Chapter One “And that concludes our presentation. Until next time!” the TV in front of me finished. I just sat on my bed, staring at the screen. I was completely bored. I couldn't believe I was already. Summer vacation had started a week ago! I picked up the remote and turned off professor Rowan's show. I jumped off the bed, deciding to go see Roy, my friend next door. He's a nice guy, but he has ADD really, really, bad. He usually can't sit still and can barely gets any sleep. I guess he got it from his dad, Palmer... Anyway, I quickly got dressed, jeans and a pink and black shirt with a pink overcoat, brushed through my auburn hair, you know, got ready for the day. I then pulled on my big pink and white fluffy hat, my white scarf, and my pink snow boots, and ran outside. Despite my warm clothes, as soon as I reached outside, the cold hit me like a sledge hammer! 'Sinnoh sure has been cold lately,' I thought, walking to Roy's house next door. I reached his house and opened the door. Even though we weren't related, Roy's family treated us like we were, and we did the same. We've been that way since Roy and I were little. “Hello there!” Roy's mom cheerfully said. “Hi,” I replied back, running upstairs to Roy's room. It was the only one up there and it was really small. He didn't care though. When I got up there, I found him on his bed, apparently thinking about something. 'Funny, he never thinks,' I thought. He didn't really notice I'd come into the room. He was wearing a long sleeved white shirt with green stripes, jeans, and was barefooted. He was sitting Indian style on his bed. “Hey, Roy,” I said, trying to get him out of his trance. He only looked up at me for a second before asking, “hey, Holly! You wanna go get a pokemon from professor Rowan with me?!” “What?” I asked, dazed at how fast someone could ask a sudden question like that. I wasn't sure I was ready to go on a pokemon journey yet. I didn't go before because I was scared something would happen, such as getting lost, kidnapped, or even killed... but I figured if I went with someone I trusted, it'd be safer. I looked down at Roy, who sat there with a smile, waiting for my response. “Um, sure?” I answered. Before I could even think, Roy suddenly jumped up into the air, shouting, “yes!” and ran downstairs. As he went down, he yelled to me, “you'd better hurry Holly! Or you'll owe me ten million dollars!” I heard the door slam, and a cry of, “goodness! That boy!” Roy's mom doesn't understand why Roy's always so enthusiastic, and neither do I. I walked behind him, knowing he was kidding about the ten million. By the time I caught up, he was on the edge of our tiny town, Twinleaf. “There you are!” Roy yelled when he saw me. “You owe me!” “I do not!” I replied when I reached him. Roy only snickered and ran farther out. “C'mon!” he shouted to me. I chased after him until we reached a giant patch of tall grass. “Wait!” I exclaimed, stopping. “Don't wild pokemon live in there?” I pointed to it. “Well, yeah, they do,” Roy calmly said. “But if we run through it, they can't hurt us, right?” I looked at him, unsure I should believe him. He's only sometimes right. Like one time he thought beedrill were nice when we were six... anyway, I decided to believe him this time. Besides, only starly, bidoof, and a few shinx live around here. “Eh, what harm can it do?” I sarcastically said. “Okay, I'll go first,” he said, back up to get a running start. He started running at top speed before we heard a cry of, “hold it!” Roy stopped in his tracks, and tripped. “genius,” I mumbled under my breath. We looked behind us to see an old man with a beard in a brown coat, wearing a blue shirt and brown pants. “Woah! Its professor Rowan!” Roy shouted, instantly jumping back to his feet. “Yes, it's me, boy. You must be pretty foolish to run through tall grass without any pokemon, especially with this young lady,” he said, nodding to me. I smiled, flattered while Roy was flushed with embarrassment. “Professor!” someone shouted behind shouted. Coming up behind us was a boy a bit older then me with black hair wearing a red shirt, blue jeans, a blue coat, a big white scarf, and a funny looking red hat. “You forgot your briefcase,” he exclaimed, handing it to the professor. “Ah, yes. Thank you Lucas,” he said, taking it. 