Poke’mon X

(Answering the mysterious call from Gym Leader Watson, our heroes make their way through Rusturf Tunnel to get to Mauville City by means of another “brilliant” shortcut. What dangers and hardships will Landon and his friends face? And what’s with the strange call?) “Hmmm…” Landon let his eyes wander from side to side around the cave. In his hand was his poke’gear with the map covering the screen. The trio of kids walked through the turquoise caves quickly. A fresh cool breeze blew through the cracks of the cave’s rooftop. Sometimes, the trail the kids passed would run by a small pond of water. Rocks that shone like jewels littered the very ground upon which they walked. Toya and Phanpy walked alongside their trainers on the ground, chatting quietly. “Now…” Landon’s eyes bounced around a few different trails inside the tunnel “Let’s see; according to the map, the correct path is this way.” He said lowly to himself. “Landon, don’t tell me we’re lost again! I told you taking this shortcut was a bad idea.” May told him. Landon just sweated anime style as he continued to walk silently. “I knew it; we’re lost again! You should’ve listened to me, Lan; now we’re going to end up wandering around in this dark, dank cave forever. No one will find us! We’ll have to turn into hermits…” And as she went on, parts of the cave seemed to echo with moving sounds. Landon looked back to Toya and they shook their heads. If May continued to carry on like that, she would wake up every sleeping Poke’mon in the cave. “May, I know where we’re going, but right now, could you be a little quieter?” Landon asked her in a low voice. “Be quieter? But why?” Zeru said as loud as May. “Keep it down!” Landon hissed. “Tell me why I have to be quiet—” Suddenly, there was a rumbling sound from the side that caused the kids to turn to the side. Toya and Phanpy stopped their chit-chatting and did the same.

A few small boulders along the cave wall started to rumble slightly, then burst off to the side. In the shadows of a small den that the boulders yielded was a pair of glowing blue eyes. Landon felt a foreboding presence and took a step back. All of his friends did the same to stay behind him. The Poke’mon slowly stepped out of the shadows, revealing its small figure. Its body was made of shining silver steal, except for its black belly. Its eyes were blue and narrowed at the kids while it kicked up dirt with its very small legs. “Hey, it’s an Aron!” Landon exclaimed lowly. Zeru pulled his Poke’dex from his backpack and flipped it open. “Aron, the Iron Armor Poke’mon. Aron likes to build up its body  by consuming tons of metal. No mater what its size, this Poke’mon can topple over an entire dump truck in one tackle.” It spoke. “Aronnn!” Aron growled at them dangerously. Zeru and May held up their hands and started to back-step slowly. “Let’s jus get outta’ here slowly—” “Poke’ball, go!” Without warning, Landon tossed a poke’ball at Aron; it bounced off of the Poke’mon’s body and sucked it up in a red light. Landon watched the poke’ball wobble from side to side. He held his breath in response, hoping that his less than thorough catch would pull through. The Poke’mon inside fought hard to break free; it did so by making the poke’ball bounce and roll vigorously. There was one final shake and the button in the middle flashed red. “Whew! That was a close one.” Landon walked over and picked up the poke’ball. It stuck around in his palm for a while before disappearing in random bars of silver light. “Take good care of Aron for me, Professor Birch.” He said to himself. Suddenly, more boulders were pushed to the side from the cave wall. Leering blue eyes gleamed from the shadowy holes dangerously. “Aron!” “Aronnn!” “Arrrr!” “Aron!” One by one, angry and aggressive-looking Aron jumped out onto the ground from their homes. Another from their sleep, they  growled and hissed at the intruders. Landon, May, Zeru, Phanpy, and Toya took a nervous step backwards, sweating anime style. “Arrronnn!” With a roar, the wild Aron started to charge. “Runnnnn!” Landon shouted and the group turned-tail to run for their lives. “See, you two, that’s why we needed to keep it down!” He exclaimed, not daring to stop running. “Well how were we supposed to know we’d wake up a bunch of cranky Poke’mon?” May questioned. Landon’s body rumbled from his running on the rough ground. His eyes darted around for some way to ditch the Aron. “Aroonnn!” The Poke’mon roared behind, them, sending chills up their spines. “There!” Landon pointed to a small dark hole in the up-coming wall. He and Toya were the first to jump in, followed by May, Phanpy, and Zeru. The ground rumbled as the Aron dashed by them, not bothering to slow their rampage. Toya crawled up to Landon’s shoulder and May held the Poke’mon egg close to her. There was nothing they could do now, but let the train of Aron pass them by. Landon let out a sigh, “Okay, we’ll just let them pass by and continue on.”

