7: Delta Showdown

As the final match of the tournament draws close, Lorryn was getting anxious, because he believed that he didn’t do enough preparation and training for it. Although Christopher and his previous opponents had all assured him that he’ll do all right, as it wasn’t even an official tournament, he still worried too much… In fact, he thought it was only luck that brought him this far, into the final match, not that he had any superior skills.

On the day before the final match, Lorryn had decided to close his store for the day to do some last-minute preparations; on his way out to the forest, he met Christopher.

“Hey, Lorryn, you’re going for some more training, right?” He asked.

“Yeah, I know it’s a sure loss, but whatever… I’ll just try…” Lorryn answered rather pessimistically.

“Don’t say that, Lorryn!” Chris said, “You’ve gone this far because you have the skills, and luck of course. So don’t down your morale like that – not just before the match anyway.”

“Well, I know… but the other trainer must be at least as good as me, to get into the final match, too! And hearsay that none of her Pokémon is from Holon, and she has an EX as well, a super powerful one that single handedly took down her opponent’s whole team in her semi-final match… So, yeah, I doubt I’ll stand a chance against her…” Lorryn shrugged his shoulders and sighed, just like he always does.

“Sounds like your Blade, right? An EX that can take down a whole team…” Chris pointed out, “Anyway, do you know what Pokémon that EX is?” He asked.

“Well, Blade can only take out a team of three by itself, not a whole team of five! And I have no idea in hell what Pokémon she has – I will know when she beats me, or the other way round…” Lorryn replied cynically. “By the way, I’m not the only one registered with a Delta-Species; there’s another trainer as well, and something’s telling me that she’s the one with the other Delta-Species!”

“Don’t worry; if she uses her Delta, you use yours, and see who’s stronger!” Chris suggested, “Just hope her Delta isn’t that EX, though… If it is, you might have a tough nut to crack!”

“Please, I don’t need your sarcasm!” Lorryn declares, “I’ll just give my best, so if I do lose, there’s no regrets!”

“Now that’s the spirit, mate!” Chris patted him on the shoulder as a sign of encouragement. “Just give her all you’ve got, and let’s see who’s got more!”

The day of the final match finally came. Lorryn learned that his opponent was one of the Elite Four from the Orre Region; her name is Faye Remington. He knew that she was strong, very strong, but he never could have expected to face a member of the Elite Four in an unofficial tournament! But he also knew that he must try his best, and treat her just like any ordinary trainer that he had defeated.

Their match started. A coin-flip had decided that Faye gets to bring out her Pokémon first, and Lorryn second. Faye’s first Pokémon was a Meganium, a Grass-type, so Lorryn brought out his Alakazam, Psyche, who knows Fire Punch.

Faye announced her first attack, which was Grass Whistle, attempting to put Alakazam to sleep, but it failed as Lorryn countered with a defensive attack, Calm Mind. She then tried a Razor Leaf attack, but it was deflected by Alakazam’s Reflect.

It was Lorryn’s turn to attack, and he called for his first offensive attack. “Psyche, Teleport to its back and use Fire Punch!” He ordered. His Alakazam did as it was told, and attacked Meganium from behind; it scored a direct hit, and its Fire Punch burned Meganium, therefore Faye was forced to switch Pokémon.

“Well, that certainly wasn’t the EX…” Lorryn mumbled to himself.

“No one is stupid enough to begin a final match with their best Pokémon!” June replied from his side, but she was told by him to be quiet incase she attracts too much attention.

Faye withdrew her Meganium and brought out another Poké-Ball. “Go, Gengar, I choose you!” She releases her Gengar. “Use Shadow Ball,” She ordered.

“Teleport when it gets close, and use Psychokinesis from behind!” Lorryn shouted, “Be careful not to get hit!”

Lorryn’s trick worked again, and his Alakazam scored another direct hit from behind, and it knocked out Faye’s Gengar in one hit. Faye didn’t seem so intimidating to him anymore, at least, not until she brought out her best Pokémon…

“One down, four to go…” Lorryn commented to reduce his stress level.

On the other hand, Faye wasn’t worried at all when her Gengar was beaten in one hit; she called it back into the Poké-Ball, and pulled out her third one. “Go, Umbreon!”

Lorryn knew that she’d bring out something to counter his Alakazam, so he called it back, and replaced it with his Crawdaunt. “Go, Claws, use Bubble Beam!” He decided to make the first move.

Crawdaunt fired an array of bubbles into Umbreon’s side. Faye told her Umbreon to use Protect to avoid damage, and then called for a counterattack. “Umbreon – use Hyper Beam!”

That caught Lorryn by surprise – although he was not very experienced himself, he had never heard of an Umbreon using Hyper Beam before; considering Umbreon’s weak offensive power, even a critical hit won’t do much damage, not to a Crawdaunt’s hard shell anyway. Lorryn thought that he could take advantage of that, and force Umbreon to attack repeatedly until it wears itself out. “Claws, use Harden and then Taunt!” He ordered.

