Chapter 2

Ugh, my physics class is killing me! I’m too tired to put the disclaimer and everything…

Lance is faking, and so are the other 2 Elite, if that wasn’t evident…

Chapter 2

            “You’re challenging me?”

            “Mm.”

“But you just got out of the hospital! Are you sure?”

“I’ll refrain from battling with my pokemon this time, but please do not underestimate my ability, Red…”

Red grinned. “All right! Then as Pokemon League Champion, I accept your challenge! Poli, I choose you!”

Poliwrath, Red’s faithful first, appeared in a flash of ruby light. Lance smirked inwardly. Red used some of the same flamboyant gestures he did, but he also knew when to use secrecy and hide all signs of planning…

“Hakuryuu, do you think you’re up for this?”

Dragonair laughed in a high, trilling voice. Of course! Mist heralded her arrival, and Red sucked in a slight breath, before grinning. “Poliwrath! Seismic toss!”

Poliwrath leapt up towards the dragon, but she just swatted him away with her tail, before a Slam attack followed – only to discover that it had been Double team again. Red was awfully fond of that move…

The real Poliwrath leapt up from behind Dragonair with an Ice Beam…

Dragonair wailed in pain, she was weak to ice after all, but breathed out a Thunder attack in retaliation…

            Poliwrath fell.

Red frowned. Perhaps he was underestimating his opponent. From what Yellow had said, Lance could do… strange things with his dragon pokemon, but Lance wouldn’t hurt him, never…

            “Noctowl, I choose you!”

How interesting! A bird with stubby wings, an owl, flying-type obviously… “Detect!”

Detect would prevent Hakuryuu’s attacks, but only if it could be seen… Lance snapped his fingers and Red gaped as Dragonair dove underground.

What good would that do? Detect would work, wouldn’t it?

Still… Noctowl hovered near the hole, waiting… and then launched forwards a psychic attack…

Dragonair hid behind her light screen defense, waiting… this bird was a newly caught pokemon, obviously… and much too eager! She waited… while the tunnel around her body began to mist over, water droplets hardening into a slick sheet of ice…

Red looked at Lance, but the trainer had his eyes closed and looked utterly unaffected… and as Noctowl dove towards the hole, bluish light grew all around it, trapping it in an icy prison…

Hakuryuu emerged languidly, and coiled part of her body ‘round Lance’s waist with a smile.

“Insane…” Red breathed. * I’m so glad I didn’t have to fight him in Cerise… * “How… Lance, how did you do that?”

“I didn’t tell her to do anything. Dragon pokemon are smart though.” Lance smiled. “I suppose we’re lucky this isn’t a real battle, ne, Champion?”

“Well, you’d have to defeat my Pika, wouldn’t you?” Red grinned. His grin slipped as Lance winced.

“Oh… I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to bring that up…” Yellow still had his Pikachu, and… Pika was rather attached to her…

Yes, he had accidentally walked in while Yellow was toweled and he most certainly hadn’t expected that!

            Still…

It was kind of …odd. He knew he ought to be grateful at her, but whenever he thought of what she had had done to Lance, he would feel so angry

            Red sighed. “One more?”

            “If you insist…Hakuryuu, tired?”

            Of course not!

            “Mm. Well, all right then.”

            “Gyara, I choose you!”

“Ah, dragon to dragon…” The two dragons spiraled into the air and began lashing weather at each other, Surf and Ice Beam and Thunder mixing high above…

Lance’s red hair was getting rather soaked, the spikes flattening down… finally, the two sank back down to earth; Lance’s Dragonair coiled around Gyarados.

            Lance’s eyes widened slightly. * Oh dear… *

            “Red?”

“What is it? Did I win?”

            “Er… I suppose so…”

            “?”
“I think,” Lance swallowed, “That battling is the last thing on their minds right now.” * How did this happen? *

Red colored as the implications finally sank in. “Oh…!”

“Shall we give them some privacy?”

“Eh, that’d be good….” Red now resembled an overripe tomato. “I… I guess you win.” * I’m so lucky this isn’t official! *

“But this was just for fun.” Lance said, as they walked a distance away, leaving the two sprawled upon the grassy fields. Lance smoothed down the black fabric of his catsuit and inwardly cursed Yellow for ruining his favorite red jacket.

Well, not that it meant anything, but he liked it! And of course, he was still cloaked in flame-lined night…

Never mind what they thought, his fashion sense had nothing to do with his plans for world destruction.

“So what are you up to, as Champion? Still taking challenge letters every day?”

Red colored slightly. “Not really. I mean they’re really easy to beat… I’ve lost count of the number of trainers I’ve battled, but…. It seems so unfulfilling?”

“That makes sense. I suppose what Bruno said to you was true.”

            “You know?”

“Well, Agatha was controlling Bruno, and his bracelets had a one-way radio in them too…”

“Oh…” Red was about to say more, but suddenly, a message flashed up on his pokedex. It was from Oak.

“Ne, Lance, want to go to Mount Moon with me?”

            “Why there?”

            “Investigating.” Red grinned.

“Interesting enough. I’ll accompany you then.”

“Er… will the two of them be all right alone?”

“Hakuryuu knows how to find me.”

            “Let’s go, then!”

The two released their respective Aerodactyls and soared off…