'Hey,' I thought to myself. 'He's kinda cute...' The man sighed. “Why would you two even think about doing something so foolish?” “Um, sir,” I started. “We were going to Sandgem to see you. We want to get our first pokemon.” Professor Rowan smiled. “Alright, that makes sense.” he said. He scratched his chin. He looked over at the suitcase on the ground, then at the three of us. “Do you three love pokemon?” he asked a bit suddenly. We were a bit surprised at the question. “Do we love pokemon? Heck yes we do!” Roy suddenly said enthusiastically. I glanced at him, surprised at his response. I could tell that boy, Lucas, and professor Rowan were too surprised. They had never seen Roy when he was terribly excited before. The professor, once again, stared at the suitcase, then us. He mumbled to himself, “Rowan, do you really want to do this? What would happen if these three kids went out into the world with pokemon? Hm...” he turned back to us. “Alright then, I suppose I can let each of you have a pokemon from this case.” “Wh...what?!” Lucas asked, flabbergasted. “B...but professor! These pokemon are important to your research!” “That doesn't matter,” the man answered. “These young pokemon have never seen the world before, and neither have you three. I'm going to let all three of you go with my blessing.” I'm pretty sure all of our eyes widened as the professor opened the case, took three pokeballs, and opened them. “These are the tree pokemon you three can choose from. Go ahead! Pick one!” he said happily. One of the three was a tiny turtle looking one with a sprout on its head called turtwig. “Turt! Turtwig!” it grunted. The second one was a blue penguin looking one with a big feather cape called piplup. “Pip! Piplup!” it squealed. The final one was what looked like a little chimpanzee with his rear on fire called chimchar. “Cheem! Chimchar!” it cried. The three sat on the ground, waiting to be chosen. I couldn't decide! “Um, you go first,” I said, pointing to Roy. He shook his head. “Nah, you choose first. To tell you the truth, I don't think I deserve a pokemon, I caused too much trouble.” I looked at him like he was crazy. “No, you deserve one too. I won't get one unless you do,” I told him sweetly. He smiled and nodded, but said, “I'll pick last.” my smile left. I looked down at the three tiny creatures on the ground. Which one... “I want...” I started. One of them was looking up at me with desperate, loving eyes, like it needed me... “chimchar,” I finished. It smiled up at me. “Cheem!” it squeeled happily, jumping up into my arms. I held the pokemon close. “Oh, yes, this little fellow is proud of his power. He loves battling, and being around his friends,” the professor explained. I looked at him. “Its a boy?” I asked. He nodded. I smiled at my chimchar. My pokemon. “I'll call you, Hiko!” I told him. “Cheemchar!” he exclaimed, smiling. Hiko then found his way onto my shoulder and sat up there happily. “Then,” Lucas said. “I want turtwig!” the little turtle smiled and ran up to him, jumping in his arms. Lucas laughed at the little pokemon. “Hm,” professor Rowan implied. “That one's usually very lazy. He must like you to have that kind of energy.” we smiled at his remark. Roy smiled, yet sighed. “That leaves me with piplup.” the little penguin smiled up at him and stayed by his side. “This one is a bit serious,” the man said. “but he always knows who his friends are.” he tilted his head. “You boys going to name your partners?” They shook their heads. “Nah, naming pokemon's too girly,” Roy answered. I glared at him angrily, but I smiled when I glanced at my Hiko. “You know, you don't even know my name,” I told him. “I'm Holly.” Lucas apparently heard me and he said, “and I'm Lucas.” “Turt,” turtwig smiled. Lucas sent one back. Roy looked down. “And I'm Roy,” he introduced. The piplup kept his serious face. Roy frowned. “Your going to have to be