“Maybe next time, you two will be quiet when I say it.” Landon scolded his friends as they walked on, his temple beating anime style. May and Zeru sported sad looks and kept quiet for the rest of the trip. The group turned around a corner along the trail to see a burst of sunlight coming through the mouth of the exit. “See, guys, we’re almost out now.” Landon lead the in a sprint up to the end of the trail. All of them couldn’t wait to be back outside again—especially May. The friends burst out into the daylight and onto a green hill. Down below, they could see Mauville City next to the lake. “Yeah….” Landon smiled as a light breeze blew against his hair. “Let’s hurry and see what Watson wants from us.” Zeru said and everyone nodded.

Episode 28: “Generations!”

Landon and Toya chewed on a hamburger as they walked across the sidewalk. May, Zeru, and Phanpy had an ice cream cone instead of a burger to satisfy their stomach. The group figured that Watson would be at his gym, so they headed in that direction. Mauveille City remained as busy as ever. Since the bike shop was near, most of the people rode bicycles instead of driving cars. “Speaking of gym leaders, I’ve wandering something.” May started. “Huh?” Landon looked to her. “Why would someone as strong as Watson need help from a group of kids? You’d think he could fix it better than any of us, wouldn’t you?” “A gym leader isn’t unbeatable—Landon has already proven that.” Zeru said and Landon blushed minutely. Off to the side, a familiar chubby man came stepping out of the general store with a disappointed look on his face. Floating beside him was a Magnamite, which was sporting the same expression. “I can’t believe this is happening. Can you, Magnamite?” “Magnaa…” The Poke’mon told its trainer. They both let out a sigh and started down the sidewalk. When the man glanced to the side, his eye caught Landon May, and Zeru. “Hey, Landon! Over here!” He called. The group turned around and smiled. “Hello there, Watson!” Landon waved. He ran across the street onto the other sidewalk with his friends behind him. “How are you kids doing? It’s been a while.” Watson smiled, petting Toya on the head. “Mudkip!” Toya’s tail wagged happily. “It hasn’t’ been that long, and we’re doing fine.” Landon told him. “Magnamite!” Magnamite floated around Landon, smiling. “Hey, Magnamite,” He said to it. “Watson, what was the e-mail you went us for?” Zeru asked the gym leader. “Oh, yeah,” Watson’s cheery expression faded, “I need to ask a favor of you three.” “What is it?” He motioned for them to follow him and started down the sidewalk. The three kids and Poke’mon looked to each other, shrugged their shoulders, and started to walk on behind him. “For the past few years, the Mauville City council has been constructing a secret tourist attraction called new Mauville. They figured that if they could find a way to increase tourists, our city would have even more outstanding ratings. New Mauville is a…..well, ‘tourist trap’ so to speak; an underground city full of hotels, food courts, pools, and other tourist attractions.” Watson started to full at his beard as Magnamite hovered by his side, “As the construction increased, however, more power was needed to support the city council decided to use electric Poke’mon to power up the large generator that is wired to all of New Mauville’s electric system. Everything was going fine, until some of the Poke’mon accidentally over-powered the massive generator; the high voltage was enough to confuse the Poke’mon and caused them to unintentionally attack the workers. No one has been able to get close to the city ever since.” “Wow…” “Those poor Poke’mon.” “Phanpy-phan,” Zeru, May, and Phanpy stated. Landon was drawn into the story, interested in every last detail. “It gets worse,” Watson continued, “Not only is the confusion crisis a problem, but the generator has way too much power now. If it continues to go untreated, it could explode.” He stopped and turned to the kids, holding up his index finger, “If that were to happen, the impact from New Mauville will also set Muaville City ablaze.” “No!” Landon clenched his fists and teeth. If the city were to blow up, innocent people and Poke’mon would die. Now, he wanted to help even more just to save the lives at stake. “Not even my electric types were a match for the boost of power the other Poke’mon got from the generator. That’s why I needed you three; I was searching for a team that could withstand and attacks of the Poke’mon down in New Mauville. I knew I could count on you three because of the bond you have with your Poke’mon, and also, so none of this is leaked to the press—the last thing we want are pandemonium and rumors.” “You can count on us, Watson. Right, guys?” May turned to her friends and they nodded. “Thank you; you don’t know how much this’ll mean to all of us.” Watson reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver key marked with a gold letter “M”. “This is the key to get past the gate. New Mauville is located right in the middle of the lake—a boat will be waiting for you.” “Watson, exactly how much time do we have before the generator goes sky high?” Zeru asked him. “I’d say….about an hour, so you’d better hurry.” “You can count on us.” He pulled out his poke’gear and selected the icon. With a few clicks, the yellow timer flashed on the screen with exactly one hour. Landon led the way, sweating a bit from their lack of time. If he even had the slightest clue about New Mauville, he wouldn’t have been so nervous. But then, hadn’t he and Syorin stopped a bomb a white back—and that was much more complicated than turning off a generator.

