AN: Welcome to my second Pokémon fan fiction. This is one of two stories that play before the events in Fight For Freedom. This one follows Kane, the evil villain of FFF, during the years preceding the takeover. It will cover the time between him joining Team Rocket and the start of FFF. The other story, which hasn’t been started yet, will follow Chris and his friends during the same time span. Since I feel like I’ve improved somewhat since the rocky start of FFF I demand of myself to make this one better. So, on we go with the hopefully-not-so-rocky-start of Before the Fight, Kane’s Side.

Chapter One: Introductions
********
It was a beautiful day as the sun shone brightly through the leaves with not a cloud in the sky and a nice temperature to go with it. As the Rattata and Nidoran frolicked happily in the undergrowth, the Pidgey chirped up in the trees and everything went just fine. How disgusting. Kane looked at the scene before him with murderous eyes, causing the Pokémon to scatter abruptly. He snorted as he turned back to his partner in crime, a relatively tall and muscular figure clad in the same grey uniform as he was, with grey pants, a black long sleeved shirt underneath a grey vest with big red ‘R’s on both sides of the front.
“I wonder what happened to get you so cranky.” Jack more or less asked while raising an eyebrow. “I think we’ve been doing a good job, yet you look like everything is going wrong.”
“Humph, we may be doing a good job, but that’s because our job is deadly simple. There’s no challenge in stealing the starters from novice trainers. What did we do to deserve this low assignment?” Was Kane’s reply as he crossed his arms and frowned at the small cages stacked together a small distance away. Some were empty, but most were occupied by starters such as Bulbasaur, Squirtle or Charmander for example. “We’d better get some decent assignments soon. We’re the most successful team and yet we get the easy jobs.”
Kane had always been quite full of himself, though he had every reason to be. When still at school he had top grades, but nobody picked on him for it. They were scared, for Kane had power. Not strength, for he was of average build, but the power of manipulation. If he wanted to he could set the two biggest bullies up against each other, which usually resulted in them being too occupied to even notice him. He used his brain to get what he wanted. Jack on the other hand had always relied on brawn instead of brains. He was well built and used this to his fullest advantage. Unlike popular beliefs he wasn’t just a dumb brute, he used his brains just as much as anybody else. He just excelled at brawn.
Jack was about to reply but a loud sound from the path they were watching cut him off. One of their traps had been sprung. “Oh well, time to get to work.” He said instead.

Once they arrived at the path that swirled through the landscape they saw a perfectly round hole in the ground. Someone had actually fallen for it. Cussing could be heard from down below as Jack slowly poked his head over the edge.
“Ah, what do we have here?” He smirked as he saw the kid jump in surprise. “Looks like another rookie; you can have him Jack I’m fed up with them.” Kane grumbled as he walked away from the hole. It was only time before the standard response…
“Who are you?!” and there it was. Stupid rookies. Kane always thought the big red R would be a dead giveaway, yet it appeared Team Rocket wasn’t nearly as infamous as it pretended to be. Under load protest from the boy, Jack lifted the kid out with ease and took his only Ball without giving the kid a chance to even release the occupant. Kane would’ve smirked at the bluntness of Jack’s actions, but it was the nth time he’d seen it and it no longer amused him. Jack tried to shoo the kid off first, but the boy was persistent. So he released his Growlithe and had it Roar. As Kane watched the kid run away as fast as his legs could go, Jack walked over to one of the empty cages and released the Pokémon into it. It turned out to be a Rattata.
“What?! We go through all that trouble of digging a pit and this is it?!” Jack scoffed as he kicked the cage, sending it flying into a tree. The cage broke and the Rattata took its chance. “Get back here you little rat! I’m not done yet!”
“Never mind Jack, it’s not worth the trouble. Let it run, we could probably catch a stronger one anyway.” Kane calmed his partner. The robbery had been good, but the loot was below average. It didn’t surprise Kane that Jack was angry. He smirked as he heard several kids chatting loudly in the distance. “Take it out on them if you have to.”
After quickly covering up the hole they hid in a bush nearby, spying on the kids. There were two boys of similar age and build. They appeared so similar they could be twins, or at least brothers. The third was a girl, also the same age as the boys. They looked to be somewhere around fourteen years old. As they came closer their sentences became understandable.

“I’m telling you, we need to get to that city soon or else we’ll have to sleep out here.” One of the boys said. The other boy answered. “What’s wrong with that John? Didn’t I tell you we’d be sleeping outside a lot?”
“Well, yes, you said we’d be sleeping outside a lot so I had to pack the tent. And normally I wouldn’t have a problem with it, except I forgot the tent…” The boy called ‘John’ by the other said, while his head hung down.
“What, You forgot the tent?!” The girl laughed at this while rubbing in the fact that she did bring her tent and didn’t plan on sharing it. The other boy looked like he was about to start yelling at ‘John’, but suddenly stopped several steps from the hole.
“Guys look, a round stain on the road.” The others stopped now too and checked out the darker patch of soil.
“It looks like fresh soil, like someone just dug here.” The girl stated. Kane grunted. He should’ve known that hole wasn’t going to work twice. “Jack, let’s just move in. We’ll steal their Pokémon the old fashioned way.” “Right.”

“Guys watch it, it’s Team Rocket!” John shouted as Kane and Jack came out of hiding. The three teens moved back slightly before clutching their Pokéballs. “What do you want?”
“Oh, and here I thought you were cleverer than the other trainers that came past here. Even though you actually recognized us, you tell me you don’t know what we want?” Kane said, faking a hurt voice. “It’s quite simple really; we just want your Pokémon. Give them and you’re free to move on. Hold on to them and you’ll have to battle us.”
“We won’t just give them away to any random grunt!” John exclaimed. Jack scoffed and replied. “Fine, I’m Jack and he’s Kane. Now we’re no longer random, hand them over.”
“Hey, I didn’t mean it like that! You’re not getting them anyway! Go Abra!” John released his Pokémon. As the Abra materialized Jack and Kane were having trouble holding their laughter. “What’s so funny?!”
“You are aware that Abra can only Teleport, aren’t you? It’s pretty much useless in battle.” John smirked at Kane’s comment. “This is a special Abra. I’ll show you, when you finally get your Pokémon out.”
“Fine,” Kane said. “I’ll take this one Jack, he’s way too confident. I don’t like cocky trainers. Come on out Diglett, you have a new target.” This time the kids laughed, and they didn’t try to hold it either. “Hahaha, that’s almost as bad as John’s Abra!” “What?! Shut it Chris!”
“Enough laughing, more fighting! Diglett, Dig!” As quickly as Kane ordered the attack his Diglett disappeared underground. John didn’t even order anything, which didn’t surprise Kane too much, as Abra could only Teleport anyway. John waited for signs that Diglett might be coming up. He and Chris had been watching battles on TV for weeks if not months to prepare for their journey, he’d recognize the signs… hopefully.

AN: A short first chapter, just to set the tone. I hope you liked it. I also hope having another story will give me more inspiration for my others. I have been a bit inactive lately, so I have something to make up to you. I’ll see if I can get part 9 of FFF up some time soon (very soon). Of course, the other side of this story (the one about Chris) will be showing up too. I don’t know exactly when, but I do plan on it. As for now, I’m signing off, see ya!