a bit happier if you want to join me,” he addded. Piplup gave him a fake smile. “Thats a bit better,” Roy remarked. “Well, I suppose you three need pokeballs, don't you?” the professor asked. We nodded. “Yeah, I'd like to have more pokemon,” I happily said. He smiled, and reached into his pocket. “Here,” he said, giving each of us five pokeballs. “Wow!” I exclaimed. “Can we use them now?” Roy asked. “Um, sure?” professor Rowan replied, confused. Roy then took one of the balls and threw it at Lucas! “Ow!” he yelled, as it hit him in the face. I covered my mouth with my hands, then I slapped my forehead. Why was Roy such a strange kid... “Oops! Your not a pokemon!” Roy laughed. Apparently he didn't like Lucas so much. That made me mad at him again. “You three need to tell your parents about you leaving together,” the professor said, a bit dazed at Roy's actions. I was a bit surprised at what he said. “Wait, together?” I asked. “Yes, journeying together is more fun, and much safer,” he answered. I sighed. I did like the idea of it being safer though. Lucas then spoke up. “How about we meet each other in Sandgem's pokemon center?” Roy and I looked at him. “You know? Then we can tell our parents and won't have to worry about missing each other.” “Sounds good to me,” I said. Roy only grunted in agreement. Lucas and the professor went back to Sandgem while Roy and I went back to Twinleaf. “You know, I'm not sure about that Lucas kid,” Roy was saying on the way back. “He seems suspicious.” “Nonsense,” I said, surprised. “He seems nice, and well behaved.” “He may only be that way around adults,” Roy replied. “I doubt it,” I said, shaking my head. “He seems like a nice guy.” I stroked Hiko's head as he sat on my shoulder. He seemed to purr with each stroke. Meanwhile, Roy's piplup followed behind us. It didn't really seem to mind falling behind. Roy turned around. “Piplup, your too serious,” he said, picking him up. We then continued walking. When we reached our houses, we said goodbye for now, and I walked inside. “Hey, mom!” I said, taking my shoes off. She was watching TV, so she didn't see Hiko walk up behind her. “Cheem!” Hiko squealed. I could've sworn she jumped a foot or two up in the air from fright. She looked onto the floor to see Hiko smiling up at her. “Um, dear, why is there a pokemon in the house?” she asked, recovering from shock. “Oh, this is Hiko, my chimchar,” I explained. Hiko waved at her.“I got him from professor Rowan.” Mom smiled. “Well, he's a cute little fellow,” she said, bending down to scratch his chin. He loved that, as he purred very loudly. I thought for a moment. How was I supposed to tell her I was leaving? “Uh, mom,” I started. “What would you say if I told you I'm going on a pokemon journey?” her smile left. She got up and hugged me. “Your going, aren't you?” she asked. I nodded, only for her to hug me tighter. “I'll miss you...” she cried. Wait, was she crying? She let go of me. “I'll let you go,” she said. Tears flooded her eyes. I just had to say something. “Mom, I won't be going alone,” I told her. “Two of my friends are going too.” “Really? Who?” “Roy, and a boy I just met named Lucas. He works with professor Rowan,” She smiled. She trusted Roy. “At least you won't be lonely,” she sighed. She gave me permission to leave, but she made me change my boots to ones that I could run in. “Bye! Have fun!” she called out to me as I left. So, with Hiko on my shoulder, I left for Sandgem. I know this was long, but hopefully enjoyable! The next chapter won't be up 'till next week, but I'll give ya'll a sneak peek! Here's a sneek peek of chapter two! :) Sheimi ...but then something strange happened. I heard voices I had never heard before. “Mes,” one exclaimed. It sounded like a girl... “Ux,” one asserted. This one sounded like it was wise... “Az,” the other screeched. That one reminded me of Lucas... I looked around me. There wasn't anyone close. “Cheem?” Hiko asked, concerned. I shook my head and continued on. “Where did that come from?” I wondered out loud. I felt like they were close, but they just seemed to disappear...
