Chapter 2-Battle When morning came, Alison packed up her tent and made her way to Viridian City. She needed to start collecting badges soon, or she would not be able to compete in the Pokémon League at the Indigo Plateau. "Hey!" Alison looked behind her to see a girl about her own age running up the road. "Hey" she said again, "are you a Pokémon Trainer?" "Yeah" answered Alison. She thought she knew where this was leading. She reached down to her belt. "Wanna battle?" the girl said producing a Lure Ball from her pocket. "Sure" Alison replied. "Alright then. Gyarados, GO!" the trainer cried as she threw the Lure Ball. Alison was a bit taken aback by the huge dragon type Pokémon. The Gyarados slithered into the lake next to the road and assumed the battle position. "Chikorita. I choose you!" Alison shouted, throwing the Pokéball in front of her. The grass Pokémon emerged in a flash of bright, white light. "Gyarados. Flail!" the girl instructed. Hearing the command the huge water Pokémon thrashed about in the lake and struck out with it's enormous tail. It hit Chikorita, sending the small creature flying backwards. Chikorita got up slowly but at once fell back down. "Chikorita, return!" Alison said. She thought for a minute then took a second Pokéball from her belt. She pressed the small button on the front. The ball enlarged in her hand. "Sandshrew, GO!" She threw the ball down. The rodent-like Pokémon stood up. This was his first trainer battle. It looked at Alison, waiting for a command. "Sand-attack!" Alison ordered. Sandshrew immediately swept at the ground with his strong tail. He sent a pile of dry sand flying towards Gyarados. Gyarados snarled as the sand hit him in the face. "We're not going to stand for this!" the other trainer said to Gyarados "Use your Waterfall attack!" the huge Pokémon moved quickly through the lake, causing a torrent of water to sweep over Sandshrew. The small Pokémon emerged from the waterfall dazed. "Return, Sandshrew!" Alison said. I'm never going to beat a Gyarados with my Raticate, or my Phanpy, thought Alison. Still. It's worth a try. "GO, Phanpy" Alison cried hurling another Pokéball towards the lake. The small, blue, elephant-like creature trumpeted as it came out of the ball. "Phanpy, Tackle Gyarados!" Phanpy obeyed the command; it ran full pelt at Gyarados. Gyarados dodged and Phanpy fell with a huge splash into the deep water. "Phanpy, return!" Alison ordered as a beam of red light issued from the Pokéball. Having retrieved her Pokémon from the lake, Alison took the last ball from her belt. "Raticate, I choose YOU!" Alison cried. The last of her Pokémon appeared. "Raticate, huh?" Gyarados's trainer said. "Easy. Gyarados use flail!" "Raticate, Agility. Try to confuse Gyarados!" Raticate just stood there, obviously not paying attention. "Raticate, come on. Agility!" Alison ordered more sternly. Raticate turned and headed back to it's Pokéball. The rodent-like Pokémon scratched at the ball with it's claws. The ball opened and Raticate was warped inside. "Raticate!" Alison said angrily. Then she calmed down. "Looks like you win" she said flatly, "Well done, you've got your Gyarados trained well". "Thanks," said the girl "I'm Abby, I train dragon Pokémon more than any other type." She shook hands with Alison and then added "You really need to get to that gym in Viridian. Be careful though, the leader is really tough. I'd carry on to Pewter and come back later if I were you." She then turned and headed back down the road the way she had come. Alison looked at the Pokéball on the ground. It contained Raticate. She thought of what Jason had told her. "You need some serious training" she said to the ball. It suddenly burst open. Raticate jumped out, knocking Alison over. "Hey, Raticate come back. RETURN!" Alison ordered pointing the Pokéball at Raticate. He was already too far down the road to call back. Alison gave chase. "RATICATE!" she yelled. ***
