Prologue

The Skarmory flew westward - a common routine. He felt the wind lift him suddenly, but adjusted his flight feathers with ease. The gust roared past skarmory effortlessly, and his head lowered in the monotony. Same old, same old. Had the been willing to sigh (and thus obtain a mouthful of sand), he would have, but he instead shifted his feathers further with a tickling irritation.

He looked downward, opening his eyes as far as he dared in the onrushing sand, and looked down upon the world.

Though this part of the desert remained unchanged, Skarmory remarked to itself that its territory was undeniably changing. There were colors now, seeping through the sepia landscape, that he had rarely seen before. Green peeked at the land's edges. Green sprouted out of spots in the desert. From Skarmory's current position, he would be unable to see those strange changes. And though, he thought, they weren't necessarily bad, he wasn't quite fond of them. Not at all.

But one thing Skarmory knew it would despise, though not quite fear, about the expansion of Green, was the inevitable expansion of Humanity right along side it. Green brought Gray. And where would he go, if his world was taken over by their endless pillars and sky-tall towers? Unacceptable, he said in a rustic voice to any who could hear over the rushing sand. They would be the end of us all.

"Skaaaaaaa..."

In his own way, he seemed to mourn. But he was cut short as the wind took an unexpected and terrifying turn for the worse. He tried to lift his wings, to extend his feathers, but the strongest of winds kept him from lifting a single, metal feather. Something was displacing the air. and fast.

He was struck by a piece of what it might have been only moments later.

Skarmory lifted himself from the ground, sand uselessly covering his wings, upon shaking them to rid himself of its weight, he turned and saw what had caused his sudden drop. A large...thing. Skarmory was unsure of how to describe it. It was already partially covered in sand from the place it had fallen on to. Skarmory noticed that the strong winds that had been surrounding him had stopped: he appeared to be on the leeward side of the abomination, sheltered from wind and sun.

This could be convenient, thought Skarmory. A resting place mid-journey.

He walked up to the abomination, and spied upon its hull a skrawl of Human text, something that few and far between could understand. Skarmory, of course, was one of those Pokemon that didn't. He had no need or reason to learn the strange runes they used to communicate, as if they saw each other so little that one would think they no longer had voices. That was false, of course. Humans were perfectly capable of speech and understanding everything but other sentient creatures. A Pokemon could understand a human with clarity some of those creatures didn't even have themselves. What pitiful, pitiful things. Skarmory had no sympathy.

But besides that, Skarmory was deeply troubled. The metal abomination could not have been the full force of what had knocked him out of the sky. It was not going nearly fast enough to displace the very storm. That giant shadow...it was definitely the abomination that stood before him. but no man-made thing could have done what had occurred that day...

Salamence dutifully struck itself against the ground, poisoned but far from defeated. The ground shook under Salamence's weight, and the ground shook violently. Both trainers seemed unfazed.

Metagross, opposite of Salamence, felt the ebb of the earth, but was so unbalanced that it was unable to levitate into the air. Even knowing this, it attempted to raise itself, only to fall again and again. As the earth calmed itself, Metagross was barely standing.

The trainer, without speaking, commanded the Pokemon. His face was shadowed and he stood fairly still in the chaos of the battle. His opponent was the same.

Metagross was weak against earthquake, so any attack should be able to...

The Pokemon immediately understood. Salamence, rose up, its wings amazingly lifting it into the air. it slammed its large bulk into Metagross sending it flying backwards. It fell to the ground and did not reawaken.

Metagross and its trainer, as expected in their defeat, dissolved into numbers, then into emptiness. The ruins that were their battleground was empty, but for the victor of the match. Salamence felt no joy, but its trainer was ecstatic. Another win. He smiled, though his face did not show it.

They dissolved as well.

"Excellent. His skill is quite high. So much like his father..."

"If only he trained his real Pokemon with such skill. I mean, that Eevee could be so much more powerful than it is..."

"Considering its level, that Eevee is as well-trained as it could be!"

"He seems to get a bit of cold feet in real battles..."

"But the simulation was completed flawlessly! He has talent, you must admit!"

"Yes. But still, he needs real-life experience. You can't just let him do simulation after simulation, get cocky, then lose on the battlefield."

"There's no reason for such. After all, Orre is peaceful. Orre is-"

"Since when has Orre been peaceful? We still harbor the same thugs as before..."

"But they are well-meaning."

"Usually."

"I guess we agree to disagree, then, right?"

"No, not quite. Your point is well made. However, you still plan on completing the Project, correct?"

"So is yours. And yes, of course I plan on completing the Project! Orre may be peaceful now, but if something is to happen, we must be ready to fight this time."

"And this boy...I know you were a friend of his father's, and you are honoring both his and the boy's wishes for training...but if something really is to happen, dare you let him get involved?"

"Yes. Because if there's one thing we can both agree on, it's that we can see good things in the future for Ryuuto."