Landon left Muaville behind and dashed across the field of grass next to the lake. He and Toya looked out to the vast lake in search of some deserted island cave in the middle. If they looked out far enough, they could see the cycling road were they raced across a while ago. Toya gripped her trainer’s hair to keep herself from flying off; Phanpy did the same with Zeru. In the middle of the lake was a small rocky cave that protrude from out of the water. The steal door blocking it off let them know that they were heading in the right direction. A wooden wharf had a small motor boat tied to it vacantly. It was a wonder why some of the walking people didn’t seemed to be the least bit curious. Landon slid down the small hill and jumped into the boat. May and Zeru followed and unhooked the rope. Zeru cranked up the motor and started to drive towards the island-like cave. “About how much time do we have left, Zeru?” Landon asked, sitting with his arms folded. “Roughly forty-five minutes—all the time world, right?” Zeru grinned. “Hey, guys, I just thought about something.” May started, “If the Poke’mon in new Muaville were confused by the generator’s high voltage, what’s stopping our Poke’mon from doing the same?” “The only electric Poke’mon we have is Lan’s Raichu and it can ground any excess electricity with its tail.” Zeru said over the roar of the motor boat. The water parted behind them as they sped across the surface. Some fish Poke’mon leapt over them or parted out of their way.

The island entrance to New Mauville pulled up to them and Zeru slowed the boat down to a halt. With the boat secured to the wharf, the kids jump out and started for the steel doors. It was definitely different now that they were close up; the front was marked with a large letter “M” and the entire door was embroidered with pictures of Poke’mon. Landon reached into his pocket and pulled out the key Watson had given him. On the left side of the door was a small keyhole. “Well, if any of you want to turn back now, here’s your chance.” Landon said. “Lan, don’t do that.” May told him. Landon pushed the key into the hole and turned the key. There was a loud creek as the doors slowly pushed off to the sides. The light from outside shot into the dark rocky corridor, falling on another steel door at the far end. Landon May, and Zeru started to jog their way through and pushed through the other door. This time, the hallway had lights strung across the top that sometimes flickered. Instead of being flat ground, the floor was actually a staircase leading downwards. The smell of new construction blew through the air—they were only a skip and a hop away from New Mauville City. Their bodies rumbled their jogging down the steps. “Huh?” Landon looked up when the lights flickered completely out for a second. “That generator must be getting worse; every time these lights flicker, they seem to get brighter from the power output.” He started to sweat. The wall to their right soon disappeared to reveal a bright city concealed inside a cave. The setting overhead was dark and starry as if the day had turned into night in an instant. The lights glittered in a rainbow of colors from the restaurants to the hotels. “Wow, it’s like something out of a story book.” May stated. “I wouldn’t mind spending a few nights here.” “Phan…py…” Zeru said and Phanpy agreed. “Hey, look over there!” Landon pointed out. In the distance, a tall cylindrical turbine was surrounded by a steel gate. It made a mechanical wind sound as it turned, sparking a bit wildly. “All we have to do is get to the generator and its smooth sailing.” Zeru said. Somehow, May and Landon know that would be easier said than done. They jumped off the final step and into the streets of New Mauville.  The buildings whizzed by them as they bound through the streets. Toya’s radar fin twitched and she let her eyes wander around. She checked the alleyways for anything that might be hiding in them. Zeru pulled his poke’gear from his pocket and clicked the timer. “…thirty minutes left. We’ve taken too long in getting here.”

