Chapter 1: The New Girl

The sun rose over the rural town on Pallet, situated on the southeast peninsula of the Kanto region. Flocks of bird Pokémon were fluttering around the town, cooing, squawking, and calling to each other. In the vast plains surrounding Pallet, many wild Pokémon are waking and going about their daily business. To the east of Pallet the ocean was crashing against the cliffs, swelling, then subsiding again. On the south coast, the golden beaches had waves rolling onto it before falling back in line.

Along a quiet dirt track on the outskirts of the town, a quaint house sat besides vast grassland, stretching far before ending at woodland. The immaculately kept gardens surrounded by a white picket fence framed the house well, keeping in touch with the quaint feel.

In one of the bedrooms, a fifteen-year-old boy sleeps soundly in his bed. He has spiky, raven colored hair and chocolate colored eyes. He lives with his mother, Delia Ketchum, and his mother’s Mr. Mime known as Mimie. His father died when he was little so he and his mother had been through a hard time. He has no other siblings; other than that, he’s pretty much a normal teenager. Curled up beside him was a Pikachu. The boy was dreaming of being the best midfielder, dreaming of being the best, and playing alongside the best players. The reason why he was dreaming of being the best footballer? In his mind, he was already on the way of succeeding. He was the best midfielder he knew, easily the best in the school.

The walls of the room were smothered in posters of the boy’s favourite soccer players, images of Viridian Superstars- his favourite team, and his favourite player Andy Harrison were in abundance. On his bookshelf, there were piles of soccer match programmes, a variety of Pokémon books and Pokémon products, such as Potions and Pokéblocks.

Speaking of which, he was totally oblivious to the time that was on his alarm clock. It had gone off 10 minutes ago, but he turned it off. Soon enough, it went off again waking the slumbering Pikachu. It yawned and stretched like a dog would and crawled up to the alarm checking the time. Its eyes bulged out as it read seven fifteen in the morning! He crawled to the head of the bed where we can clearly see a tanned skinned, raven-haired boy sleeping, soundly, still.

The little pokémon shook the head slightly with its tiny paws. “Pikapi! Pikachu, pika pika!” (Ash! Wake up; you’re going to be late!)

The boy simply groaned and turned to the side trying to stay in bed. Pikachu sighed and grabbed the blanket with its mouth and pulled the covers off the boy making him curl up. The boy did not wake though and the Pikachu did not like it. At all.

“Pikachu kachu pika.”(Oh well, guess I’ll do it) Pikachu said with a sigh while jumping back on the bed.

Its cheeks began to spark up. “PiiikaaaaCHUUUU!!!!” It yelled as it send a bolt of electricity throughout the body of the young boy causing him to wake up and spaz. After Pikachu stopped, the boy fell out of the bed and landed on the floor groaning.

“Ow! Why did you have to wake me Pikachu?” He groaned getting up.

“Pika! Pikachu pika kachu!” (Look! You’re going to be late for school!) Pikachu exclaimed waving its arms like crazy.

“What? It’s not even…” The boy said looking at his clock but his eyes bugged out the way Pikachu’s did. “OH MY GOD!!! I’M GOING TO BE LATE!!!”

With that, the boy immediately got off the floor and ran straight to the bathroom taking a quick shower, brushing his teeth, gelling his hair, etc.  He then ran back to his room, opened his closet (which had laundry cluttered in it), pulled out his school uniform consisting of a royal blue blazer with the school shield stitched on the top pocket; pale blue shirt with collar; royal blue tie with turquoise pinstripes; black trousers, and put it on as fast- and as scruffily as he could before running downstairs.

Downstairs in the kitchen, the boy’s mother was cooking breakfast while her Mr. Mime was sweeping the floor. The woman had a kind smile on her face while she cooked breakfast for her one and only son, who was now coming into the kitchen in a panic. She looked at her son with a smile that never seemed to fade.

“Hello honey, did you sleep well?” The boy’s mother asked while her son grabbed a piece of toast.

“Yeah, until Pikachu woke me up! Now I’m going to be late!” He replied taking a bite out of the toast.

“Well then, you’d better hurry up Ash.” She said to him straightening his tie.

“Aw Mom… you’ve ruined it now…” Ash moaned as he shoved his feet into his off-white trainers.