Crawdaunt hardened its shell and blocked the Hyper Beam without taking any significant damage, and then it used Taunt and provoked Umbreon into firing another Hyper Beam without Faye ordering it to. Crawdaunt just simply sidestepped to avoid the attack. Umbreon had become quite exhausted after firing two consecutive Hyper Beams; it stood there, panting… Lorryn thought that Faye would make another substitution at that point, but she didn’t, so he ordered Crawdaunt to finish it off with a Crab Hammer.

“Hah, two down, three more to go!” Lorryn was getting rather excited over it, as he had all five of his Pokémon in good shape, while Faye only had two. He began to wonder what sort of a region Orre is, as Faye’s performance was certainly not what one would expect from a member of the Elite Four!

“Don’t get too excited just yet,” June warned him, “she’s saving her best Pokémon for last, and you know it!”

“Yeah, I know…” He whispered back, “but don’t worry, no matter how strong her last Pokémon is, it has no chance against all five of us!” He seemed to be more and more confident.

In the mean time, Faye chose her fourth Pokémon, which was a Chimecho – a normal one, not a Delta-Species. Lorryn was again puzzled; why would she use a Psychic-type to fight against a partly Dark-type like Crawdaunt? He thought.

“Chimecho – use Double Edge on Crawdaunt!” Faye announced her attack.

Ah, I see! Lorryn thought, she’s trying so hard to take out Claws – her last Pokémon must be weak against either Water or Dark-type! No, I mustn’t let Claws go down! “Claws – return!” He made his second substitution. “Go, Bane!” He called out his Shuppet, a Ghost-type, and Chimecho’s Double Edge failed to hit it.

“It’s my turn now; use Skill Swap!” Lorryn ordered.

Shuppet used Skill Swap and gained the Levitate ability from Chimecho; Chimecho, on the other hand, lost its Levitate ability, and gained Insomnia from Shuppet. However, without its Levitate ability, Chimecho’s mobility had been severely handicapped, as it could no longer float in midair, and it has no legs to walk on the ground, either.

Still, Faye didn’t show a hint of anxiety. “Chimecho – use Shadow Ball!”

“No you don’t! Bane – use Imprison!” Lorryn shouted. His Shuppet used Imprison and sealed Chimecho’s Shadow Ball. “Now, finish it with Night Shade!” So Shuppet did; it knocked Chimecho out with a direct hit from Night Shade.

Ha-ha! It’s three down already! I’ve pretty much won this match already! Lorryn thought, her Meganium is burned, and her last one must be that EX, but I have two EX’s on my side!

However, June seemed to be worried. “Lorryn, just look at her – she isn’t even worried when three of her Pokémon are down already, so I’ll say her last one is really something to watch out for!” She whispered to Lorryn, who was getting overconfident.

Faye’s next Pokémon was as expected, her Meganium, which was burned by Alakazam’s Fire Punch. She told it to use Aromatherapy to heal its burn, and Lorryn took that chance and scored a hit with Shadow Ball, but it didn’t seem to do much damage. Lorryn knew that his Shuppet had no chance against her Meganium, so he decided to do a suicide attack and take it out with Shuppet’s Destiny Bond.

“Go, Bane – use Double Edge on Meganium!” Lorryn shouted across the stadium.

Faye called for a counterattack as Shuppet shot towards Meganium like a bullet. “Meganium – use Frenzy Plant and take it down!”

“Great! Now, use Destiny Bond, and take the hit!” Lorryn bellowed.

Shuppet stopped rushing and took the hit from Meganium’s Frenzy Plant; it was knocked out, however, its Destiny Bond took Meganium down along with it. That left Faye with only her last Pokémon, and Lorryn with four.

“Thanks, Bane; you’ve done an excellent job! Now, have a good rest.” Lorryn called Shuppet back into its Poké-Ball, and then, he replaced it with his Crawdaunt, knowing that Faye’s last Pokémon must be weak against it.

“So you think you’ve won, huh, Lorryn?” Faye asked in a provoking tone. “Think again, because the fun has just begun! Now, show him what we’ve got, Flarie!” She held a fire-red sphere in the palm of her right hand, and a red ray shot down onto the floor of the stadium. A Pokémon materialized from that ray.

“What?” Exclaimed Lorryn and June simultaneously, “It can’t be…!”

To their biggest surprise yet, Faye’s last Pokémon was a Gardevoir, but it looked so much different from June, or any other Gardevoirs they’ve seen. It had a fiery red aura burning around its body, and its eyes shone with a bright red glow; it was no doubt a Delta-Species!

“I knew it; her last Pokémon must be weak against Claws!” Lorryn said to June, trying to regain his overwhelming confidence. June shut her eyes and shook her head; she didn’t want to say anything. She had a feeling that it would eventually get down to a duel between her and that Delta-Species…

While Lorryn was talking to June, Faye’s Gardevoir, Flarie, used a Blast Burn on the stadium, creating a Full Flame on the battlefield, which makes Pokémon within it twice as likely to get burned, and take twice the damage from burns; also, it powers up Fire-type attacks and reduces the effectiveness of Water-type attacks.