“Mudkip!” Toya gave a sudden jolt and went all stiff with her tail and head fin standing straight up. “What is it, Toya?” Landon and the others came to an abrupt stop. “Landon, over there!” May pointed to the alleyway farther up the street. From the shadows, glowing red eyes shot deadly looks at the kids. The Poke’mon floated out to reveal themselves as Magnamite. “It’s a whole group of Magnamite!” Landon exclaimed. “I was wondering when we’d run into some of those confused Poke’mon.” “Magnaaa!” The magnetic poles at Magnamite’s sides lit up and burst with electricity. “Dah!” Landon jumped to the side; Zeru grabbed May and leapt to the opposite side of his friend. “They’re not kidding around!” he shouted “Then we’ll have to fight them all.” Landon reached to his belt and pulled  poke’ball from it. “Go, Trapinch!” He threw it and it and it burst open in a bright white light. “Traaapinch!” Trapinch grinned. “Mudkip-mudkip,” Toya clambered down from Landon shoulder and faced the Magnamite. “Go, Treecko!” “Go, Torchic!” Zeru and May called their own Poke’mon. Phanpy did the same as Toya, ready to fight. “Magnaaa!” The group of Magnamite used their Thundershock one after the other, bursting with a rapid jolt of electricity. “Go, Trapinch; absorb the attack!” “You too, Phanpy and Treecko!” At their trainers’ voice, Phanpy, Treecko, and Trapinch dashed forward ahead of the other Poke’mon; the electric attack merely sparked at their bodies, fizzling out. “Tra!” “Phan!” “Ko!” The three grinned. “Magnaamiteee!!” The Magnamite charged at them in a flying tackle. Landon took a shocked step back—they still wanted to fight them even though their electrical attacks were useless. “We don’t have the time to mess with these Magnamite; with a little less than half an hour, time is of the essence.”  “Torchic, use Ember attack!” May shouted. “Torrchiic!” Torchic leapt into the air and spurted a blast of cinders from its beak. Smoke and singe sounds sizzled from the Magnamite, as they were weak against fire-type attacks. “Treecko, Petal Dance attack!” Zeru exclaimed and Treecko balanced itself on one foot; with a swing of its other leg, it started to spin around and around like a spinning top. From it’s tail, a wind of pink flower petals whirled through the air, pelting the Magnamite harshly. “Namiteee!” They glared as they stopped themselves from falling. Their red eyes glinted aggressively; the group of Magnamite huddled together and started to make their Magnetic poles vibrate. Without warning, a burst of wild fired with a loud boom; both the kids and the Poke’mon were hurled back, landing harshly onto the street. “What was that?”  May sat up, making sure there were no nicks or scratches on the Poke’mon egg. Landon sat up and rubbed his head, “It must’ve been Magnamite’s Sonicboom attack.” He said. “Another one of those and we’ll be sent even farther.” Zeru got to his feet. “Are you guys okay?” Landon turned to the Poke’mon and they answered him with a smile. He smiled back and stood up as well.

“Toya, use Water Gun at full blast!” “Muuuudkiiiip!” Toya blasted a jet-stream of water from her mouth and moved down the row of Magnamite. “Yeah!” Landon jumped excitedly. The Magnamite floated back up into the air slowly, some huddling close together. The kids watched as they started to connect to some of their fellows via an electrical current. There was a bright light that surrounded the Magnamite who wee connected and they started to position themselves in a triangle shape. The electrical current closed the gap between them and the bright light desperced in one final flash. “Magnaaatoon!” The three new Magnaton drown. “They…just evolve!” May exclaimed. “The battling must have been enough to give them the boost they fro evolution!” Zeru stated. The Magnaton and Magnamite inched closer towards them, poised to strike. “Magnaaaa!” “Magnaaatonnn!” The magnet Poke’mon fired sharp bolts of electricity from the magnets on their bodies angrily. “Huh!” Landon scooped up Toya and jumped back to miss the concentrated lightning that cracked the spot they were standing in. “Landon, we can’t keep fighting like this; we’re gonna’ have to run away!” May told her friend. Landon nodded and held up the poke’ball marked with a sand sticker. “Great job, Trapinch; return,” A red light shot from the middle and sucked Trapinch back into its poke’ball. “Good work,” May and Zeru did the same with their Poke’mon. Phanpy and Toya clambered onto their trainer’s shoulders for safety. “Now, let’s find a place to—whoa!” Landon had turned to run, but was forced to skid to a halt. The ball-shaped Poke’mon, Voltorb, had rolled in front of him, joined by its fellow comrades. Behind it were two more ball-shaped Poke’mon. They were quite a bit larger than Voltorb and their color red was on the bottom rather than the top. They had small black eyes and a big grin on their faces. It may have seemed a little foolish at the time, but Landon never passed up an opportunity to learn about a new Poke’mon. He pulled out his poke’dex and flipped it open. Click-ick! “Electrode, the Ball Poke’mon. This Poke’mon is very dangerous. If it has too much electricity stored up and has nothing to do, it amuses itself by exploding.” It spoke. Landon, May and Zeru backed into each other; on the side, Magnamite and Magnaton threatened to shock them, and on the other, Electrode and Voltorb threatened to blow up on them. Between the two, it wasn’t pretty on either side. “Phanpy-phanpy!” Phanpy pointed to the alleyway between the hotel and the breakfast house. “Good idea, Phanpy. C’mon, you two!” Zeru darted off towards the side and at the alley. Landon and May followed, the Poke’mon rushing right at their heels. “Voltoorrb!” SPWEEE—KABOOOOM! Landon felt the wind from one of the exploding Voltorb and nearly tripped. They passed through the shadows of the alley and turned around the corner street. Landon didn’t know how close they were to the generator. To tell the truth, he was so scared that he forgot about it for a second to try and save their lives. “Hmmm….” He glanced down at his Crystal Bell. He remembered that King Teotan had once told him that he had an inner strength, and that the Crystal Bell would help him draw it out. So far, Landon had witnessed that the Crystal Bell allowed him to create a deep link with the Poke’mon he was close to. Maybe, with a little bit of luck, he could tap even deeper into the powers of his Crystal Bell and stop the Poke’mon. Landon closed his eyes and concentrated hard on the electric Poke’mon chasing him. He visualized a glowing blue light deep within himself. A drop of water fell from the light and rippled in the ocean of his spirit. He focused on visualizing the Poke’mon in their pure forms; on returning them back to normal. “Landon, watch out!” “Huh!?” Landon’s eyes snapped open—to see the wall of a building rushing towards him. “Whoa!” he slid to a halt with his nose just inches from the bricks. A drop of sweat dripped from his forehead slowly. “Mudkip,” Toya let out a sigh of relief. “What were you doing, Himura?” Zeru folded his arms. “Sorry; I dozed off a little bit.” “Don’t sleep with your eyes open, Himura! Now c’mon!” He grabbed Landon by the arm and started into the dark alleyway. May followed and they hid in the shadows. There were more exploding sounds as the Voltorb and Electrode continued to self-destruct. The ground rumbled form each explosion shot off. “Hopefully, they won’t find us in here. ‘Learned this trick from a friend of mine.” Zeru flashed a thumbs-up. “What friend was that?” Landon blinked. Zeru and May just stared at him, sweating anime style.