“Well, all I want is for my boy to dress as smart as he is… now where are your shoes?”

“They’re in my bag” Ash lied.

“Well make sure you wear them. I don’t want you getting another detention for not wearing your uniform…”

“Okay Mom, later!” Ash called as he ran out of the door, toast in his hand.

“That son of mine; his father used to run late for school too.” She said to herself, placing her hands on her hips.

Ash ran along the road to Pallet High School, and blasted in the doors and rushing to his locker. To Ash, school was the most boring place on Earth, apart from when soccer practice was on.

The bell had already rung and the school was now in the auditorium where the school usually holds assemblies every Tuesday and Thursday. After putting his backpack into his locker, he rushed down to the auditorium. As he bounded through the double doors, everyone spun around and glared at him.

“Great, caught again” Ash said to himself, wincing when Mr. Boulby the Principal boomed

“You’re late Mr. Ketchum, again.” The whole student body laughed.

“Sorry sir, slept in.” Ash said with a bead of sweat behind his head.

“Well, I’ll expect you in detention after school tomorrow then.” The Principal replied simply, causing the students to laugh again.

“Yes Sir,” Ash said, his face reddening by the second. He had dealt with this before so it was nothing new but he still got embarrassed each time. He went to find a seat and he managed to spot his friends who were motioning him to sit by them. He did so, without hesitation. He sighed as he sat next to his friend Gary Oak, his neighbor and best friend in the world. Gary, a 15-year-old boy has long light brown hair worn spiked up, brown eyes, and has a toned, slightly tanned appearance. He is around 5’7” tall, and wore the school uniform in pretty much the same fashion as Ash- as scruffy as possible. He wore red sneakers on his feet instead of back shoes, but everyone did that.

“Didn’t wanna wake up again?” Gary asked with a sly grin.

“Yeah… Pikachu made sure I did though” Ash replied in a groan, rubbing his head.

“Aww chill out Ash; it’s not that bad.” Another friend of his, Ritchie said leaning forward since he was on the opposite side of Gary.

“Easy for you to say. Pikachu doesn’t shock you nearly every morning ” Ash muttered.

Gary shook his head at his friend before an annoying voice interrupted their thoughts. “Hey, Ketchum got busted!”

‘Rudy…’ Ash thought, inwardly flinching.

They simultaneously turned to where the sneer came from, to see none other than Rudy and his gang. Rudy, originally from Trovita Island has now made his residence in Pallet Town, and had quite a name for him among the students. He was tall at 6’2”, had cropped chestnut hair and matching eyes. He had an athletic physique, which was not surprising considering he was part of the athletics, soccer and basketball squads, and a regular player. Due to being in so many teams, he was considered part of the ‘in’ crowd, as he was friendly with all of the popular ones. Due to his build, popularity and general good looks, he was one of the sought after boys of the whole school by all the girls, and constantly getting his own way with girls.

Ever since Ash and Rudy set eyes on each other in their first year, Rudy had been a jerk. To make matters worse, when they both signed up for the soccer team in the same position, and then for Ash to get the Captain’s armband… they had full on hate pumping through their veins. None of Ash’s friends could stand Rudy either, as he was such a jerk to them too, constantly putting them down.

“Hey shut your mouth Rudy, you’re one to talk!” Another friend of Ash, Brock growled back. Brock, from slightly distant Pewter City, was the son of Flint, the current Pokémon Gym Leader in Pewter. Seeing as the family got a constant flow of cash through the Gym, Flint had enough money to send Brock off to the better of the four local schools. A medium height, tanned appearance was Brock, and his short hair was constantly gelled up in spikes.

“Ooh, I’m shaking in my boots…not!” Rudy said sarcastically making his gang all laugh.

“Pay no attention to him guys, he’s just an asshole.” Gary said while looking at the principal.

“Calm down, students calm down.” The Principal announced. The students continued with their conversations, totally oblivious to Principal Boulby’s plea.

“Students, SHUT UP!!!” He shouted. Immediately, he had stony silence.

“Now, I have an announcement to make…”

“You’re getting fired!?” A random student yelled causing everyone to laugh.

“Alex, I’ll see you in my office after this. No, I’m pleased to announce that a new student will be joining our school today, so I expect everyone to treat her with the same respect as you give one another.” The principal announced

“Yeah right!” Another random voice snorted. Again, the whole auditorium roared with laughter.