“What the heck, a Fire-type Gardevoir? Or is it just playing around with fire? You’d better not be, or you’ll get burned!” Lorryn commented as he saw Flarie acted without receiving any orders from Faye.

“Flarie, you know what to do! Now, let’s win this match!” That was all Faye said to him…

Hmm… she seems to be full of herself… Lorryn thought. However, due to the overwhelming advantage in the number of usable Pokémon at hand, he didn’t flinch at all. “Go, Claws,” he shouted, “use Surf and put out that fire!”

Crawdaunt summoned a huge tidal wave in attempt to extinguish the fire inside the stadium, but it failed completely, as the whole of its Surf was evaporated by the Full Flame. Crawdaunt was stunned, so was Lorryn… Flarie took this chance and scored a clean hit on Crawdaunt with Will-o-Wisp, and badly burned it.

Lorryn ordered Crawdaunt to get back up and try to score a hit with Double Edge before it goes down. Crawdaunt agreed, and in spite of its burn, charged recklessly towards Flarie. Flarie responded by initiating an Overheat attack; his fiery aura burned brighter and more intense, and he, too, recklessly charged, towards Crawdaunt. Of course, the badly burned Crawdaunt didn’t stand a chance against Flarie’s full-power Overheat attack within the circle of Full Flame; it was knocked right out of the stadium and crashed into the Gym wall. It was unable to continue to battle, so Lorryn had to withdraw it and replace it with another Pokémon…

“Be careful with that Full Flame,” June warned him quietly, “it allows Fire-types to use Overheat over and over again without losing its power! Use your Armaldo’s Sandstorm to put it out as soon as possible, or we’ll be in trouble!”

“No, I’ll use Psyche to tire it out first, and save Blade for later. That thing’s obviously at a higher level than Blade!” Lorryn said. He took out his Alakazam’s Poké-Ball and released it onto the stadium. “Psyche,” he ordered, “use Thunder Wave to par…”

“No, don’t!” June cut in, “You’ll end up paralyzing Alakazam – remember, we have the Synchronize ability! And Special Conditions won’t last long on Fire-types in the Full Flame!”

“All right, use Psychokinesis then!” Lorryn quickly changed his order, as Flarie was charging for another Overheat attack.

Alakazam used Psychokinesis and disrupted Flarie’s Overheat; it knocked him back slightly. …So, it doesn’t have much Psychic resistance… Lorryn learned from Alakazam’s attack. Meanwhile, Alakazam used another Psychokinesis attack and psychically took control of Flarie’s body, and lifted him up into the air. Flarie seemed to be struggling to free himself, and he finally did with a Double Team. Copies of Flarie spouted from the flames and surrounded Alakazam, who was getting paranoid as more and more copies kept being produced…

“Damn! This isn’t good!” Lorryn cursed under his breath, “I won’t know which the real one is! Unless… yes, why not!” He came up with an idea. “Psyche, use your Double Team as well!”

This battle had become a battle of illusory copies as both battlers fought with their images, however, it was not long until Flarie spotted the real Alakazam and knocked it down with a Flame Ball. All Alakazam’s images had disappeared, but Flarie’s remained. Lorryn kept his eyes fixed on the one that used the Flame Ball, because he knew that must be the real one, so he ordered Alakazam to focus another Psychokinesis attack onto that one…

While their battle progressed, Chris was on his break and he came to watch them in the Gym. He pulled out his updated version of the PokéDex, which has the full scanning ability that determines the subject’s detailed statistics as well as their species and type. Chris scanned Faye’s Delta-Species with it, and the results came up like this:

            Species: Gardevoir

            Gender: Male

            Type: Fire/Steel (Delta-Species Category B)

            Level: 157 (EX+57)

            Nature: Adamant

ID: 34107/021

            OT: Faye Remington

            Statistics:

-         HP: 475 (0)

-         Attack: 795 (504)

-         Defense: 225 (0)

-         Special Attack: 347 (0)

-         Special Defense: 401 (12)

-         Speed: 473 (504)

“Hah, no worries,” he muttered, “Lorryn’s one is at a higher level, and its nature and type combination don’t benefit itself at all! But his Alakazam won’t stand a chance, though… Nah, he’ll be all right…”

Chris was right; Lorryn’s Alakazam was taken down easily by a barrage of Flame Balls from that Delta-Species, and none of them was even a direct hit. It was time he switched to his trusted Armaldo. But before he did, June told him that she’d go and end the match, as she claimed that she’d perceived their enemy’s main weakness…

“Hey, wait, June! Are you sure you can take him on? You’re weak against its fire, aren’t you?” Lorryn was concerned, “shouldn’t I put out that fire with Blade’s Sandstorm first? That’ll help, at least…” He asked while still holding his Armaldo’s Poké-Ball in hand.

“No. Leave the fire there, and I know how to use it to my advantage. Trust me; I can beat him in no time!” June sure was confident. She leaped into the stadium and continued their battle.

“Hey, just be careful, okay?” Lorryn shouted to her. She nodded with a sly smile on her face.

