Mount Chimney was blanketed with a thick lay ķer of ash and soot, more so than usual, due to a recent eruption. Small flames mingled with the polluted air. Maxie, the rakish leader of Team Magma, stood at the summit of the great mountain, watching the destruction he and his army had caused.

"I could control all the world..." He thought. "I just need something more than Pokemon. I need power."

He had accomplished a lot in his life. He just didn't know his own strength. In the course of two years, he and Team Aqua, bitter enemies united by a love of power and destruction, had caused a horrific and brutal war which had reduced the whole Hoenn region to a gaping crater. He had used the powerful Blue and Red Orbs to control the minds of wild Pokemon.

And still, he felt there was something missing.

Many miles east of Mount Chimney, the leader of Team Aqua looked out at war torn Hoenn from his hideout. He could see dead bodies strewn across paths - killed by the bombs that had fallen from the jet - black sky hours earlier.

"We have succeeded. There are no survivors. Hoenn is ours." He said to himself. "And yet... And yet... There is something we need to destroy in order to rebuild Hoenn for the future." He remembered a day when he encountered three Pokemon trainers, years before the war started, before Aqua and Magma had united. But they were not the ones they needed to destroy. They had probably been destroyed already. Memories floated through Archie's mind. A hot air balloon, a bipedal Meowth with the gift of speech.

"To protect the world from devastation..."

"To unite all peoples within our nation..."

Team Rocket. They needed to destroy Team Rocket.

Archie flew the plane with grace and ease, his destination: Viridian City, Kanto. This was where Team Rocket's leader, Giovanni, held residence. He also ran the Gym there. As he battled the fierce weather, he had only one thought on his mind: "When Giovanni dies, Team Rocket dies with him."

"Perfect."

He launched a rocket (how ironic) onto the Viridian Gym, knowing that Giovanni and his cronies were in there.

"Power. I have the gift of power."

Jessie, James and Meowth were travelling through Kanto, and stopped off at a Pokemon Centre. They had been walking for hours, trying to track down a rare Pokemon, and they needed to rest.

"We should really call the Boss." Jessie said. She dialled the number, and to her surprise, there was just a strange, growling voice on the other end.

"If you are trying to contact Giovanni, then you have come to the right place..." The voice said.

"Wh - who ARE you?"

"I am Archie, of Team Aqua. Giovanni is dead."

"WHAT?"

"I& d;#146;m sorry." He said sarcastically. "The line's breaking up. Bye bye!"

"He's... Dead. They killed our Boss." Jessie whispered. She stroked Meowth's fur. "Don't worry Meowth. Everything's going to be fine. We'll say our last goodbyes at the funeral."

Jessie heard a sound emenating from underneath James' mop of purple hair, that made the impact of Giovanni's death even more powerful.

James was crying.