A girl wearing the girl’s school uniform, which consisted of a navy blue blazer with the school shield on, a pale blue blouse with a navy blue sailor’s neckerchief with two turquoise stripes tied in a bow instead of a tie, a navy blue pleated mini skirt, white ankle socks and black shoes walked onto the stage. She was around the 5’7” mark, with flame red shoulder length hair tied into a ponytail. She had ocean coloured blue eyes, and slightly tanned skin. Right away guys- including Rudy started gawking at her thinking how beautiful she is. She looked on nervously at the sea of anonymous faces all staring at her.

“This is Misty Waterflower. Now I expect everyone to treat her well.”

Ash was walking through the hallways getting to his locker before going to his first class, which was mathematics, to grab his books. Ash did not like mathematics at all; to him it was the hardest class other than science. Even though he had a good grade in it, due to some of his mother’s help, he did not like it. He was lucky because Brock was in that class too, so he had a friend to talk to, but Brock would flirt with May, Gary’s sister at the first chance he got mainly because he goes out with her.

After Ash got his books, he noticed that it wasn’t long before the bell rung. He quickly closed his locker and began to storm towards the classroom not seeing where he was going; as a result, he crashed into someone knocking both of them down. Both of them had their books so nothing fell, except them. Ash rubbed his arm and looked at whom he bumped into; it was the new girl, Misty.

He got up and went to help her up, she accepted his hand reluctantly and he pulled her up while she brushed some dust off of her uniform.

“Sorry about that…I guess I should’ve been more careful.” Ash said apologetically looking at her.

“Humph…well next time watch where you’re going.” Misty replied very rudely while sneering at Ash.

“I said sorry, no need to get cranky.” Ash said defensively while holding his hands up in front of him.

“Who said I was getting cranky Mr. Lazy Ass?” Misty responded with a glare.

That struck a nerve for Ash. “Then maybe I shouldn’t have said sorry ya scrawny girl.”

“Scrawny!?” Now Misty was steamed as they looked at each other with anime sparks flying from their eyes at one another.

“Ahem!” An adult voice interrupted the argument.

The two of them looked to see Principal Boulby with his arms crossed while looking at them with a sneer. “Is there a problem here?”

“N-no sir!” They replied at the same time while secretly glaring at each other.

“Good, then you both better get to class now.” He said with a strict voice before walking in between them and down the hall.

Ash and Misty looked at each other again before turning their backs at one another with a ‘humph’. Then they both went their separate ways; Misty went to her locker, while Ash went to mathematics taught by Mr. Klauza. He was a great teacher to Ash, even though Ash flunks math from time to time. After arriving in the classroom, he sat down in his seat behind Brock, who was already flirting with May.

“Jeez you two, get a room.” Ash said with his eyes narrowed.

The two looked at Ash and blushed turning completely red. Brock had his hand behind his neck while May simply smiled with the blush. The two had been going out for a couple years since Brock came to the school. Brock had been known to always flirt with the first pretty girl he sees. This would get May jealous, but she always keeps him on his toes. Ash picked up his textbook, looked at the cover and slammed it back down on the table.

“What’s with you Ash?” May asked while noticing his grumpy mood.

“Don’t ask.” Ash said flatly.

“Okay, I will then. What’s up?” Brock joined in.

“Misty.” Ash spat.

“Oh, that new girl? What happened?” May piped up.

“I walked into her and she completely flipped!” Just as Ash said this, Misty walked through the door. As Ash’s seat is situated behind the door, Misty heard every single word.

“Oh, so I just outright flipped did I? Tell them the whole story next time…” Misty said, eyes narrowed.

‘As if my day wasn’t bad enough she’s in my math class too now!’ Ash thought bitterly as she walked past him, looking for an empty place. Just after Misty sat down behind Brock, Mr. Klauza came walking through the door, textbooks in hand.

~*~*~*~

It was lunchtime at school. Ash, Brock, Gary, Ritchie, and Ash’s friend from soccer training- Mathew were all in the canteen getting their lunch. Mathew was 14, but in the same year as Ash. He was small at 5’3”, and all his friends towered over him by at least 2 inches. He had short dark brown hair, brown eyes, and was skinny but had a few muscles. Mathew was part of the school soccer team, and played alongside Rudy and Ash in midfield.

