Chapter 2

“I wish that you loved me.” She remembered saying, long ago.

“I do love you.” The other had replied, cape blowing in the wind. She had looked into his golden eyes with a feeling of frustration.

            “You don’t understand! I’m a girl!”

“Does that make any difference?” He asked quietly.

“It should! What kind of girl would – you must think I’m a freak….”

“No, I just think you’re a tomboy, but I have no reason to judge you.”

            “…Why?” She had whispered.

The other had undone the cords at the throat of her cloak and dropped it to the ground, and had taken off his jacket, followed by his shirt.

That was when she realized the truth.

“It would be awfully hypocritical, would it not be, Red?”

            “Lance….”

            “I love you, Red.”

            And that had been enough.

“Who came up with these costumes?” Red demanded, as they leapt from building to building. She shivered.

Lance shot Red a glance, and shrugged. They were wearing identical outfits, Red’s in red of course, and her own in dark blue. Their outfits consisted of masks and white leotards, a short schoolgirl skirt of the appropriate color, and sturdy combat boots in again, red or blue.

“I believe you did. We were going for something outrageous that no one would suspect, were we not?”

            “Well… yeah, but still!”

“Are you cold? We could have worn our trench coats over it.”

“I just don’t see why we could not have just transformed, Lance.”

Lance narrowed her eyes. “But that’s the whole point. We cannot transform, and that is why we cannot use any of our higher powers. All we have left are our cards. Nothing else…”

“And you don’t even have your pokemon cards.” Red whispered.

“Yes, I know. All I have is the set that remains… the Clow turned Sakura set turned Moon…”

“I still think you’re wonderful.” Red grinned. “After all, if not for the Jump card, we could not do this.”

            “Fly might have been faster.”

“Yes, but that would attract too much attention.”

Lance stifled a laugh as she nodded. “There!”

The girl was very young, but even young children could hide darkness in their hearts, and the guardians could allow no darkness.

Red nodded, as they watched. A shape forced itself out of her back, resolving into a vaguely Gengar-shaped blob, only the colors were all wrong, a sickly shade of lime green and electric blue eyes.

It would have been funny had it not been so dangerous.

These mutant pokemon that were born from the deepest desires of people’s hearts were dangerous, and unpredictable. They could be simple emotions, like lust or envy, or they could be the result of prolonged trauma and abuse.

Lance frowned as Red withdrew the Wand of the Fire Guardian from her pocket. “She gave it to you?”

“She’s in hibernation sleep. I can hardly wake her from Sleep of Death now…”

“It would be cruel.” Lance agreed.

“Bright flame to call the phoenix.” Red intoned, as she pointed it at the Gengar. It noticed them then, and leapt forwards to attack, rude hands sparking. It must be an electric attack.

“Earthy!” Lance snapped, throwing out a card. A spirit of dark brown earth rose from the ground, wrapping the Gengar in her strong arms. The sparks on its hands fizzled and died. It struggled, but Earthy held fast.

Red idly wondered about that, since with their new Levitate ability, ghosts evaded ground type moves, but decided not to ponder as Lance whipped out her wand. The wand of the ice guardian shimmered brightly.

“Holy water to cleanse the presence!”

Earthy smiled as rain rained down upon her and the Gengar. The Gengar began to screech in a high-pitched voice. Red grinned as he materialized the Wand of the Thunder guardian in his hands, the Lightning wand.

“Heaven’s Fury to destroy this abomination and purify the earth!” He cried. Jagged bolts of white lightning lanced from the three lightning bolts on top of the wand, and the Gengar gave a pathetic mew as it was vaporized.

            “That was not so bad.”

“Indeed. It is lucky we retained these weapons. And so are we locked.”

“I don’t see why I’m a girl. At least I’m not Ashline.” Red shuddered. “That was unpleasant…”

“I was not that cruel to you, was I?”

            “Well no, but even so…”

“You cannot help being somewhat incompetent all the same.”

            “You’re so mean Lance!”

“Yes, yes, I know.” Lance smirked as she took off her mask. “Let’s go home.”

            “Isn’t it dangerous?”

“I have Erase… I’d just prefer not to use it too often.”

            Red laughed. “Can we fly?”

            “Well, if you insist…”

Red released Pidgeot, feeling brown-and-white wings sprout from her shoulder blades. Lance smirked as she willed her wings to appear. They did so, though they were not what she had expected.

“Well, that is interesting. I had thought that with enough time, they would heal, but it seems that it is not to be.”

Red touched sharp-edged metal with a careful finger. “I’m sorry.”

“Don’t be. The pain bled away long ago.”

            “I know, but even so…!”

“Shh.” Lance pulled her into her arms. “It is all right. Shall we?” She extended a hand and Red took it, as they flew away.

Neither of them noticed a little girl watching and staring in awe.

End Chapter

You know when you read really good fic you get emotional? I do, anyways… “Forgotten” by Alex is a wonderful Haruka/Michiru fic that always chokes me up. I get choked up reading Count of Monte Cristo too, the speech between the Count and Mercedes between the Count’s duel with Albert. And if I wanted to brag about my own writing, I always get choked up reading ‘Cuando, Cuanto’. ^^

I hate this! I keep writing Red as ‘he’ by accident. Ay…
