In the gloomy darkness of the cave, the stillness was shattered. A pinky-white shape sped forward, jumping from rock to rock, occasionally looking back. After a while, the creature stopped, pausing for breath. It looked around. Nothing and nobody was coming, the only movement was water dripping from stalactites on the ceiling. The creature flicked its tail like an irritated cat; thinking. Where were they? What were they? And most importantly, what did they want? The creature blinked its clear, bright blue eyes, letting them adjust. Just as it was beginning to relax, a low, emotionless voice floated through the cave. “I found you…”

The creature tensed, scanned the cave anxiously.

“Mew…I found you.” Suddenly the floor began to shake, making loud rumbling noises. It rose, fell, and divided into two clumps of dirt and rock. A hole opened up in the floor, sending rubble flying in all directions. Out of the hole shot a huge rock-like snake. The creature’s eyes widened; it had to be at least twice the normal size! The rock-snake roared, and advanced toward the creature, sweeping its tail across the ground, picking up rocks and dirt that steadily grew to engulf the creature and crush its bones. The creature’s eyes flashed with something that could have been anger, or fear, or possibly even sadness, and it disappeared. The rock-snake paused, confused. Then it shook its head thoroughly; this was no time to be passive! Its orders had been simple: destroy Mew. How was that hard? It threw back its head and roared, smashing its tail against the walls. A few boulders collapsed, and the walls began to shake. The rock-snake gave a satisfied grunt: its job could be considered done. It smashed a hole through the wall and left. The cave proceeded to completely cave in, with a force that would bury any being alive.

As a grey dawn broke over the hills, a boulder shifted. With an effort, the creature poked its head out, looking dazed. Anything would have been killed – anything but Mew.