“Being able to talk doesn’t mean anything in a battle, Lorryn; it’s the skills that count!” Faye said, “Plus, all Psychic-types can use telepathy to communicate with people, so learning our language is a piece of cake for them.” It was obvious that she wasn’t aware of that June was a Delta-Species as well, and having heard that, June thought she could take advantage of her unawareness also, by not using any of her special attacks until it’s absolutely necessary.

“Well, enough talk; let’s get our battle going then.” Lorryn said, “Anyway, I trust that you know what to do, June.”

“Just leave it to me!” June replied. She started by bombarding Flarie’s side of the stadium with an array of Shadow Balls, they exploded into the flames, creating a screen of black smoke that blocked Flarie’s vision.

Flarie, fearing that June would counter his attacks with Psychokinesis, didn’t recklessly use the Overheat attack, but tried to clear the smoke with another storm of Flame Balls. From her position, June could easily see Flarie’s attacks clearly, and she simply evaded those Flame Balls and scored a direct hit with a Shadow Ball, which again, created a miasma. That was the time June used her Torment attack that Lorryn taught her with the TM-41, and disabled Flarie’s Flame Ball for a while, and bought herself enough time to execute her strongest attack…

8. Doom Desire

The Full Flame on the battlefield raged on, and a gust of ominous and miraculous wind blew across. June used Iron Defense, along with a Light Screen, to create a translucent steel shell and shield herself in it, while she channeled the Steel-type’s ultimate attack – the most feared, decisive Doom Desire…

Faye wrongly recognized it as a simple Future Sight attack, which can be avoided with some caution, so she encouraged Flarie not to worry and attack head on with Overheat, as June seemed to be very vulnerable when channeling her ability. So Flarie did; he charged right into June’s protective barrier with an Overheat attack, but it failed to break through; he was knocked back due to the impulse from that collision. At the same time, June’s channeling was complete; she shattered her barrier with Brick Break and slammed into Flarie with her Metal Claw while waiting for the Doom Desire to activate. And it did, right after Flarie was knocked down by the Metal Claw…

Another gust of ominous wind sliced through the stadium. However, this time the flames spouted much higher and burned more viciously. The wind blew those flames towards Flarie’s direction, and he was completely surrounded by those raging flames in no time. Being a part Steel-type, Flarie wasn’t that resistant to Fire, and he began to panic in those fierce flames that he created himself. Faye shouted to him and ordered him to get out of the flames immediately, but he was too afraid to move, plus the strong wind was constantly pushing him back into the wall; he had nowhere to run…

June’s eyes lit up with a bright red glow, and the forceful wind turned into thousands of ethereal spears and blades that pierced into Flarie’s body…

The flames extinguished, and the wind subsided. Those spears and blades dissipated into thin air, leaving Flarie fainted under the back wall of the stadium. There hasn’t been a single Pokémon known to have endured a direct hit from Doom Desire and was able to continue to battle, and that is why that decisive attack had been given such a menacing name. However, there was not many Pokémon that have ever pulled off that attack successfully, let alone scoring a critical hit with it.

“Well, it looks like I’ve lost the match. Your Pokémon had an obvious level advantage over mine, but we’ve both given our best, so I have no regrets. The Holon Gym is yours to run, Lorryn, and I hope you can manage to run it well.” Faye said to Lorryn as she recalled her Delta-Species back into that fiery red sphere…

An explosion of cheering applause echoed from the spectator seats as June threw herself into Lorryn’s arms. “I’ve done well, haven’t I?” She gave him a loving embrace and rested her head onto his shoulder. “Yes, June. You’ve done very well, thank you…” Lorryn replied with a low voice; he wasn’t sure whether he should accept the place as the leader of Holon’s only official Pokémon Gym, as he believed that he’d only won because of June, who was not even officially his Pokémon, and without her, he’d never have defeated Faye’s overpowering Delta-Species Gardevoir that had almost single-handedly taken her through the entire tournament… He finally made up his mind, and stopped Faye while she was leaving the stadium…

“Hey, wait up! I don’t think I deserve to be the leader of this Gym, because I didn’t win the match with my own skills, or even luck. I won only because of June, and believe it or not, she’s not even my Pokémon; she’s only an old friend of mine that decided to join my team just to fulfill the five-Pokémon requirement for this tournament. So, to be strict, I shouldn’t even be here in the first place, because I only have four Pokémon of my own, and I think you should take over this Gym, because you have the skills that I don’t…”

They went home, after a whole day of excitement and exhaustion at the tournament. Lorryn left all his Pokémon at the nearest Pokémon Center for treatment and recovery, and he himself went to bed much earlier than usual for some real rest and relaxation after his intense battle with Faye. June sat on the bed, by his side, puzzled by his actions earlier; she couldn’t figure out why on earth would Lorryn give up on being the leader of the Gym after he won the match fair and square, and it had been bothering her all the way home…

“Hey, Lorryn,” she finally decided to ask him directly, “why did you give the place of the Gym leader to her even after you won the match? I mean, isn’t it why you went into the tournament, to become the leader of Holon’s official Gym?”