All but Mathew, May and Ash were sat down, Gary and Ritchie doing their Pokémon Physiology homework that was due in the next lesson. Ash and Mathew were just paying for their lunch, and May was behind them.

“So, what exactly happened between you and Misty this morning hey Ash?” Mathew asked while handing over the money to the dinner lady.

“You know what happened, I was walking to Math, I walked into her, knocked us both over, she flips!” Ash sighed in exasperation. May leaned over to Ash.

“You know, you shouldn’t talk so loud, she’s right over there.” May said, nodding her head in the direction of the canteen entrance, just a few metres away from where they were stood. Funnily enough, Misty was there, and as soon as Ash looked in her direction she developed a deep scowl.

“Jeez, all I did was look, what is it now? Illegal to look at someone?” Ash sighed.

“Ash, I think you’re making too much of a little thing here. She looks lonely, and pretty scared too if you ask me. How would you like it if you were to be treated like that on your first day here huh?” May reasoned, picking up a bottle of water and placing it on her tray, before moving forward and paying for her lunch.

“Yeah, well… she wasn’t particularly nice to me either you know…”

“That’s not the point Ash. Anyway, tell Brock I’ll meet him on the stands after school, I’m off over to talk to Misty…” May said, paying for her dinner then leaving a dumbfounded Ash staring at May.

“Ash, come on, I need to go do my Physiology homework too you know…” Mathew said. Ash just nodded before following Mathew to the table the rest were sat at.

“Brock, May said she’ll meet you on the stands after school tonight.” Ash said, taking a mouthful of his cheeseburger.

“How come she isn’t here now?” Brock asked, looking up.

“She went to talk to Misty… she said she looked lonely” Ash scowled.

“I thought she looked a little lonely… oh well, I won’t be seeing May until 3 this afternoon then…” Brock drifted off, and watched Gary and Ritchie rushing through their homework.

“Ash, you got soccer practice tonight haven’t you?” Gary asked, looking up from his homework.

“Yeah, why?”

“Do you want to come over to mine tonight to do our Math assignment? I’ve got a detention in Geography tonight”

“Yeah, I’ll come over with you… how come you got another detention?”

“My homework wasn’t good enough, and when Mrs. Leyburn shouted at me, I told her where to stuff it.” This remark gained a snort from Brock.

“God she’s a bitch isn’t she? She always gives out detentions…” Brock remarked.

“Yeah, is it any surprise she does when you say things like that to her?” Ritchie said, carrying on with his homework.

“Here, Ash, what’s a use for Staryu and Starmie’s jewels in the centre of them other than emitting beam attacks?” Gary asked after a few moments silence. Ash pondered on the thought for a second before answering.

“In a battle when their HP is too low to continue, it flashes. When they faint, the jewel goes dull. So you can use it to predict their remaining HP. And can I just ask; why are you doing the Physio homework? We have practical this afternoon, and we never hand in homework to Oak then do we?” Ash was right- that afternoon they did have a practical Physiology with Professor Oak- the local Pokémon Professor.

~*~*~*~

Ash walked to his locker to pick up his backpack, put his Biology textbook in, before slinging it over his shoulder and shutting the locker. He turned around to see May and Misty walking along the corridor towards the sports field. May noticed Ash.

“Ash, I’ll see you in 10 minutes, we’re stopping behind to watch you and Mathew train- it’s better than homework…”

“Yeah… Brock’s down on the field already- cheerleader practice is on. You know what that means!” Ash laughed

“Hmm… better get down there to keep his eyes off them. See ya later Ash!” May called as she walked off with Misty.

Ash continued walking down the corridor, thinking about what homework he has to do tonight, and Rudy.

‘I hope he leaves off me tonight…I’m getting seriously fed up of him…’ Ash scowled at this thought. He went through the double doors leading to the rear of the school- the vast playing fields, the soccer pitch and athletics track were to the right, and had a stand for crowds to watch the athletics or sports. The changing rooms were situated under the stand, and Ash made his way over to them. As he got closer, he noticed May making her way up the stand, and Misty… was going in the changing rooms?

‘Why’s she going in there?’ Ash thought to himself. He carried on walking, and just dismissed the fact Misty was going to the changing rooms as the fact she was probably going for the cheerleader squad.

