Aging Ash up…

Chapter 1

Charizard gave a triumphant roar as the Blastoise, his opponent, toppled to the ground, senseless after a powerful Headbutt.

Ash could not believe it. The thirteen-year-old had finally won! * I did it! I’ve found my dream! I’m the Pokemon Master! *

Gary, his childhood friend, looked shaken… as he recalled his Blastoise.

Lance sighed inwardly. Third place now, due to two children who were much younger! It was inconceivable, and yet, the facts were true…

He stepped forwards, a golden belt with two olive sprays surmounting a poke ball on its buckle glittering in his hands. “As the Leader of the Elite Four, I proclaim Ash of Pallet Town our new Champion.”

Gary shook his head. * I was only champion for half an hour… *

“Friends still?” Ash asked, holding out his hand.

Gary blinked. “You still want to be my friend?” * after I’ve carelessly teased him and belittled his training ability on our journey… *

“Of course!” Ash grinned brightly, causing Lance’s heart to skip a beat as he carefully fastened the belt around the boy’s waist. * Stop thinking about it! You’re older than he is! *

“As Champion, you are sworn to defend the League. You are required to stay at the Plateau six months out of every year.” Lance continued. Why wasn’t Oak here? He didn’t want to give the speech himself…

            Ash looked downcast. “What?”

“You did not know? You cannot leave whenever you feel like now. From January to June, this is your home.”

“… I see…” * what have I gotten myself into? *

“Now then, I will register your pokemon in the hall of fame. Follow me.” Ash obligingly did, and they met a computer. Putting his six poke balls in the six slots allotted, he watched as they scrolled past…

Charizard – his starter, his first companion.

Raichu – mature, a Pikachu no more, but still with a fondness for acorns.

Jigglypuff – although most trainers looked down on such a girly pokemon, she was part of his team and he loved her.

Ditto – able to transform into anything the situation desired, he had saved Ash’s life on more than one occasion.

Alakazam – his psychic powerhouse, a gift from Sabrina, once an Abra, now powerful in his own right.

Lapras – gentle, nurturing, and another gift from Sabrina, after it was stolen… he had once belonged to Silph, but now was Ash’s loyal pokemon.

Lance handed Ash his poke balls back after all the pokemon had been registered. “Well, it is May now, so you have to stay here for a month or so before you can leave. I’m sorry, Ash.”

            “I… it’s not your fault… is it?”

He laughed. “Of course not. I’m just Elite. Now then… as Champion, you are required to register a certain team of pokemon as your default team when battling. It can have anywhere from three to six pokemon… once you choose, it is set in stone, so choose wisely.”

He nodded, paying close attention. “What else?”

“You are also required to attend meetings once every three months… they’re quite boring, and you’re still so young, but it’s a requirement…”

            “I see…”

Lance detailed a few more mundane topics, and then paused. “Oh yes. The belt you have allows you to carry twelve pokemon instead of six, and also serves as identification. You’ll no longer need your pokedex for that.”

            “Wow…”

“Now then, one last topic.” He smiled. “We need a replacement gym leader for Giovanni. We can’t exactly let him keep his job, being as he’s the leader of Team Rocket. You know Gary well, it seems. Would he be reliable?”

            “His grandfather would be proud.”

“Ah yes, Professor Oak’s grandson… very well. I shall tell him. Now then, we should leave this room.”

Ash followed Lance out as the door slid shut behind them. Professor Oak was waiting with Gary, who looked annoyed.

“Well, Ash, it seems that you have become champion. May I see your pokedex?”

He nodded. He had ninety-six pokemon so far, and of course, Articuno’s data was there as well, although Blaine had the bird. Speaking of which… he ought to call all his friends and tell them the good news!

And his mom, of course… she’d be worried, but hopefully, she’d seen his matches on T.V…

Oak handed back the pokédex and pulled Lance aside, a few minutes later, Gary was inaugurated as the new leader of the Viridian Gym.

Gary was very pleased with this turn of events, and he bade Ash farewell with a fond smile before he left on Pidgeot.

“Now Ash… now that you’ve become champion, there’s something important I have to tell you.”

            “I’m listening.”

Oak took a deep breath. “I need you to capture this pokemon.” He held out a photograph of a twisted purple-and-white form..

            Lance gasped. “Mewtwo.”

“Yes… Mewtwo lives deep in the Unknown Dungeon, into which only the Champion may pass…”

“He’s not going in there alone.” Lance stated firmly. “He’s still a child!”

“Well, what would you suggest we do? Just let Mewtwo run wild?”

“I’ll go with him.” Lance stated firmly. “I may have lost, but my dragons can still put up a good fight. Two is better than one in any case. Surely you would not send your grandson into this danger?”

            Oak sighed. “Very well.”

Ash peeked out from behind a pillar. Finally they had stopped arguing! “You’re coming with me?”

“Of course. I can’t let our champion get killed now, can I?” He turned to Oak. “Have you cleared this with Indigo Council.”

Oak nodded. “You have two weeks.”

“Hopefully that will be enough…” He smiled wryly. “Well, Ash, pick out your other six pokemon. You’ll need them if we’re facing Mewtwo.”

Ash nodded. Who else should he bring? H didn’t know the rest of his pokémon that well… hmm…

Zapdos? Definitely! Even if he had Raichu, Zapdos was a powerful legendary! So that meant Moltres would be coming as well…

            Maybe he could borrow Articuno?

He called Blaine and had it confirmed, and the bird was sent over. Good.

Agatha leant him one of her two Gengar, Lorelei her Jynx, as she heard Mewtwo was a psychic, and Bruno one of his Onix.

The two nodded as Ash’s Alakazam teleported them to the unknown dungeon…