“Yes, but I realized that I don’t have what it takes to become a proper Gym leader. I don’t even have much battling experience, and there’s no way a Gym leader can ask for assistance from a friend during an official Gym match, like what I did in the tournament.” Lorryn explained, “You know what, it was my fault asking you to join in the first place, and I’m happy just doing what I’m doing now. Nevertheless, that tournament’s been a good experience for both of us, right?”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right…” June sighed in disappointment as she lay herself down beside Lorryn.

“Okay, let’s change the subject a little. How were you so confident that you could defeat that Fire-type Delta-Species? And what exactly was its ‘main weakness’ that you found?” Lorryn asked her the question that was puzzling him.

“Well, it was simple. He was actually a little afraid of fire; he only set up that Full Flame to power up his attacks, and to intimidate his opponents at the same time. I realized that as soon as he set up the fire, from how he always kept away from the flames, so I thought I could take advantage of that and use his own fire against him.” June explained; it didn’t even seem half as obvious to Lorryn as it did to her…

“Hah! You are one smart girl, June!” Lorryn praised her to cheer her up, “Oh, by the way, I never knew you could use that attack – the Doom Desire. I’ve heard that the only Pokémon can naturally learn it is Jirachi. Well, you sure are something different…” He yawned; he was stressed out.

“Yeah, I learned that attack a long time ago. I didn’t actually learn it; I mean I just knew it for some reason. But the thing is, I didn’t even know that I could use it until that time where I had to use it to protect myself from the… um, never mind, you wouldn’t want to know anyway…” June had decided not to talk about the past, because she knew that it would upset Lorryn, and she didn’t want that to happen, at least not right after the tournament, as he was tired and needed a good rest.

“What was it, June?” Lorryn was as expected, curious. “You had to protect yourself from what?” He asked.

“No; never mind that. It’s a long story, and I don’t really want to talk about it now, so, please, don’t worry about it, and get some rest…” June said; she knew that she should never have mentioned it, but she didn’t want to lie about it either.

However, that had only made Lorryn more curious, and he was determined to find out how and why she used the Doom Desire to protect herself, and what from. “Oh, come on, tell me, please, I want to know, plus, I ain’t that tired, all I did was standing there and issuing orders…”

June knew that there was no way she could get away without telling him, as she knew how adamant Lorryn can get sometimes, especially when he is on the urge to find out about things that he is interested in. So she had to give in and tell him briefly about that event from a long time ago…

“All right, if you insist…” She started her account of the past, “it was that time when Holon was just an abandoned island with a laboratory, just like the Institute now, but much smaller. It was also abandoned, of course, and there was some sort of a reactor running constantly on the roof of that building. That reactor created an electromagnetic barrier that bends light, and that barrier was like a shield, surrounding the entire island, so it was invisible from afar. That’s how it protected us from outsiders, especially people that want to capture us and experiment on us. Anyway, whether that’s true or not, it’s what I’ve been told when I came here.

“But one day, that reactor broke down or something, it just stopped going, so our barrier was down as well. And soon after that, some people found their way onto this island, and they started capturing us like mad. I was scared, so I ran into the deserted lab building and hid from them. Those people had been on this island for over a week, and I was too afraid to go out incase I get caught. But there wasn’t any food in the lab, so I had to go out to get some berries. I didn’t know those people had their surveillance cameras hanging all over the forest, so they found me as soon as I went out, and they started chasing me with their Houndooms and Crobats, and they all had a strange black aura around their body. I knew there was no way I could fight them all, so I did possibly the most stupid thing I’ve ever done – I ran straight back into the lab, the only safe place I found! But where else could I run to?

“They chased me into the lab, of course, and they blocked the only entrance to stop me from running away, so I could only run upstairs. They finally chased me to the top of the roof, where the reactor was, and there I really had no way to run. They blocked the stairway, and surrounded me with their strange Pokémon. They were making fun of me, saying that they’ll let me go if I can defeat all their Pokémon at the same time, otherwise they’ll catch me and do ‘those things’ to me – I had no idea what things they meant. I knew it was impossible to fight all of them at the same time, and they were using some of the strangest attacks that I’ve never even heard of – something like ‘Shadow Wave’ and ‘Shadow End’. That giant reactor was the only thing I could use to shield myself against their attacks, but as I ran close to that reactor, I felt some immense awakening power that could allow me to free myself.

“I did exactly what I did earlier in the match – I used Light Screen and Iron Defense to shield myself from their weird attacks, and somehow I just used the Doom Desire and defeated all of them. I don’t know how I did it, I just did, so they kept their words and let me go; they were actually scared of me as I could see. It must’ve had something to do with that reactor, but don’t worry about it now, because it was removed when they rebuilt the lab into the Research Institute.” June knew that she had to finish her story quickly, or else she wouldn’t be able to.

“Um… just one thing – what were you then?” Lorryn asked. She was surprised that it was his only question, but she didn’t understand what he meant.

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“Oh, I mean, were you a Ralts or a Kirlia at that time?”