Meanwhile, two figures sat atop one of the lampposts, gazing down at the city. They had been watching the kids get chased by the confused Poke’mon in amusement. Tsubimi looked to the distance and watched the generator spark and steam a little. “So, the reason they’re down there is to stop that turbine-thingy from blowing up?” Tsubimi asked with a slight air of boredom. “It seems that way. But it looks like something’s wrong with the Poke’mon.” Yoshimari told his sister, “It’s almost as if they’re trying to stop them from getting to it.” “But why? I’m pretty sure the Poke’mon don’t want to get blown up.” Tsubimi stated. “Yes, but maybe there’s more to it than that. Maybe there’s trying to stop the kids from getting to.” The two folded their arms and closed their eyes in thought. The wind beside Tsubimi spread as a Magnamite lowered beside her. “Magnaa?” It nudged her. Tsubimi didn’t move, but rather re-focused on her thinking again. “Magnamite?” It tapped her again and she continued to ignore her. “Magnaaaamiiite!” BUMP! “Wha!” Tsubimi almost lost her balance from being tackled in the back. “…?” Yoshimari sweated anime style as he watched his sister turn towards Magnamite. “You piece of junk!” BANG! She thrust her fist into the Poke’mon and sent it flying. With an arrogant nod, she closed her eyes and grinned. “That’ll teach that Cyclopes-paper weight to mess with—” Suddenly, a couple of Magnamite floated down to Team Darkhorn, their eyes glowing an agitated red. From above, more drifted to them and sported the same look. They encircled the two teenagers, their magnetic poles sparking dangerously. Yoshimari and Tsubimi backed into each other in fear. “I don’t think they appreciated what you did, Tsubimi.” Yoshimari shivered. “I’m starting to think the same thing.” Tsubimi gulped. “Magnaaa!” SPWEE! The Magnamite launched an array of lightning bolts fiercely; Yoshimari and Tsubimi shivered wildly from the shock. “Wha-ah-haaa!” There was a small explosion and the two soared off the lamppost, landing in the street. Their bodies were covered in soot from the attack. “Feh!” They spat out a puff of black smoke. “Next time, don’t be so violent, Tsubimi.” Yoshimari coughed and his sister nodded. “Voltorb!” From out of nowhere, a Voltorb rolled in front of the two, glaring at them. “This just isn’t—” “—our day.” “Voooltoorb!” SQWAA-BOOOM! Voltorb’s body lit up and exploded, sending Team Darkhorn flying into the air. “No fair! It’s too early in the episode for us to be sent away!!” Tsubimi exclaimed. Yoshimari held up his finger and smiled, “Maybe we should just move on to the commercial.”