‘Heh, that’d be a sight, seeing her in the cheerleader outfit…’ Ash imagined Misty in the cheerleader outfit, which was a navy blue skintight sleeveless top with white and turquoise ‘V’ stripes following the V-neck cut top, and the pleated navy blue miniskirt following the same colour scheme, and the turquoise pom poms, singing and dancing to chants with the other girls. He chuckled at the thought as he walked into the changing rooms. While Ash, and the rest of the team were getting changed for training, the coach came in to talk to them about the plans.

“Now then, today, we have someone trying for the team, so they’re going to have trials. And judging by your performance last week you all need much more fitness training, so we’re doing some of that before having a match. Okay? Let’s go!” The coach shouted to all the players. The ones who were ready picked up their drinks and football boots and went outside, the ones who weren’t ready- Ash and Rudy, were left inside getting changed. Ash had just pulled up his shorts when Rudy came walking over, pulling his shirt over his head.

“Here, Ashy! Heard about your running into with Misty this morning… way to go boy…” Rudy sneered.

“Shut up Rudy” Ash growled

“Oh, and our match last week… didn’t you play crap!? If I was captain, I would get rid of you and Mathew straight away… and I should have played last week, if I had, Jordan would have got that through ball you cocked up, and we could have won!”

“Rudy, making you captain won’t change anything, nor will whining about past results- it’s obvious who’s the better player if you’re stuck on the bench and not captain…” Ash sneered. Rudy looked at Ash for a second, before sighing. He leant over to pull up his socks over his shin pads.

“Fine, you win… you are the captain after all…” Rudy said in mock exasperation. He stood up, and walked towards the exit, leaving Ash staring, dumbfounded.

“He never backs down that easily…” Ash whispered to himself, picking up his boots and jogging out of the changing rooms.

“DAMN RIGHT I don’t!!!” Rudy shouted as soon as Ash came out of the door, and lunged his fist into Ash’s stomach. Ash groaned before hitting the floor with a thud.

“You should know me better than that Ketchum…” Rudy sneered as he towered over Ash, gasping for breath, before kicking Ash in the side. Ash doubled over in pain before Rudy walked away with a smirk on his face. Unbeknownst to him, the whole of the football squad, including the coach were stood a few yards away, and had seen everything. Mathew came running over to Ash.

“Ash, you alright?” He asked, worried. Ash sat up, winced, and sighed.

“Yeah, fine…” He said quietly before getting up and walked past Rudy and Mathew. Just then, the Coach came over.

“Williams (A/N the surname is made up merely for the fic… don’t go around thinking it’s the truth okay?), what in Hell do you think you’re doing!? You don’t just go and beat up a player, never mind one of ours, and to top it off our captain!? Get in there, get changed and go home. Don’t come back until next week!!!” The coach shouted. Alongside the rest of the team, Misty was stood in full football kit, watching the events unfold. She looked to one of the players next to her.

“Excuse me, who’s the captain?” She asked.

“The captain? It’s Ash Ketchum. Why?” The player replied. Misty smirked.

“Doesn’t matter…” Misty said under her breath.

‘Great, that’s revenge for earlier… he probably deserved everything he got!’ Misty thought.

“Okay everyone, Rudy’s going home, so everybody else, come on, 3 laps around the pitch then stretch. Misty, wait behind a minute, I want to talk to you.” The coach shouted to the players. Ash jogged slowly past the coach and joined the rest of the team in jogging around the pitch. The coach walked over to Misty.

“So then, do you think you can get in with my team huh? We haven’t had a girl before…” The coach said to Misty. She just looked at him.

“Sir, at Cerulean High we had a girl’s team… I was captain.” She replied.

“Hmm… yes, I heard a lot about that team… was it you who won the Kanto Girls’ Cup?”

“Yes Sir, 3 times.” Misty said proudly.

“Hmm… okay then. Do you think you can cut it with these lads? We don’t have a girls’ team here, they’re all for hockey unfortunately.” The coach remarked.

“I don’t know how they play, but I’m pretty sure I’ll graft into the team easily.” Misty smiled.

“Okay then. Go do a lap round the pitch with the boys, and complete warm up with them. We’ll give you trials when you’re done.”