“Why? I was what I am now; I’ve been through my Ralts and Kirlia stages long before that happened, but I can’t seem to remember anything before I evolved…” She said.

“Okay… just how old are you, really? You’re definitely older than me if you’ve seen the old lab… I’ve only heard about it when I was little.” Lorryn asked.

June realized that it was only a head start to Lorryn’s volley of questions that was bound to come, so she had to use the apparently most effective method to do so – with temptation… “Well, about 165 years, if that’s what you’re asking. But isn’t it fashionable to have an older girlfriend these days…?” She snuggled up to him and wound her arms around his neck…

“Uh… June, y… you’re missing the point…” Lorryn didn’t know how to react… And that effectively stopped him from asking further questions.

“Come on, stop worrying about the past, just relax and have some rest… At least you know I’m here by your side, right…? And you know that I love you…” June rested her head onto Lorryn’s chest, with her arms still around his neck. But when Lorryn reached up his hand to caress her, she grabbed it and laid it onto her chest, and forced him to caress her soft mounds… She knew that her physical charms always work the best in calming him down and making him feel contented, but not necessarily relaxed…

June’s actions made Lorryn quiver in shock. Oh! This is totally wrong! He thought, what does she think she’s doing? Just because she’s not a person it doesn’t mean she can do whatever she likes…! But… she does feel so good though, and she’s so beautiful, and so cute… I know this is wrong, but I want her so much! Therefore, he unconsciously gave her a gentle kiss on her forehead, and pulled her up closer to him, while his other hand glided all over her warm and flexible body. It was the first time in his life he experienced this extraordinarily irresistible pleasure – the unique pleasure from a quenched sexual desire… Now, he wouldn’t even imagine what if June was an actual person, or any other what-ifs, because he knew that she is not a real person, thus their love and pleasures could only advance so far. So, when there’s a preset limit to their immorality, and for as long as they’re satisfied, what else is there for him to worry about, and what could ever stop them from enjoying themselves to the fullest?

… Only if they knew that the shadow of an apocalypse was about to fall onto their very own paradise of Holon

9. Dragon Invasion

The “Alpha-Species”, a name given to a group of eleven nemeses resulted in the failed project by the codename of “Angel”, have run wild once again, after their 150 years of imprisonment beneath the deserted laboratories in the Under City of Orre. In fact, after the first time they escaped the laboratories, not all of them were recaptured; Number One and Number Two had escaped to other distant regions right after they freed themselves, and they were never found again. However, as they had not yet known to have caused any further damages or fatalities, they were falsely classified by the Shadow Research Institute as “dead”, instead of “missing”, only to avoid further criticisms against the Institute.

Those Alpha-Species, or “The Angels” as they were widely known back then, are actually genetically mutated Pokémon created by the Shadow Research Institute. They were proposed to be the “true ancestors” of all Shadow Pokémon – the most perfect Shadow Pokémon that can never be purified; they were so perfect that they were given the names of angels. That is, until the day they turned hostile onto their creators and deserted the laboratories in which they were created, and all that had happened before the final stage of their project was complete. It was the stage during which those Pokémon’s minds were to be configured so that they would obey their creators – the researchers in the Institute – and only them…

Holon, along with all other regions, had recently been warned that the Alpha-Species have broken free once again, and that they were to be captured or exterminated at all costs, preferably before they do any significant damage or cause any fatality. However, the current Orre Research Institute didn’t have adequate details about those Alpha-Species as they were always kept in their special Poké-Balls known as the Sanctuary Balls beneath the ruins of the old laboratories; they didn’t even know what species those Pokémon are, but they knew enough to make the public concerned…

Firstly, it was clear that all those Alpha-Species are evolved Pokémon-EX at extremely high levels, and they all have the same type combination that benefit from the essences of both darkness and metal – Dark and Steel, which theoretically renders them very vulnerable to Fighting-types, but, it was guaranteed that they have some special ways to overcome that weakness. Secondly, it was told that some of the Alpha-Species might not be aware that they are what they are, until the conditions are nominal; but what type of conditions they need to awaken their hidden dark souls were unknown. In addition to that, the media have published a list of the names, along with their corresponding numbers that were inscribed on those Sanctuary Balls, which were found miraculously empty when the last time the Institute people checked; they were named as angels according to their numbers:

            Number Three – Trinitas

            Number Four – Laguna

            Number Five – Damael

            Number Six – Zadifor

            Number Seven – Azurael

            Number Eight – Octael

            Number Nine – Nanoel

            Number Ten – Dagon

            Number Eleven – Omegael

As the numbers One and Two were assumed as dead, their Sanctuary Balls were destroyed long time ago. However, from the records found in the ruins of the old lab, the researchers found out that the names of numbers One and Two were Ariel and Lilith respectively, and that Ariel was a Tyranitar, and Lilith was a Gardevoir. They have also found some of the other Angels’ species from those old records soon after, but that was only for four of them: Trinitas is a Dragonite, Laguna is a Kingdra, Damael is a Flygon, and Zadifor is a Salamence. They were said to be quite easy to spot because they all have the same types, and they might act very differently from other Pokémon of their species as well…

“Hah! What a chance for people to show off their ‘elite skills’ on those 150-year old runaways… How interesting…” Lorryn commented as he heard the recent news about those Alpha-Species “Angels”. He didn’t take that any more seriously than he did a chance to “show off”; in fact, he thought that they are just like the relatively harmless Delta-Species – after all, they are only genetically modified Pokémon.

