Chapter 3!

            It was so easy.

She came back with the portable snag machine in her arms – duplicated it in Silph, hooked it up to Silph’s Master Ball… sent the Master Ball’s blueprint off to Orre with a promise – you stay in your region, we stay in ours.

            Perfect weapon.

It was so quick; it only took a few days for it all to happen.

She was studying the pokemon – all the pretty, pretty pokemon, but she didn’t want the Red Gyarados back, there was nothing but lust in its eyes now, but she did want her Gyarados and Dragonite back…

After that, then, it was just supervision. They sent a few grunts and an executive out to monitor each town, and others to hunt down the few who had been able to get away – mostly gym leaders, as no one else had enough pokemon to do important things…

Most of the gym leaders just accepted fate – a few had secretly been with Team Rocket beforehand, so that left a handful unclaimed.

Misty and Brock – they were off in the Orange Islands, where Team Rocket’s influence had not yet spread. Whitney and Jasmine were somewhere in Johto…

            Water. Rock. Normal. Steel.

And then there was Houen. They had teams with Snag Balls there, but they were weak, untrained. The gym leaders stayed and supervised their cities here in Kanto. So, they needed volunteers.

Giovanni sent her and Tyson. Had them bring Ash along as on-the-job training. He’d whispered special instructions in her mind with a wink and a snigger before they left. He’d known that she wouldn’t fail him.

            So now they were there.

            Ash was nervous.

He wasn’t about to admit it, but he was nervous. He had a supply of 99 Snag Balls in his backpack. He had his Orange Island trainer I.D. His hair was grown out and pulled back in a ponytail that looked kind of nice, and he wore blue contacts and fake glasses to hide his true identity.

He had a room full of pokemon back in HQ – Father had let him choose some more, but what he really wanted were his old ones. A few extras didn’t hurt though. His belt was linked to either of the TR distribution Centers in case they needed more backup… since as Giovanni’s heir, he didn’t have the three-six-or-twelve pokemon carrying restriction.

Now though, he stroked Pikachu – no, Raichu’s fur, and tried not to sweat.

They’d evolved, all of them – no, not all. Cyndaquil and Totodile were still base form, but Chikorita had gone all the way to Meganium.

He had Snorlax and Tauros and Pidgeot, Primeape and Muk, and then, three extras… that he’d stolen himself.

He didn’t have to, but he’d wanted to try, so Jessie and James had dragged him out on one of their missions to a breeding Center.

Hat’s when he’d spotted them. All the baby pokemon, and he knew he wanted them, so he’d moved faster than he thought possible and caught almost half the pokemon while Jessie and James were distracting the owner.

He put three on his team.

He wasn’t sure where his old Charizard was – probably still in the valley. Squirtle was with his Squad, hopefully out of sight, and Bulbasaur had gone back to Melanie in the Hidden Valley… along with Pidgeot and Butterfree. Good… they were safe there… and Heracross too…

Kingler was … somewhere, he didn’t know anymore.

            “See anyone?”

Ash jumped. “I didn’t hear you come up.”

Lance gave him a half-smile. “I’m supposed to be quiet. Do you see anyone?” Belatedly, he realized that he was staring blankly at a tree through his binoculars and blushed.

            “Sorry…”

“It’s all right… Tyson’s spotted one that looks good we’ll go take a look, shall we?” She smiled.

            “Okay! Sounds great.”

It was still catching pokemon after all… he fingered Scizor’s poke ball as he walked onwards. Scizor was a good pokemon…

May Littleroot never thought anything special would happen to her. Sure, her father was the gym leader Norman, but it wasn’t anything special, right? So when she saw a pretty cute trainer who asked she wanted to battle, she accepted right away.

            It was a mistake.

            “Torchic go!”

“Pretty.” The other boy had smiled. “Totodile, I choose you! Water Gun!”

“Oh no! Torchic! She’d watched the chick wobble, and sent out Tropius instead. He’d used Totodile’s Blizzard to force Tropius into a block of ice.

Then… she couldn’t remember much more than that.

Lance recalled her Duskull with a fond smile. “All clear. Dream Eater.”

            “She have anything good?”

“Torchic, Tropius, Wailmer, and Makuhita. Beginning trainer, mostly.”

“Bother… at least they’re not bonded to her yet, so we don’t have to turn them into Shadow pokemon.”

            “True…”

“How are you feeling, Lance?” Ash had no idea this was the Champion who had saved him before, and Lance had never bothered to enlighten.

            “Me? I’m fine, why?”

“Because… um…” He lowered his voice. “You’re kind of cute – is Tyson your boyfriend?”

“No, we’re just partners.” * except when he wants some. *

‘Oh… well, um…. If we have free time later, could you… go out with me?”

How cute! “You’re so shy. You know that as Heir we have to obey your orders.”

“Yes, but it’s not like I’m going to force you on a date!”

            “Point taken.”

Tyson scowled, but Ash was – the little brat – Giovanni’s son…

Oh well. He wasn’t a hopeless trainer at least. “Let’s go.”

Ash and Lance followed Tyson in search of other trainers…
