarados fell to the ground, fainted.

Ash tossed a poke ball. To his surprise, Gyarados was caught! Oh? It was wild? That was odd. In that case…

Ash enlarged another poke ball and captured one of the Victreebel that Charmander had fried earlier. Well, no use wasting precious resources right? And if he wanted to be a pokemon master, he needed to catch more pokemon!

            Right.

“Are you sure about this Misty?”

Misty was starting to look a little spooked. “Maybe not, but since we’re already here, let’s keep looking.”

The interior of the house was coated with layers and layers of dust. It was very nice, expensive-looking wine-red velvet-coated furniture, but still dusty.

            “What should we do?”

“I’ll go that way.” Misty pointed down a corridor.

            “Okay!”

With that, Ash and Misty split up. After all, Misty assured him she could take care of herself. Didn’t she have water pokemon? Wasn’t she a gym leader?

Ash wasn’t in the frame of mind to argue. He had no desire to journey through space via Mallet express again.

He pushed open the door to a simple room and gasped in shock.

            No way…

Well, for starters, this room was pristine, without a single speck of dust. It was also white. A glistening white marble floor sparkled brightly underneath his feet, the walls were painted with a blinding white paint that made his head spin in dizzy black spots, and the ceiling… well, it was actually a giant skylight, let in plenty of natural light. However, that was not what attracted his attention.

What *really* attracted his attention was the red-and-white standard poke ball lying on-so-innocently on a tiny little crystal pedestal in the middle of the room.

            Pretty.

Ash cautiously looked at Pikachu, who misinterpreted the look, and hopped over to the poke ball, pressing the release button.

            Nothing happened.

Pikachu hit the little button again.

            …Still no reaction.

Getting annoyed, Pikachu fried the poke ball – and Ash – and the room. If nothing had happened the first two times, why would it work this time?

Ash sighed, pocketed the poke ball, making a mental note to ask Professor Oak sometime later, and then prepared to leave. He spent a few minutes dusting his clothes off. At least he was building some resistance to electric attacks.

Nothing interesting was revealed in his search, however.

A scream erupted from another area of the house.

            “HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”

Ash blinked as Misty ran past, screaming her head off… but he couldn’t see exactly what was chasing her, or why it would be relevant.

In fact, he was seeing absolutely nothing at all.

Shrugging, Ash left the house. Odd. Well, maybe now Misty would be more receptive to his plans. After all, rafting away didn’t sound so bad…

            Was there a ghost?

Oh. Shoot. It looked like those bellsprout had woken up again! Ash grinned. * Might as well take advantage of this then. *

“Pidgeotto, you need some EXP! Wing Attack and Whirlwind!” Whistling a cheerful sonata, Ash walked off.

Pidgeotto caught up with him six minutes later looking exceedingly proud of her, glowing with vibrant beauty. Wait a minute – glowing?

“YATTA!” Pidgeotto is evolving into Pidgeot! Ash happily hugged his new pokemon. Well, that solved the transportation problem. He wouldn’t really leave Misty here, maybe just for a few days so she wouldn’t be so mean in the future…

Climbing aboard Pidgeot airways, Ash took off. Good-bye, Island…

He still had to figure out the secret of the poke ball. To Pallet, then!

Oak yawned as Ash landed on his driveway. “Well, hello Ash. I see you’ve somehow managed to capture a Gyarados and a Victreebel in addition to your Krabby earlier. Maybe you’re not as hopeless as I initially anticipated.”

            Ash blinked.

Oak suddenly realized he had said that out loud. “Never mind, never mind. So tell me. Why are you here?”

“I found this poke ball…” Ash held it out. “It says there’s a pokemon inside, since the light is on, but no matter how many times I press the release button, it won’t open.”

“Interesting.” Oak said, pulling out some equipment as Ash handed the ball over. Ash neglected to mention that even after Pikachu’s zapping, the poke ball was completely undamaged and pristine.

Maybe he shouldn’t have taken it, but there hadn’t been anyone else in the abandoned house! Well, he’d find out soon enough… right?

            Right.