“Yes Sir” Misty finished, before running to the pitch to do the lap and warm up.

“What’s she doing now!?” Ash remarked, as he stopped running, and began to lead the stretching, and noticed Misty running around the pitch.

“Anybody’s guess.” Jordan said, watching Misty. After she ran the pitch, she did a few quick stretches before running back to the coach, where the boys were now stood.

“Sir, what’s that new girl running around and warming up for?” Jordan asked the Coach.

“Well, I’m going to talk to you about this now. We have never had this before, but a girl, namely Misty, is wanting to join the team-”

“No way!!! The rules won’t let her!!!” Ash shouted, enraged.

“Can I finish Ash? Anyway, even if the rules won’t let her in the team, she’s having trials. You know our girls are too busy with hockey than football, so she can’t play with the girls. Anyway, we’re going to give her trials before we have a match today, so when you’re ready, you can all get into pairs and we’ll practice passing and tackling.” As the Coach said this, the team got into pairs, picked up a football and began passing the ball between each other. Misty went with Jordan, the striker.

“So, what made you want to play football with us then… uh… Misty is it?” Jordan asked, while passing the ball between Misty and him.

“I played at Cerulean High in the girls’ team, and I was captain there. I have always loved football and can’t stop playing now…” Misty said, smiling.

“Ah yeah, their girls’ team is good.” Jordan remarked. Misty smiled.

“Okay everyone, let’s start tackling. What I want you to do is dribble the ball, then the tackler run in and cleanly tackle your opponent.” The coach called. Everybody did as they were told, and soon enough, people were lunging at each other in a fight for the ball. The coach was watching Misty and Jordan, just as Misty tackled Jordan, got up quickly and dribbled the ball.

“Hmm… impressive. Especially for a girl…” The coach said to himself. Ash overheard that, and scowled. Misty began dribbling the ball, and when Jordan went in to tackle her, she feinted running one way, then ran the other, making Jordan totally miss Misty and the ball in his tackle. Ash saw this, and went up to Jordan.

“Jordan, swap partners, she won’t be able to tackle me.” Ash smirked. Jordan happily changed partners. Misty scowled at Ash.

“What position do you play?” Ash interrogated.

“Right midfield, why?”

“Grrr… I play there too. Only decent players play in right midfield.” Ash said airily

“You think you’re so good don’t you Ash?” Misty sneered as he walked up to her.

“Well yes, I do, and that’s why I’m the captain of this team, that you’re not going to get in!” Ash said egotistically. Misty frowned.

“Well, are we going to practice or not then!?”

“Okay, okay… I’ll tackle you first…” As Ash said this, he lunged for Misty with both feet, totally missing the ball, making Misty fly into the air, and crashing to the ground. When this happened, everybody else stopped to watch the two. Misty sighed, picking herself up.

“Heh, didn’t see that one coming did you Red?” Ash sneered. The rest of the boys laughed. Misty stayed cool.

“I didn’t see the blatantly cheating tackle come, no. I play along with the rules Ashy, not against them.” Misty said, calm and collected.

“Go on then Red, crop me.” Ash began running with the ball at his feet. Misty got up, and ran at Ash. She tackled him with perfect timing, cropping Ash and intercepting the ball before getting up. Ash just flew into the air and landed on the floor, getting a face full of mud. Misty just stood there triumphantly, with the rest of the team laughing at Ash. He picked himself up, and wiped his beetroot face to remove all mud.

“That wasn’t a fair tackle. Wasn’t fair at all.” Ash moaned.

“Oh, and yours was fair!? Gimme a break Ashy.”

“DON’T call me that, Red!” Ash said heatedly.

“Okay, okay, you two calm down. Misty, if I could field you in the team, I would. But it’s the rules that it’s boys only, I’m extremely sorry.” The coach announced. Ash breathed a sigh of relief.

“However… you are an extremely talented player Misty, and I am sure that all these can learn a few tricks off you. So, I am offering for you to train with us, and you can help me train them too.” The coach finished. Ash’s face dropped.

“I would be honoured Sir. Thank you.” Misty grinned at the Coach, then smirked at Ash.

“No way… No way am I having my team coached by a girl…”

“Deal with it Ketchum!” The coach retorted back.

‘Oh great…now she’s on the team! Can this get any worse!?’ Ash thought grimly.