“Well, if you had a choice, which one would you be after, Lorryn?” Chris asked as he visited his shop to buy a potion.

“None of them… We’ve only identified four – or six if you like; and there are still others that we don’t even know the species of… Anyway, giving them fancy names doesn’t make them any stronger, you know…” Lorryn was all cynical about this matter. “But if I had a choice between those we know, I’ll say I might go for the Flygon, because it’s the only one of them that I can’t catch in Holon. Still, I’ll say just forget about them – it’s not like there will be one of them in here. Even if there is, it won’t be sitting there waiting for me, because it’ll get caught by those skilled lucky ones, ha-ha…” He only took that as a joke, and little more…

“Heh, thought you’re gonna get the Ariel, just to show the world how great Lorryn the High Elf is… well, I might be wrong…” Chris joked as he reached for his wallet to pay for the potion. “By the way, you know what – you should really get Lilith, then you’ll have heaps of fun at night…”

“Huh? Lilith, what the heck is that? I don’t like the sound of its name though; it’s like some sort of a… succubus or something… Nah, no way, I’m not asking for any more trouble than I have now!” Lorryn was deterred just by the name; he thought about his immorally-advancing relationship with June, and shook his head. “Hey, don’t you have anything better to do, Chris? It’s useless talking about those Alpha-Species, as what are the chances that they’ll visit us here in Holon? Pretty fat, I say!”

Chris agreed and headed back into the Institute, but just before he left, he said, “I heard that Lilith is a Gardevoir – that might make you change your mind; but I doubt she’ll be half as cute as your lovely little June…”

Lorryn forced out a fake chuckle at Chris’ not-so-funny comment, he thought, if I have the luck to meet one of the only eleven Alpha-Species, then I’d have a whole bunch of shiny Pokémon by now… ha-ha…

Obviously, June has heard about the news as well, and something extra that Lorryn might not want to know. She came to his flat that evening and told him that there was an Alpha-Species that escaped to Holon on flight; it was identified as Omegael, a shiny black Charizard.

“Well, did anyone catch it?” That was the first question Lorryn asked.

“What? Catch it? No way! It was far too strong even for people to get close to it! They say it’s at level 187, and that’s just insane for a wild Pokémon flying around… I hope the authorities do something about it quick, or it is gonna wreck the whole island if that keeps up…” June replied, emphasizing on the fact that those Alpha-Species did not get locked away for over 150 years for nothing. “We’re lucky that it’s only flying around over the west coast areas, because if that thing gets into the residential area, it’s gonna demolish it in seconds!”

“No bloody way! Someone must be making those things up! No matter how high their levels are, they’re still Pokémon, not demons from hell! Tell me where that Charizard is and I’ll go get that damn thing outta here!” Lorryn, who did not want to get involved in this, has finally decided to give it a try, because he realized that it was his luck that gave him a chance to see and battle one of the rarest Pokémon there is, and he didn’t want to miss it. However, whether he has the courage and skills to confront it in a real battle after he sees it, still remains a question.

“No, don’t! You’ll get yourself killed if you’re not careful! Believe it or not, those things have killed people back the last time they escaped – they killed everyone in the old lab at Orre, and turned that place into total ruins in just one night!” June warned him of how dangerous those Alpha-Species could be.

“How did you know so much about them?” Lorryn asked her instinctively, not realizing that it could be one of the hardest questions for her to answer…

“Err… well, I do seem to have a faint memory of that time when they broke out of the lab – I might even have been there. But after I came to Holon, I sort of lost my memories of those old times…” June answered; she didn’t even know whether those memories were real or imaginary. “Anyway, I’m certain that it was the reason I came to Holon, because I wanted to escape that dreadful place, especially after I saw what people can do by abusing their so-called ‘technology’…” She said.

“So you’re not from here?” Lorryn asked.

“Not really,” she answered, “I don’t even know where I was born – I just can’t remember – but I know I was in Orre before I came here. I couldn’t remember anything about the time when I was in Orre, except that incident in the old Shadow Research Institute…”

“Oh, okay, that incident must’ve been pretty terrifying for you, considering you were only so young back then… People do sometimes lose their short-term memories when they’re terrified, but I don’t know about Pokémon – maybe we’re all the same…” Lorryn commented sympathetically. “Well, maybe I shouldn’t go after all – it’s not a good day to die…”

On the second day, media reported that the Charizard was ensnared by an electrified net, and then captured in a Master Ball by the officials of Holon. Although a few casualties were resulted as that Charizard burst into an Outrage, its capture provided a huge relief for the residents. The Master Ball was successfully shipped back to the Orre Institute that evening, under extreme levels of security and surveillance. It seems like with their newly developed Master Ball, there is no Pokémon they can’t catch, and that’s why those balls are supplied in such limited numbers.

