May, a beautiful teen with wispy brown hair and dark brown eyes sat on the beach of Cherrygrove City. The warm sand melted through her fingers ash she picked it up. The sun had begun to set on her pleasant day. May had just won her fifth ribbon, and final one, giving her entry into the Johto region Grand Festival in Goldenrod City. May leaned back against the cooling sand. Her long blue tank sat loosely upon her chest, moving slightly as she breathed in and out. The girl lifted her head off the ground to survey her slim body. She had grown a lot in the past year with only herself to rely on; of course Drew was there too. Drew, her long time rival from Hoenn, had also competed in the Johto contests. In fact, May had just beaten him at the Cherrygrove Contest, earning herself the final ribbon she needed. May reached into the pocket of her short grey sweats, and pulled out a tiny blue and green medal. It glowed and sparkled as the light bounced off of it. Her neck began to irritate from holding her head up, so she slipped her ribbon back in her pocket and set her head down. Suddenly the hairs on her arm stood up, and at once she knew that he was there. “Admiring the ribbon?” the voice asked mockingly. She didn’t answer. The boy with the piercing green eyes walked to her side, and lay down next to her. Drew turned his head to face May. “You know, I’ve got to say you really are impressive.” He blushed a little as he said this, and the fading glow of the sun made him look even redder. May took a moment to glance at Drew who stared back at her. Like her, he had grown a lot in the past while. She could make out the rigid outline of muscles on his arms and legs, but only slightly. He cared more about his Pokemon’s physique than his own. Drew never says anything like that, she thought to herself, it’s so rare to get a compliment out of him. May quickly turned away from his stare, and looked up into the fading sky. Ever since the Kanto Grand Festival she had begun to feel strange around Drew. Every time his soft, commanding, and sometimes mocking voice spoke, her stomach would tighten, and she would feel as if a million Beautiflies were swimming there. Drew continued, though thrown off track due to the lack of May’s response. “I’m gonna win the next contest in Violet City, and then I’ll see you in the Grand Festival.” This time May turned to Drew, “I hope soÉYou know it’s the last contestÉ” There was a short pause, and then Drew continued. “IÉI wasÉumÉwondering ifÉ” May noticed his stuttering and lack of words very easily, and giggled to herself. Slowly, she slid her butt across the now cold sand, closer to Drew. “Yes?” She inched closer still. “WellÉ” he stopped, sat up, reached to his side, and retrieved a red and white pokeball. He threw it, and bursting from a flash of light, Drew’s Roserade appeared. It spun in a cute circle, and took a bow, as if it were in a contest. May also sat up, as she watched Drew stand and walk to the slow drifting tide. He took something from Roserade, who was standing there, and he just sat down there, his blue jeans turning a dark blue from the water that stained them. May took the hint and stood up reluctantly. She had been very comfortable where she was, but even so, went over to Drew and plopped herself down next to him with a little splash. Water speckled onto Drew’s face, and he squinted at the water hitting his eye and rolling down his cheek. May giggled, slowly reached up, and gently wiped the water from his face. He was warm, and her arm tingled as she made contact with him. “May,” he said, blushing once more, though it was less visible this time, “I want to know if you’ll come travel with me and train with me for my next contest?” He held out a beautiful red rose to her as he said this. The rose was like Drew’s trademark, and May knew instantly that his question was more than what had come out of his lips. Drew had never traveled with anyone but his Pokemon, and the gesture he made put an end to her perfect day. She took the rose from Drew, and twirled it in her hand, thinking. She turned her body and lay her head on his knee. Her thin legs stretched out and she lay one of her hands on his pale white one, which lay on the ground. He twitched slightly, but he relaxed very soon after. “I dunno,” she said, “cause then I’d be stuck with someone to look after all the time.” She glanced up at Drew as she said this, and he smiled back. “Of course I’ll go with you, “ she said after waiting a moment. There was a small awkward silence, but Drew quickly broke it by changing the subject. “So, where umÉare you stayingÉI mean tonight?” “At the Pokemon centre.” “Well you know, someone who recognized me as a coordinator gave me a free room at the Lodge by the contest hall. If you wanted to get a better night sleep, without all those other noisy coordinators, you can come stay with me.” He looked down at May and then hastily added, “there’s two beds!” May smiled and sat up. “That would be nice. I’ll just go get my Pokemon that were in the contest from the Pokemon center along with my bag.” “I’ll come.” Drew hastily stood up and returned his Roserade to its pokeball. The two began to walk up the tiny hill that led away from the beach. This is so romantic, May thought to herself, as they made their way to the Pokemon center. When they arrived May hurried into the center and was out the next minute with her bag and Pokemon. Drew could hear May’s noisy and girlish voice tell Nurse Joy that she wasn’t going to be staying the night, just before she came outside. As they walked to the lodge Drew was staying at, May took a deep yawn. Her eyes fluttered a little and closed. Without realising it, she leaned her head on Drew’s shoulder, her feet still moving her forward though. Drew made a jerky movement once again, and May instantly pulled her head upright. “Sorry,” she said, “really tired.” She gave another big yawn as she said this, and Drew chuckled. Finally they arrived at the lodge, and Drew led May up the stairs to his room. He opened the door with the room key, and set it down on a table. May stumbled over to one of the beds and just fell on it, asleep within the second. “Wait-”Drew started, “that’s my bed,” he finished softly as he saw how deeply May had already begun to sleep. Drew walked over to May, and stood over her, watching for a moment. He then snapped back to reality. “I have to move her to the other bed,” he said to himself. He bent down low, slipped his arms under May’s back and tried to lift, but he wasn’t strong enough to carry a whole person. He tried again, and put all his muscle into it. Slowly, the sleeping May lifted off the bed, and Drew carefully moved her to the other one. “Oww!” he shouted as he stubbed his toe on the baseboard of the second bed, but he held onto May tightly. He slowly set her down, and her head sank deep into the soft, white pillow. He pulled the covers over the sleeping girl, and then quietly crept under the covers of his own bed. Who knows how long Drew sat there, leaning on one arm, staring at the beauty, marvelling at how peacefully she slept. But sure enough, he eventually fell asleepÉright before May started snoringÉloudly. END CHAPTER ONE I hope you liked it. Please tell me what you thought if you have a moment.