Just a week after the Charizard incident, rumors were spreading in Holon that someone saw another strange Pokémon around the south seas of Holon. It was a Kingdra, and it was said to be another of the eleven Alpha-Species – Laguna, and it has been stirring up storms in the sea and summoning twisters towards the southern shores, but it didn’t cause any casualties or wreckages.

“Okay, now that’s strange – why are they invading Holon of all places? It’s not like they’re after something here… or is it?” Lorryn asked as he heard the media reports in his shop.

“Well, I wouldn’t have a clue, mate!” Chris answered, “They may be after the Miracle Crystal in the forest, or they may be after the old reactor, and they may even be after someone in particular…”

“I wouldn’t be surprised if they are after you…” Lorryn muttered.

“Ah, come on, mate! Relax! It might just be a coincidence!” Chris said.

“Let’s just hope so…” Lorryn sighed…

As soon as Lorryn closed his mouth, his old TV buzzed again with news updates saying that more strange Dragon Pokémon have been found around Holon: a Dragonite in the Phantom Meadows, a Flygon around the metropolitan area, a Salamence above the eastern seas, and the Altaria, knows as Azurael, hovering high above the island. They were all members of the eleven Alpha-Species, and they appeared to be circling the entire island of Holon around its shores, with that Altaria on top. As the officials say, it’s now obvious that they were searching for something, because none of them had yet posed any threat to any people or Pokémon in and around Holon; but the question remains: what exactly are they after?

On the evening news of that same day, it said that the officials had just found out that the Charizard they caught the other day was not actually a true Alpha-Species; in fact, it was the old Shadow Research Institute’s last and failed experiment, and it was easily purified. So, Omegael is not that Charizard, in other words, it was still on the loose.

“Well, that’s some helpful news, isn’t it?” Lorryn drew June’s attention to the TV.

“What do you mean by ‘helpful’?” She asked; she wasn’t really listening to the news at all…

“It is, because I’ve heard about those real Alphas out there today – they never attacked anyone, they were just circling around Holon, with an Altaria on top, and searching for something, I don’t know what, though.” Lorryn explained, “You know what that means? They aren’t like that Charizard we’ve seen, or say, they aren’t as bad as we think they are!”

“Oh, really?” June was rather surprised to hear that, “don’t tell me they’re all here now… I mean, what could they be after anyway?”

“No, not all of them are here. And, Holon is the place where the Delta-Species originated from, right? So in my opinion, they might have something to do with you guys – they are also genetically modified Pokémon after all!” Lorryn said.

“And your point is…?” June asked; she didn’t understand how those Alpha-Species could be connected to them.

“My point is that if you’re both genetically modified species, then there must be something that you both share. For example, the fact that you’re both different from those normal Pokémon out there, or in your own words, you’re both ‘outcasts’.  So, I think that they could somehow sense your presence here in Holon, and they’re just simply coming to join the group in which they think they belong.” Lorryn expressed his opinions towards those Alpha-Species invading Holon.

“To be completely honest with you, I could sense them, somehow, but very faintly, and it seems to me like they are not only searching for something, they are also trying to summon, or awaken, someone. You said those Alpha-Species are not all here yet, so I think they are calling upon the rest of their team, or group – whatever you call it…” June suddenly turned serious, “Anyway, I’m sure that I can sense them, and, from those shattered fragments of my past memories, I think… I think that… Oh, never mind…” She hanged her head and sighed…

What June said earlier all seemed to make sense to Lorryn now, and he was beginning to grow concerned about her, because he didn’t want her to suffer anymore…

“What is it, June? Please, tell me, what is it?” Lorryn questioned her with great anxiety, “Well, it’s not what I think it is… right?”

“I don’t really know…” June muttered, “But I think I have some connections with them, because I know so much about them in the past while I don’t even know why, and, just look, I even share the same type combination with them…”

“Huh…? How did you know what types they are? Did someone tell you?” Lorryn was really surprised that June knew so much about those mysterious Pokémon. “Anyway, are they all Dark-and-Steel?” He asked curiously.

“Yeah, they all are, same as me.” June said, “But don’t ask me how I knew it, because I don’t know either. I mean, I just knew all those things that I probably shouldn’t, that’s why… that’s why I think… that I’m… one of them!” She finally gathered enough courage to say it out, although she wasn’t even sure whether she is one of the Alpha-Species…

June threw herself into Lorryn’s bosom, and wound her arms around his torso as tightly as she could; she couldn’t hold back anymore and suddenly burst into tears… Because she knew that if she was to be one of the Alpha-Species, then it means that those other ones must have been trying to awaken her slumbering inner psyche of an Alpha-Species, and that she would have to part with Lorryn someday – someday very soon…

“…I think… that I’m one of them…!”

June’s words looped inside Lorryn’s head, and struck him deeply… No, no way, it can’t be, he thought, she can’t be that Lilith Chris was talking about… the second of the Alpha-Species…! But, if she really is Lilith, then it means… it means…
